I'm particularly impressed with just how damn good they were. They appear to be plugged in and things look live to me and Mondays has a fine vocal, Geldof's shaky vocal style is kept in check and he adds some nice flair on it. Nice!
I woke from a coma in the Richmond Hospital in Dublin about 1/2 hour before the Rats were onstage on top of the pops, funny sight, all us cripples legging it to the TV room to catch the rats take over the UK pop sceene : )
Compare this era, when bands knew how to wrire and play, to today's woeful shite. Thank Christ I was born in the 60s so I grew up in a decade of amazing music.
Thanks! This takes me back to watching this in my parents living room in 1980. I haven't seen this clip since then! What a great show: they had Split Enz, The Jam, The Clash, The Boomtown Rats...
@DevilsReject5768 That's nonsense. I live in a pretty average town of 100K, and the only time someone gets shot is when they try to rob a drug dealer. Normal people ("sheep" in hippy parlance) live very placid lives. Any home invasions we have (f.ex.) are exclusively criminals robbing one another. That fascination the UK has with American violence is as valid as ours with British dental work or lack thereof. It's myth, regardless of what moveon.org might suggest.
@mstheroff Actually there are about 50 murders per day in the us compared to about 3 per day in the UK and 1 per day in Canada. If it is a myth then why do American's demand to have a gun in their home to protect themselves?
I was on a train back in the 70's when this song was released and there was this drunk boofhead bragging that he was their biggest fan...even though he called them the Down Town Rats....never forgot that.
@urbestshot they were a fantastic live band. Not really punk, despite the era, more like David Bowie meets Thin Lizzy with a dose of satire. America lost out - they remained college band level popular here.
An excellent video, but like many live productions used during the 80s, marred by awful special effects the editor lacqured on top... (talking about the mirror effect seen in this video)
Also take note of the comet tail effects on the lighting. Definantly 80s!
I never realized until now how much Bob Geldof looks like Jerry Seinfeld.
I am also kind of suprised that this is the kind of music he sings. The only thing I have seen him in until this is in The Wall. I was expecting something different.
HAHA he kind of does. If you listen to The Fine Art of Surfacing you will get an idea of what the Boomtown Rats were about. Their music was amazing - most of the world only knows Tell Me Why I Don't Like Mondays, and they don't realize the horror of what the song is about, or the scope of the band who made it.
Thank you for posting this, I remember watching this very performance with my dad when I was 8. He's since passed away but I will always love this song. I even remembered that Bob Geldoff was wearing a crazy striped shirt. LOL THANKS for the very wonderful memory!!!
I girl in 1979 who lived across the street from her high school, woke up one Monday morning, and with the gun her father bought for her for Christmas, shot up her entire school! She killed eight people, when asked by police why she did it, she replyed, I was, "I was bored, I hate Mondays" ...her name was Brenda Spencer...just Google the story...it's F#@$%d up!
the gun was actually awarded her for her 16th birthday from her abusive father, she killed 2 adults and injured 8 children in the elementary school opposite her house. and she actually replied with "i don't like mondays" as her statement and reason for the shooting. She showed no remorse.
This is really great, thanks for putting it up, Sweetfan78.
But hey Adeykins, I grew up in the 70's in the US (NJ) and Mondays was a pretty big hit here. You still hear it played on radio from time to time, usually on a Monday by the 6:00 morning DJ.
