I love my city. Detroit is, has always been, and will always be, one the most historic, important, underrated, and unappreciated cities in the US. I have seen other cities, I have attended college in DC, visited LA, NY, Cleveland, etc. NONE compare to my city in their history or their drive and support of the country and the resilience of the inhabitants does not compare either. (no offense to any other viewers). But if you do not believe me, come here. You'll find respect you did not expect.
Los angeles transplant Detroit born and raise even tho these videos are fucked up they make me homesick but when i get home i get sick Detroit will come back.
The Michigan Central Station was built in 1913 and yet never was actually completed.
That building should have been turned into a Museum, yet it sat vacant for decades and about to meet the wrecking ball. The 1973 and 1979 energy crisis are a bigger factor then the riots too. Motown leaving didn't help and the Renaissance Center further distanced the city becoming like a city within a city. meanwhile the people mover goes round and round with no people. A shame is what it is.
I'll pipe in, as more than a dozen pictures of mine were used without permission for this video. Let go of the riot as the cause of Detroit's problems, it's a lot of hype. The problems started before that with the building of I-75 destroying Paradise Valley in 1957 (that's the year Detroit's population started declining). There were riots in the 40's without the same population decrease. Detroit is the most resilient city in this country, we'll be back.
I always had this vision that Detroit was like Newark, New Jersey and this was before I went there in 1996. Then I had a residency at Motor Lounge and did 50 shows between 1996-2001. There really is nothing to compare Detroit with but Newark, Trenton & Camden do look quite similar. It is truly the raw essence of a city that once was and now is a shell of its former self.
I'd rather have The D stay looking like it does in this video rather than raize all the derelict buildings and turn those empty plots into the proposed 'urban garden'.
Detroit is a classic example of how a great American city was destroyed when hateful wacko liberals took over and drove all the successful businesses out to the burbs.
that was ignorant and slow. the steam powered factorys became obsolete due top electricity. they closed down and they left all the black ppl who migraed to the city to die in poverty. crack sells, youth violence and homelessness.

Detroit is dead, just bulldoze it back to to it's pre-industrial revolution form. Maybe this is karma catching up. Detroit's "Arsenal of Democracy" did build over 40% of the munitions and weaponry used by the allies during WW2. Regardless of who won, millions of innocent civilians died from the Motor City's bombs, bombers, tanks, mines, guns, and bullets around the world.
What a shame, Detroit should be one of the shining star cities of the united states with all of its history, & hard working people. I remember it when I was young. Marveled at its busy streets and shopping, nice folks too.
How does this happen, and why can`t it be fixed? maybe the big three (and a new governor) will get their act together and the city will be great again with good jobs and a future for its people. there must be a way!
Maaaaan....I just heard this joint on 107.3FM in The Glass(Toledo)...I almost broke my neck noddin to the beat! When I travel throughout the country I strive to tell people how it is up here in the D and the T...This is the realest shit I heard ALL YEAR! Finally, a MC dun brought REALITY....THE STREET NEWS....back to the forefront. PEACE!
Born & raised in D town! Left in 96. It saddens me to se what Detroit has been reduced to! Most of the blame is because of the collapse of the automotive industry! The fat cat's of the Big 3 let their greed get in the way, and forgot about the people & the city that worked hard to get them there!
to brownrider, nothin against you or your opinion, but dude ur from minnesota, this michigan, that might be what they do in minnesota, but here in wayne county IS ALL LOWER CLASS PEOPLE every city here has a part considered the ghetto, including white people,i kno ive lived in a lot of diff. place around here its mostly the same
WOW! there right, there isnt one nation wide grocery store like meijers, k-mart, walmart in detroit, i juss renember from being in detroit big markets and stuff with food, the place doesnt even have a name its just to walkin in and take or steel food
& its not about black/white thing bra its a rich/poor thing rich bussiness people want detroit & want to bring back industry/work & spend $ in detroit they just dont want to do it in a hood A.K.A. murder fuck n city!!! they want they residents of detroit to get so fed up with liveing condictions/lack there of they will move away, once that happens detroit will start to rebuild for the upper class shoppers etc. untill the hood id gone yall wont even have a grocery store in the city limits! ya dig?
you know i have much love for Detroit, i've never been there probably never will, but coming from Baltimore i have to appreciate the hood, the slum, the ghetto or what ever people want to call it because no where else can you find brighter souls will amazing character and passion.
I miss my home town. For all it's problems, it's people have PRIDE, which is sorely lacking in many parts of the US. Detroit will rise from the ashes...only to burn again.
man have hope but Detroit is fucked! rich/white people dont wont to rebuild or invest $in a city they are afraid of... im from minnesota & ive never herd of any of them grocery stores EVER! rich people wont the poor to leave they are forceing people out with the liveing condictions or lack there of! once the poor leave they can buy up the land cheap & rebuild & raise the price of property so that only middle/upper middle class familys can move back in! thats when the industry will return...
the producer flipped the Gil Scott Heron song dope. so far 3 dope hip hop tracks came from that song they are Common's The People Black Star's Brown Skin Lady and now this 1 dope(probably alot more just havent heard them yet peace)
riots they forgot about us this 07 national guard dont wont it with us" beleave what u wont but Detroit is fucked rich & white people dont wont to invest in a city they dont feel safe in! thats why the companys left they wont the poor/minoritys to leave to
then they will bring back the industrys its like new orlens rich wont the poor out then they can buy property cheap build it up& raise the prices ageain that way the poor are all else wear! wake up
man detroit is fucked man when they say we have our own war going on we dont have to go iraq thats the fucking honest truth that city
lookes like its been bombed up... have faith
&hope shit is going to turn around but be real yall that city has been on the decline since b4 the 1980s white & rich people dont wont to build up a city they are scared to go into man... its like new orlens the rich wont the poor to leave the city so the rich can redevelup the city & make $ off of the peoples strugle
this was a really good video and i love this song! i wish it got more airplay than the other detroit rappers, this song has something to say. the pics were so accurate on what this city is. suprised there were no train station pics.
this whole city is the hood...literally, with very few exceptions. what they do add, they just build around what ruins are just left to decay.
there's so much work to be done, but i cannot begin to express how much i love and will always love this city though.
Damn I Though Growing In Baltimore was bad this video makes me glad that i live in B'more I Hope People In Detroit Raise They City up So It Can Be Great Again Beforte Crack & Gangsta Disciples Came Upon Them 4real I'll Pray For Y'all
This is why I still appreciate REAL hip hop; this brother should rise soon enough, as this reminds me of a Buckshot-type gig, which is much respect. Keep doing your thing! Peace!
it's ill how different cities have their own thing! like sodas-faygo is big in the D,Chicago be on RC's and nehi's. St. Louis got orange Whistles and Vess's sodas. New Orleans got Big Shot sodas. much respect to Marquise Porter for puttin' it down for his city,i respect that. I'm from Chicago and been to Gary and East St. Louis and all of them have rough areas so i feel what you sayin'. no matter how rough or bad a city look or is,home is home-rep it to the fullest and love it for what it is!
good music, rise up detroit, rise (i live in detroit.) So i have hope in Detroit...also, WE DON'T HAVE ANY GROCERY STORES O.o?? I just thought we didn't have any malls thts all..
read my comment above this gose together this comment was kinda for you but they wernt leting people leave comments on this video for 2wks plus... they are doing Detroit like they did/are doing new orlens
make condictions so bad the local residents have/want to leave then they can rebuild the city & bring industry/work back to the area
but the property prices will be so high the locals residents wont be able to aford the homes available!!! thats how the rich get what they wont sorry to say!?
It makes me sad what has happened to Detroit. It is horrible to see a city in that condition in The United States. The people who run that city should be jailed. Nobody should have to live like that.
just heard this on FM 98 WJLB so I had to look it up. I am all about my local artist if they stay "313" and not the south or west coast. Like J-Dilla, SV, 5 elements and Phat kat. Thanks for the upload.
Detroit was like a midwestern NYC, and if you drive around the areas inside the Grand Boulevard loop, you can tell that there was once a vibrant city here.
NY wasn't this bad during the worse of times. Even Newark NJ (which I criticized earlier & got attacked) isn't this bad structurally. What is keeping this city alive is NYC. Detroit doesn't have a NY like city supporting it, so it is left to fend for itself. Being that the majority of people who live in Detroit are black, corporations are hesitant to invest in this city. The main problem with this city is it sole reliance on the auto industry. And when that fails, the city fails too.
you're right. we relied on ONE thing where chicago and NYC spread out. we relied on cars, and look what happened?! look at flint. now for philly, if i were to move away from detroit (which would be hard to do), i'd move there.
it's just sad how were on the worst lists. most dangerous, most abandoned, high unemployment, overweight, high stds, high hiv, etc, etc.
Detroits gone. Since the 1950's the population has gone down 51%. All the abondoned buildings, and we still have people in large apartment blocks. What the fuck.
Yeah man, i'm not from the 313 ut this tune is phat, the kid got a cd out somethin' ? Keep it up cause his tunes are phat. Much love & respect for the 313 (from a white guy).
I wish detroit would be like it was back in the 50s... lets all get past racial problems.. and work together as a nation to bring prosperity and life back into the city.
agreed! compared to other places i've been, being in detroit and surrounding areas...it's really racist. i've had my life threatened plenty of times for being white, i know blacks are still treated unfair, the mexicans in southwest, and the arabics on the dearborn/detroit border. we all get it, and we're all against each other. it's a shame.
in order to live in Detroit you gotta have that "Detroit state of mind". you become desensitized to all the blight and crime and you just don't give a fuck. You can't be soft and live there, you won't make it. If you lived there and moved away you will always think to yourself "why in the hell did I live there"?
Right, I hate the thought of leaving here, because it's all I've ever known, but when I go visit other places like ATL, New York, etc. then com back, i see it better and feel like WTF, but being here, you get used to all that shyt. Even this video, I know all the areas, but watching it from behind a camera it's like "damn" this is where I live.
that city is depressing.when i went there the ffirst time i couldnt jump back on i-94 fast enough.i knew it was fucked up but i didnt realize how fucked up it was until i went there.damn near no signs of life like a str8 up ghosttown.what really tripped me out was when i saw abandon buildings downtown i was like this cant be in america.i think blacks in that city and from around the u.s. should try to work together and maybe bring that city back and make it into another atlanta.
DAMN GOOD VIDEO AND DAMN GOOD SONG. other city's are dope, but they're not Detroit. fuck you i'll die here happily. it'll rain and be 40 degrees at my funeral too. haha. thats how we roll. thats why we'll kick your ass for looking at us wrong. and we built your car. bitch.
The scenes in this video are the result of LBJs failed Great Society. The African American family has been crucified by liberal misguided policies and conservative indifference. I don't care much for Hip Hop but I like this song. Thanks
if you care about how fucked up it is it will kill your spirit so you cant give a fuck you just gotta love it for all the grimiest beautiful shit it is 1 love
I love my city Detroit but I don't blame people for wanting to leave. This is not the same city 20 years ago. People here act like they don't care and its sad.
I recently moved to philly area from detroit area for work. North philly is real damn scary! I miss D-town. Love all the cooky artsy urban pioneers and the keepin it real brothers back home!
Yea thats true. We used to have Farmer Jack, then they packed up and dipped. Now you gotta go to like Warren or like Ferndale to go to a big Market. Other than that, you just gonna have to settle for Spartan foods. lol. meeeeemories
Yea thats true. We used to have Farmer Jack, then they packed up and dipped. Now you got to go to like Warren or like Ferndale to go to a big Market. Other than that, you just gonna have to settle for Spartan foods or corner store groceries. lol. meeeeemories
This video is tight. I put it on my web site. Love that song to. I have family in the D, most of them have move out of MI just to find work. I live in Flint its not as bad as the D, yet. But it will be soon if we dont get someone who cares in office to run the state and its citys, And quit sending jobs out of the US. Theres citys all over that look like this, And know one cares. Like Detroit,MI. Flint,MI. Saginaw,MI. New Orleans,LA. St. Luis,MO. Gary,IN. Allover NY. Others And alot more to come
What the hell happened? This country should be ashamed to allow this to happen and act as if knowing is wrong. Now we got New Orleans to add on the list of dilapidated states? Mmmmm
the mayor of new Orleans Ray Nagin is a democrat so was Marc Morial the mayor before. Republican's aren't at fault with New Orleans. You just hate republicans and that's ok. It's your right. And you correct about free trade killing Michigan and what's Granholm and Kirkpatrick going to do about nothing because they are useless.
This devistation is not due to Free Trade. This hell hole called Detroit was in this shape LONG before Free Trade. The deterioration started during the Coleman Young administration in the 70's. Coleman Young was another corrupt politician.
Detroit is becoming feral. It was written off in the 50's in favor of the burbs. Motown may be an apt description of how a city addicted to the automobile for transportation to the exclusion of other modes will end up. Sad...
I lived there for 30 years and it didn't start going down the drain until 1984 when crack hit the streets. Coleman Young tried to stop it but there were too many users and dealers. The Chambers brothers destroyed the eastside. During the 90's all the jobs left. Now in 2008 there are no jobs, more crime, and a mayor about to go to prison. Good luck
they been givin some guns back, but that scares me more, you gotta be able to defend yourself,, what if only the nastiest kept their guns and ran the whole thing,, anyways paranoid talk like that probably propagates the whole thing but theres respect n the d cause ppl know life aint a game. 1
It's depressing to see all those great old buildings in such a bad state of disrepair. And the people there, you need a new mayor, better leadership to bring your city back to its former glory.
man for some people its hard to look at this for as of it being there own city, to others in detroit, its beautiful, i know im from belleville near the D
Went down with friends from Toronto to watch a pistons game. I always knew Detroit was bad but man now that I see this I wonder how a once modern american city with the big 3 booming and some of the best post depression styiling became the way it has. This city is in such a state of despair I wouldn't know where to begin if there was some oppurtunity to help fix it in the many ways it's falling.
I love my city. Detroit is, has always been, and will always be, one the most historic, important, underrated, and unappreciated cities in the US.

Born & raised in D town! Left in 96. It saddens me to se what Detroit has been reduced to! Most of the blame is because of the collapse of the automotive industry! The fat cat's of the Big 3 let their greed get in the way, and forgot about the people & the city that worked hard to get them there!

man have hope but Detroit is fucked! rich/white people dont wont to rebuild or invest $in a city they are afraid of... im from minnesota & ive never herd of any of them grocery stores EVER! rich people wont the poor to leave they are forceing people out with the liveing condictions or lack there of! once the poor leave they can buy up the land cheap & rebuild & raise the price of property so that only middle/upper middle class familys can move back in! thats when the industry will return...

this was a really good video and i love this song! i wish it got more airplay than the other detroit rappers, this song has something to say. the pics were so accurate on what this city is. suprised there were no train station pics.
this whole city is the hood...literally, with very few exceptions. what they do add, they just build around what ruins are just left to decay.
there's so much work to be done, but i cannot begin to express how much i love and will always love this city though.

it's ill how different cities have their own thing! like sodas-faygo is big in the D,Chicago be on RC's and nehi's.

Detroit was like a midwestern NYC, and if you drive around the areas inside the Grand Boulevard loop, you can tell that there was once a vibrant city here.
vfreeck 3 years ago
Well, Philly still has much of its building stock, along with a vibrant downtown (unlike Detroit).
vfreeck 3 years ago
NY wasn't this bad during the worse of times. Even Newark NJ (which I criticized earlier & got attacked) isn't this bad structurally. What is keeping this city alive is NYC. Detroit doesn't have a NY like city supporting it, so it is left to fend for itself. Being that the majority of people who live in Detroit are black, corporations are hesitant to invest in this city. The main problem with this city is it sole reliance on the auto industry. And when that fails, the city fails too.
qolspony 3 years ago
you're right. we relied on ONE thing where chicago and NYC spread out. we relied on cars, and look what happened?! look at flint. now for philly, if i were to move away from detroit (which would be hard to do), i'd move there.
it's just sad how were on the worst lists. most dangerous, most abandoned, high unemployment, overweight, high stds, high hiv, etc, etc.

I wish detroit would be like it was back in the 50s... lets all get past racial problems.. and work together as a nation to bring prosperity and life back into the city.
bearsarebig 3 years ago 2
agreed! compared to other places i've been, being in detroit and surrounding areas...it's really racist. i've had my life threatened plenty of times for being white, i know blacks are still treated unfair, the mexicans in southwest, and the arabics on the dearborn/detroit border. we all get it, and we're all against each other. it's a shame.
thatsmyjammbox 3 years ago 3
in order to live in Detroit you gotta have that "Detroit state of mind". you become desensitized to all the blight and crime and you just don't give a fuck. You can't be soft and live there, you won't make it. If you lived there and moved away you will always think to yourself "why in the hell did I live there"?
PhuckHue 3 years ago
Right, I hate the thought of leaving here, because it's all I've ever known, but when I go visit other places like ATL, New York, etc. then com back, i see it better and feel like WTF, but being here, you get used to all that shyt. Even this video, I know all the areas, but watching it from behind a camera it's like "damn" this is where I live.

Sad...
MarkD42656 3 years ago 2
I lived there for 30 years and it didn't start going down the drain until 1984 when crack hit the streets. Coleman Young tried to stop it but there were too many users and dealers. The Chambers brothers destroyed the eastside. During the 90's all the jobs left. Now in 2008 there are no jobs, more crime, and a mayor about to go to prison. Good luck
