  • barry davies = england's no.1 - motson = laughing stock

  • jimmy hill chuckling in the background at 1.01, love barry davies best commentator

  • revenge for 1973 :)

  • All the BBC commentators are rubbish now bring back Barry Davies and Motty

  • 3 goals that sum up Linekar perfectly.

  • back in the days when it easy easy to care about the national team

  • No second half? Guess much didn't happen in that....

Thanks for the upload, and bringing back the memories

  • I bloody love Barry Davies

  • Barry Davies' commentary - "and LINEKERRRR says thank you very much!"

What Jonathan Pearce would have said (really quickly) - "andhere'sLinekerhattrickthreenil"

    I know which I prefer...

  • We kicked off in our group crappily. Absolute pants vs the Portugeezers and then impotent vs Morocco - Ray Wilkins acted like a right ol' plonker - and then in typically English fashion when we had to win well, we put on a dazzling display!

  • "You can only stand and stare at English joy!"

  • This commentator was CLASS, did they honestly replace him with that tit jonathan pearce??? Hahahaha that's such a joke!!

  • 'He met it so sweetly', 'There is an element of delerium on the terraces'. Says it all really.

  • @1:36 will live with me forever. The pressure that eased when that went in at the time, was immense.

  • POLAND *1*

  • England were shite in this World Cup until injurys and suspensions forced Robson to bring in the Everton lads Trevor Steven and Peter Reid. With Gary Stevens already in the side with Gary Lineker who got a hat-trick. We at Everton should never have sold him.

  • fuck of poland

  • @kierenmorris

jesteś koniojebcą! in your stupid language - you're wanker!

  • fuck of poland

  • @kierenmorris fuck off england you dickheads, just cos u lost bitch

  • "England CANNOT afford to make crass errors like that"

    classic Barry Davies

  • POOOOLAND

  • Football now is not like it use to be,glad I was alive to enjoy football when it was a sport.

  • 0:17 backpass :O

  • England misses a player now who comes up big when necessary. Like Lineker does here.

  • lineker coming in on it now... MAGNIFICENT GOALLLLL...

so wish we could hear commentry about england like that again :(

    wats happened to us........

  • I still miss Barry Davies and John Motson they were the best commentators of all time!!! the commentators now are bland, bland and very bland!!!!. When i watch football now i put 5 live and listen to Alan Green easily the best commentator in football!!!!!!.

  • Now this was how to finish a group stage off! Decent team and brilliant commentary.

  • What talent in this England team. They'd win the WC easily with this lot now.

  • nice nice

  • England can win make or break games in the World Cup!

  • Came here looking for inspiration for the vital third game in the 2010 World Cup. Oh to be screaming "Goal ah ha ha ha" against Slovenia!! Just a shame we will have to be do without Barry Davies...

  • Best commentator ever. Wish he never left the BEEB- far better commentator than Motson.

  • Barry Davies, my favourite sports commentator.

Should also mention Brian Moore, another great commentator.

  • wow if we had linekar upfront now with rooney...LETHAL! hopefully then, heskey would finally be dropped...

  • the beeb got rid of the wrong man when they kept Motson and pensioned off Bazza

  • the voice in the back ground is bobby charlton who was with the BBC

  • I think ESPN Classic will be showing the full 90 mins of this game sometime in April, along with some other games from 82 and 86.

  • I may be wrong, but isn't Jimmy Hill the guy laughing in the background?

  • I always remembered the guy in the background laughing when Lineker scores the first goal. Loved every minute of this World Cup.....apart from the hand ball of course...

  • think this england team and 1990 was better than the present... with robson as boss they would cane present day prima donnas

  • Poland was weaker than in previous tournaments in 1974,1978 and 1982

  • Steve Hodge actually looked quite useful here.

  • was in the crowd at the universitario stadium in monterrey. probably the most joyous first half of football i've witnessed, especially as we had to win to remain in the tournament. Spoilt somewhat at half time when an england fan was attacked by other england fans in the toilets because of club rivalries. 3 nil up & still the neanderthals aren't happy. Unbelievable. Glad to say things have improved on that score

  • I still reckon Linekers second goal is among the finest England goals I have ever seen.

Among Platts V Belgium, Gazzas V the sweaties and Michael Owens hattrick against the Germans.

"Lineker far side, coming in on it now! YES!! Magnificent goal!"

  • oooooohhhhh...highlights package!

  • At 0:52 it reminds me of the pass Pele made for Carlos Alberto in WC70.

  • I am Pole. I looked this footbal match. Portugal win with England. Poland win with Portugal. I believed that Poland will conquer England. Poland this was the good team. England was great.

  • The red card for Ray "the crab" Wilkins and the injury for Captain Marvel actually worked out well for England because Bobby Robson was forced to pick a better balanced team for the Poland game.

  • go POLAND!!!

  • you think that we gonna win?

meybay when you gonna have killed yours players!:)

  • I remember we lost to Portugal(when they were minnows), 1-0. Carlos Manuel was the scorer(never forget that name, lol). I was 13 at the time, and it was the first World Cup I watched in it's entirety(I was too young to appreciate 1982, although I was aware of it).

But the sigh of relief, when Lineker's first goal went in - Priceless.

  • I was 11 at that time, we draw with Marocco , and beat Portugal and then match with England. After second goal I realize that something wrong was happening. After this game Lineker became our boogieman. hahaha

England had good team at that time, You didn't start well (had to beat Poland) and then you were just unlucky. I'm surprised I actually remember games that well. Good WC

  • Davies-"Never mind the heat & the alt.; it's raining goals!!" Lineker did a nice little bit of finishing in this game, eh? Butcher also put in a commanding performance in the #6 shirt, IMO. Was every England outfield player in Shilton's wall @ about 2:20? ;D

  • England have not beaten Portugal in any meaningful game since 1966.

  • Barry was always my fav commentator.

  • Mine too. Sadly under used by the bbc and sorely missed.

Buncol odzyl dopiero w Bayerze. Ogolnie kadre mielismy dobra - na pewno mielismy wspaniala linie pomocy - ogromne talenty i gwazdy-obrona do dupy

  • are you an israeli retard? fuck your mother bastard!

  • Motson just rambles shit. Barry Davies is easily the best commentator ever.

  • I aggree but the bbc had motson as no1

  • Should ave been Davies

  • agree with ya,

  • Comment removed

  • Barry Davis was so patriotic in his commentary it was brilliant. Maybe impartial but who cares he was the best soccer commentator BBC ever had. Colman was a twit, Motson was a prat and the latest are just god awful.

  • dont get me started on that bird

  • ah yes memories. Barry Davies was brilliant, always watched a match if he was commentating. Think I heard him doing Wimbledon this year.

  • Barry Davies was the best commentator England ever produced, he was simply brilliant.

I cannot believe MOTD replaced him with Johnathan Pearce, awful.

  • england suck

    come on scotland

  • Haha, yes of course they do....

  • Wow Gary looks different with that much hair lol.

  • Barry Davies pure class commentary, fucking Motson hate him boring git.

  • i agree

  • Great memories! thanx for posting, I was 14yrs old in 1986 and have some great memories of sitting up late to watch the England games! and believe me it still hurts to see England knocked out by that dodgy handball!, still must admit that Maradona was a true legend and won that world cup virtually on his own. Gary lineker was a legend 2 and was certainly a hero to anyone English...

  • Why was The Count from Sesame Street laughing aft each Eng goal ! Ah a a a a

  • it was Jimmy Hill quiet funny lol

  • why doesnt he commentate on football anymore, one of the best football commentators if u ask me

  • he retired was in about 2004 i think well from football commentary

  • we didnt have Gorgon Lato and Tomaszewski...

  • England, what a bunch of losers when push comes to shove in the world cup....

    perennial underachievers....

    66 was a fluke

  • And what have America ever done in "SOCK-errr"? Apart from host a world cup with a crap final.

  • @mts1977 Because you have such a successful track record with the world cup, good old 1966!

keep dwelling on that and hating Americans, it's healthy

  • @brdispatch76 I didn't mention 1966 and I didn't say I hated Americans. Taking the piss is not the same as hatred.

  • @mts1977 how about holding 'super' england last night lol

  • @mts1977 like you I used to think it was pronounced "America" but I was embarassed to realise while listening to an interview with Becksie-belles (who lives there now) that it actually ends in an "errrr" sound

  • @mts1977 You've got to admit that the US have gotten better at football and are taking it more seriously then they used to.

  • @EpicToast33 I should have kept my mouth shut. America should have beaten us in the World Cup. They were robbed against Slovenia and had chances to beat Ghana in the second round. An impressive team, I take it back

  • @mts1977 okay bud lets talk sports, not just "soccer" lets try the olympics care to share the results of those both summer and winter?

  • @pickeringtonnorth I suggest you see my comment of a month ago on this very video for my post world cup feelings on American football

  • @mts1977 thats my bad didnt see it and sorry for being a dick

  • Barry Davies tainted himself by doing hockey commentary.

  • Although no 'home' nations were at USA94, it was an excellent World Cup, but with a crap final. Same with Italia90.

Mexico86 had great group games/knockout rounds AND and great final.

So it was the last truly great World Cup.

  • Yes, the Republic of Ireland were in that world cup. and before you say "oh they are not in the UK", they are still considered a home nation.

  • Without Lineker England would have not won this game.

  • Considering that the game ended 3-0 and Linekar scored all the goals, I think your mathematical analysis is probably correct.

  • Barry Davies one of the best commentators of our day, wasn't this the game that the England supporters were doing the conga.

  • I remember watching this at Pontins in Jersey when I was a kid. Full of wasted blokes going mental. Although, not as mental as Barry Davies it would appear....

  • think this england squad had more chance of winning a world cup than the present bunch

  • Actually, I reckon the 1990 team was better. Paul Parker, Des Walker, Gazza, Beardsley, Butcher etc. still bloody lost though didn't we.

Check out ex-liverpool player Craig Johnstone getting upset in a recent interview. He reckons the reason for our constant failure is that English kids are lazy compared to German, Brazilian and Italian kids. You don't see many English kids outdoors kicking a ball about anymore.

  • id probably say it comes down to the fact that we havent got the mental strength for penalty shootouts. we have only lost 2 tournament knockout matches in normal play. and one of those was to a hand ball goal!

  • I love Lineker. True Area,s Predator

  • i was born 78 and this is greatest team we ever had in 86 , pride passion

  • best commentator ever.

  • Barry has certainly been one of the best since Wolstenholme and Pearcey apart is in another league to the present generation who prattle on and miss the action. Barry called it as it happened,His presence is still missed.

  • @gurneyer Johnathan Pearce in case anyone isnt aware, has a long reputation within the game for being a twat which has only recently become aware to us supporting public. Barry Davies and Brian Moore were always my top 2 commentators personally and they seemed to have friends and good relations with the players and clubs, unlike Pearce.

  • that second goal was fantastic.

  • Tomaszewski Forever !!!

  • No Tomaszewski back then. Only Mlynarczyk - a good keeper, tough he was simply owned by Lineker during that match. :/

  • This is when football was great. Partially filled remote stadia, sunburnt nutters on the beer. Great. great scenes.

  • Agreed! I loved the commentary where it was over the phone now. You won't get that these days now....

  • you guys are right this was the last great WC.

  • not cheering up really

  • USEFUL!....

  • I was at junior school in the UK, and our headmaster spoke about this game in morning assembly and the whole school said a prayer for the England team!! :)

  • i remember this well it was about 6 in the morning and i was allowed to get up and watch it :)

"whata lovely first time ball!" lineker!!

  • Where were you living that it was 6am while a match was played in Mexico?

  • You've gotta love Barry Davies

  • love jimmy hill cheering in the background !!
