We kicked off in our group crappily. Absolute pants vs the Portugeezers and then impotent vs Morocco - Ray Wilkins acted like a right ol' plonker - and then in typically English fashion when we had to win well, we put on a dazzling display!
England were shite in this World Cup until injurys and suspensions forced Robson to bring in the Everton lads Trevor Steven and Peter Reid. With Gary Stevens already in the side with Gary Lineker who got a hat-trick. We at Everton should never have sold him.
I still miss Barry Davies and John Motson they were the best commentators of all time!!! the commentators now are bland, bland and very bland!!!!. When i watch football now i put 5 live and listen to Alan Green easily the best commentator in football!!!!!!.
Came here looking for inspiration for the vital third game in the 2010 World Cup. Oh to be screaming "Goal ah ha ha ha" against Slovenia!! Just a shame we will have to be do without Barry Davies...
I always remembered the guy in the background laughing when Lineker scores the first goal. Loved every minute of this World Cup.....apart from the hand ball of course...
was in the crowd at the universitario stadium in monterrey. probably the most joyous first half of football i've witnessed, especially as we had to win to remain in the tournament. Spoilt somewhat at half time when an england fan was attacked by other england fans in the toilets because of club rivalries. 3 nil up & still the neanderthals aren't happy. Unbelievable. Glad to say things have improved on that score
I am Pole. I looked this footbal match. Portugal win with England. Poland win with Portugal. I believed that Poland will conquer England. Poland this was the good team. England was great.
The red card for Ray "the crab" Wilkins and the injury for Captain Marvel actually worked out well for England because Bobby Robson was forced to pick a better balanced team for the Poland game.
I remember we lost to Portugal(when they were minnows), 1-0. Carlos Manuel was the scorer(never forget that name, lol). I was 13 at the time, and it was the first World Cup I watched in it's entirety(I was too young to appreciate 1982, although I was aware of it).
But the sigh of relief, when Lineker's first goal went in - Priceless.
I was 11 at that time, we draw with Marocco , and beat Portugal and then match with England. After second goal I realize that something wrong was happening. After this game Lineker became our boogieman. hahaha
England had good team at that time, You didn't start well (had to beat Poland) and then you were just unlucky. I'm surprised I actually remember games that well. Good WC
Davies-"Never mind the heat & the alt.; it's raining goals!!" Lineker did a nice little bit of finishing in this game, eh? Butcher also put in a commanding performance in the #6 shirt, IMO. Was every England outfield player in Shilton's wall @ about 2:20? ;D

Great memories! thanx for posting, I was 14yrs old in 1986 and have some great memories of sitting up late to watch the England games! and believe me it still hurts to see England knocked out by that dodgy handball!, still must admit that Maradona was a true legend and won that world cup virtually on his own. Gary lineker was a legend 2 and was certainly a hero to anyone English...
@mts1977 like you I used to think it was pronounced "America" but I was embarassed to realise while listening to an interview with Becksie-belles (who lives there now) that it actually ends in an "errrr" sound
@EpicToast33 I should have kept my mouth shut. America should have beaten us in the World Cup. They were robbed against Slovenia and had chances to beat Ghana in the second round. An impressive team, I take it back
I remember watching this at Pontins in Jersey when I was a kid. Full of wasted blokes going mental. Although, not as mental as Barry Davies it would appear....
Actually, I reckon the 1990 team was better. Paul Parker, Des Walker, Gazza, Beardsley, Butcher etc. still bloody lost though didn't we.
Check out ex-liverpool player Craig Johnstone getting upset in a recent interview. He reckons the reason for our constant failure is that English kids are lazy compared to German, Brazilian and Italian kids. You don't see many English kids outdoors kicking a ball about anymore.
id probably say it comes down to the fact that we havent got the mental strength for penalty shootouts. we have only lost 2 tournament knockout matches in normal play. and one of those was to a hand ball goal!
Barry has certainly been one of the best since Wolstenholme and Pearcey apart is in another league to the present generation who prattle on and miss the action. Barry called it as it happened,His presence is still missed.

Although no 'home' nations were at USA94, it was an excellent World Cup, but with a crap final. Same with Italia90.
Mexico86 had great group games/knockout rounds AND and great final.
So it was the last truly great World Cup.

Yes, the Republic of Ireland were in that world cup. and before you say "oh they are not in the UK", they are still considered a home nation.
