  • @chuckc7210 They usually did a half hour of trio playing before they went into the full band stuff.

I wish people idolized THIS side of Buddy a little more. Check out how beautiful his hands are, listen to the way he comps, listen to his dynamics and where he chooses to put accents based on the spontaneity of what the others are playing.

  • Excellent! Interesting that Rich chose a trio format when he had all those horns available. I also like the up tempo choice. Not so sure about the electric bass though. Nice version of one of the classic songs but not better than the Miles/Evans version for me. Thanks.

  • wow great to see buddy playeith the brushes

  • WOW that was really something.sticks brushes it does not matter to the king of drummers.great playing too from the other two guys.top pianist this man.many thanks.

  • so nice..

  • @JoeJacari O_o you trollin'?

  • @JoeJacari You took all the time typing that response, only to show that you're an obvious troll? Sucks to be you.

  • Dave Carpenter is an excellent Electric Jazz Bassist!..i had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Carpenter when he played w/ the great Buddy Rich & his Big Band last appearance @ The Bottom Line NYC before Buddy past..great concert! ]0)

  • @tornmask Dave Carpenter most certainly was a great player. Allas he died june 24 2008 of a heart attack.

  • @MrBassnl : oh wow, i didn't knw that & i'm sorry to have been reported of his passing, but thx so much for the info...wish that great Bassists & Drummers with other great passionate Musicians would have lived longer to witness more of their gifted musical talent! ]0l

  • not only rich impresses, also the guy on the piano, great !

  • So I'm interesting in what you guys think? Rich or Roach?

  • very cool but lacks blues in my opinion...

  • Ithought Dave Carpenter sounded great w/ Buddy, so does Bill Cunliffe!!

  • Is this show available on DVD? If so, what's it called?

  • This Is absolutely an astonihing performance !! Wauw , Buddy Rich was just So incredible amazing , and what a great piano and Bass player here !! I remmeber seeing this as a youngster starting on Drums myself and was blown away. Top stars For this performance.

  • 3:12

    Willowcrest

  • I enjoyed a lot , bass solo , piano and drums ! great musicians

  • Jesus - What a bass player!!!!

  • The pianist played it quite well, but it definitely belongs on a trumpet.

  • Thanks so much. Oh man I knew it. Why are all of the great players that make such an impact on us have to leave so soon? He was so great. I hope to play like Dave Carpenter someday, or as close as humanly possible!!!

  • Is that a single stroke role at time 5:37, shit!

  • Buddy Rich is the man... Just had a bit of an anger issue

  • @tonilrogers Yes it is, buddy almost never uses double stroke rolls! :)

  • He told me once that he doesn't even think about it, just whatever comes out.

  • I'll bet they're playing instinctively, not counting out the beats.

  • @letsif well i'd imagine so

  • I love the brush work Mr. Rich is doing, hahaha honostly i love pretty much everything he does

  • Oh I love the tone of the bass!!!

  • Great player isn't he

  • Sorry, just read the full description!!!

  • Does anybody know if that is the late Dave Carpenter on bass guitar?

  • @pulgabros Yes that is Dave. He is from Miamisburg, Ohio, near me. Talked to him several times while he was with Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman's last band.

  • 7:23 - Buddy's face has, "Yeah we kicked ass!" all over it.

  • Ha ha, funny as hell.

  • @Antiks72

    LOL

  • @Antiks72 lmfao hahaha good description. I agree, it does.

  • @Antiks72 His face looks like that the whole way through tbh :D

  • @cornflakeassassin Yeah they were in the zone. This is my favorite rendition of All Blues -- it's just perfect.

  • i can watch this over and over again

    great brushwork by the king

    :]

  • Wow! That was great! One doesn't often hear Buddy playing with brushes. As a former drummer, I can honestly say that brush playing is more difficult than stick playing. Brushes just don't "bounce" off the drums and cymbals the way sticks do. It's all in the wrists. Brushes are also so much more subtle than sticks. I wish a lot more rock drummers would realize that playing softly can be just as cool as beating the crap out of the drums.

  • A lot of rock drummers would have done better to start with jazz, that's for sure.

  • ha yes, thats my problem, ive only recently got into playing jazz, damn this stuff is HARD

  • Don't give up, whatever you do. I quit playing guitar and regretted it ever since.

  • lol, i wouldnt even think of it, i love drums just jazz is so differeennt from rock

  • That's awesome, you should upload some videos. :)

  • lol i will maybe, :]

i have some of me and my band, but thats really simple stuff, and mostly were just playing around so none of the fills are in time or anything XD

  • No shit. I am 43 years old and have been trying to emulate this guy since I was 14. Feathering the bass drum all the time is a bitch!

  • LOL yeah

  • what do you mean when you say feathering the bass drum? sorry if that's a dumb question lol i'm not a drummer

  • The Feathering technic is playing the bass drum very softly on each time of the mesure: (1,2,3,4) generaly played with the hi-hat on 2, 4.

Like it's the case here, but the mesure is counted in 3, so the hi-hat will mostly be played on the 2nd time...howhever, Buddy allows himself a little bit of fantasy :)

  • interesting. thanks

  • well usually in rock music you here the bass on beats 1 and 3 or 1,3 and 4. In big band jazz throughout the song you hit the bass softly on every beat 1,2,3,4, and also hit accents that are louder during this. You may play eight normal beats then play two accented eighth notes then go back to the straight beats. It is at the drummers discretion and creative ideas. Watch Buddy Rich Big Band plays "Wind Machine". His bass goes all the time. Not just accents.

  • Some did. Neil Peart.

  • @zildj1an Couldnt have said it better myself my friend

  • @zildj1an

I'm waiting for my Steve Gadd brushes to show up on order for me at the local shop and I get to teach myself all about em. :D

  • @zildj1an A few rock drummers have done it in the past. Mitch Mitchell does some nice brushwork in Up From The Skies, for example (well, it's really just stick playing, but it's alright). But it's not really a rock thing. One of my favorite brush performances is Max Roach doing Nommo. It is a real art to play with brushes. I myself never did it enough to get really good at it. Mybe one day I'll get my wife to hide my sticks so all I got is brushes.

  • You just know how much B loved Dave's bass playing. He always featured him in at least one song. Dave really put out didn't he ??

  • Best brush-work I've ever seen/heard! Buddy was in a class by himself on drums - swings his @ss off, seems to effortlessly DRIVE his band, whether a quartet or big band - which leads to the following:

It's a MISREPRESENTATION to call this "Buddy Rich Big Band" - more like "Buddy Rich Quartet".

Feel free to correct the name any ol' time!

Y'know, lots of fans are scouring this site, looking for Small Group Buddy - unfortunately, they'll NEVER find this one, since it's mis-labeled.

  • @stradman37...

    buddy rich quartet?

    its a trio....

  • Dave Carpenter's a BADASS! Super bass.

  • he probally got really old because i think he played at nights so dats my opinion

  • I have GOT to get this on FLAC or CD.

  • They're dressed like Best Buy employees

  • HAHAHAHA

  • lol that actually cracked me up.

  • Buddy looks really old in this video...

    god,

    really old,

plays like he's in prime still,

but he looks really old in this one.

  • Every time I listen to this, the hippest brush playing ever, nobody has ever played like this...

  • sorry but who is the pianist?

    thanks

  • Bill Cunliffe, says in description.

  • i like the bass players glasses and he is very good using all of his fingers to play

  • the bass player has some nice glasses on

  • lol I know what you mean, All Blues is possibly the most overplayed jazz standard ever, but I could listen to this version for hours straight and not get sick of it

  • He told me once to practice with brushes, they strengthen your hands, make them feel "light" he would say, they don't bounce, you have to pick them up, develops the "right" hand muscles, forearm down, elbows in close, arms should be able to swing like pendulums while you're practicing...no tension, he kept it in his chest muscles so the shoulders would be free...true story.

  • acedrumminman, thanks for sharing - any other stories to share?

  • Watch for the movie and book...

  • @SoupErman01 It's quite possible that title might have gone to "Round Midnight". It'd be interesting to find out if someone has a study on actually which one it is!

  • When he picks up the brushes and plays in three..he sounds like Tony only hipper...amazing touch, time.

  • Really, really, really digging the Bass-player. Buddy is great as always, of course.

  • That's the great Dave Carpenter, who passed away about 6 months ago, sadly. He played with Maynard's band, and also alot with Peter Erskine.

  • he was an incredible bass player sad that he passed away when he did

  • This video should be required viewing for all the Buddy Rich cynics out there. Man this is tasty!

  • Very Nice!!!!!

  • Even when he lays the sticks down, B is the greatest brush player of all time, too. I cry when he does stuff like "My Man's Gone Now." Busts me up every single time. (My dad died 2.4.92)

  • uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!! what a swing! and what a composition!!

  • All BLOWERS personified! & that is putting it mildly....

  • Excellent intro.....pure excellence. I've always loved this song. Miles would be very proud of this arrangement.

  • Yes, yes he would.

  • some great stuff

  • 100.000.000 starts for this performance! Normaly So What, All Blues and so one, is boring me, but this is really swinging.

    Go Buddy!

  • sorry i mean stars, not starts...

  • you're obviously not a trumpet player. lol

  • normally all blues is boring to you? ouch. it is arguably the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard- but hey, you know what they say "De gustibus non est disputandum"

  • RIP Dave Carpenter

  • 5 stars.The Master

  • Bill Cunliffe has incredible sense in music, but unfortunately he often be underrated.

  • I love the tone of BR's brushes, cymbals... everything. This is almost as good as "Someday My Prince Will Come" off "No Funny Hats".

  • thanks for this! Cunliffe is a favorite of mine and his ballad playing is especially beautiful. great to hear and see this - I loved Buddy's playing in trios and his brushwork - always a joy.

  • yyeahh bill!!

  • Bill Cunliffe is awesome!

  • Who's the drummer on this video?

    (just kidding)

  • You worried me for a brief second there ma man. I logged into this Cunliff-involved posting on your recommendation from one of your utube offerings (Polker-Dots and MBs?). I'd never heard of the dude before today. This is great.

  • Check out the brushwork of the Master here. Incredible ~

  • good video i was expect by buddy rich

  • The bassist on this post is absolutely shit hot. I think he played in the same band with Buddy in the "Mr Drums" set filmed for TV in San Francisco in 1985 ish. Looks like the same pianist too. Suprised I have not seen Channel one from this on the tube. Also Mark57-I have finally found the parky 81/82 interview. Just not complete.

  • It's incredible how this swings. I love Buddy's brush work. He's really good at playing musically as opposed to playing "in your face" with sticks. One of my faves is "Wave" off of "Stick it" (I think). Great feeling.

  • I think the pianist is matt harris

  • The piano player here is Bill Cunliff. He is one of my favorite players. Played extensively with the Clayton brothers. Would love to see him team up with Jeff Hamilton on a trio date.

  • Thank you for posting this video, which actually shows Buddy Rich in a trio subset of his big band. Can you please say what year this was shot, where and who is the ryhthm section with Buddy?

  • The concert was at the 1984 (November 3rd) JazzFest in Berlin. I did a quick search couldn't find any information about who the bassist and pianist are, if you do manage to find out I would love to know ^_^

  • Dave Carpenter - Bass

    Bill Cunliffe - Piano

  • Mind blowing from Buddy, Dave Carpenter, and Bill Cunliff. Almost as good as West Side Story Suite.
