see, you are HALF right... the BASE engine was OHV before 2001, and after came stock with a SOHC, i have a SOHC 4.0l that came with my 1997 AWD XLT, it was an option in base models, standard in higher end models from 96-2001, and u said "ive personally driven a '99 explorer" i OWN one, i know that my 4.0l sohc beats those cars, now, the OHV sucks ass, but not a rebuilt 4.0l SOHC. not trying to be another know-it-all dick, but i have the car, and if you want proof, i can get video
ok, i think your info is a little misguided, in 1997 ford offered two v6 engines sohc 4.0l which produced 205hp and the ohv v6 which produced arond 160. i have a 1997 explorer with a 4.0l sohc and that sucker will go!!! i can beat out a crown vic, 3.5l charger (police) and a 3.7l 2011 mustang (off the line, and for about 13-14ft) gotta love awd! :)
as for power, get a tuner, run 89 or 92, cold air intake, and bigger injectors... just an fyi... ur tranny will go soon after upgrades. good luck.
Go to google search for consumerguideauto, and then search a 1997 explorer/ranger read both horsepower ratings and then tell me i'm wrong. Or better yet go to any other reputable website and look it up. 3.0 was 150 and 4.0 was 160 and in 2001 ford changed the 4.0 from OHV to SOHC and it gaind 50hp and then was rated at 207 in ranger and 210 in explorer. Ive prsonaly driven a '99 explorer and couldnt get any better 0-60 than 10 seconds and the crown and charger both do it in 8.
that has to be a v8 right? i got the 4.0 and it takes about half an hour to reach that speed. love the car, just wish it had more go to it. any secrets you're willing to share so i can actually get some more pickup with the 4.0 6 are welcome.
Well yeah this has the 4.0 SOHC version thats in the 2001-up rangers which is 208hp/238ft.lbs if you have a 4.0 that was made before 2001 than it only has 160hp at 210 ft.lbs.....Good upgrade for these 4.0s are a simple CAI which supposedly helps them alot...If your willing to spend a lot o cash get the roots style supercharger for 5,000, i cant remember who makes it but im pretty sure theres 2-3 different brands...They are usually for explorers but they have the same motor so itd fit n ur 4.0
8.4 seconds seriously rofl my 1994 dakota with cold air intake holley intake manifold holley v8 throttle body (form 5.2l magnum ) flowtech raptor exhaust autolite 3923 plugs and new brass cap with 8" high conduction plugs puts out almost 300hp and does 0-60 in 6 seconds flat. Stock it does 0-60 in 7.6 seconds.

@sharpshot411 thats not really fair if ur comparing a dakota V8 to a ford V6. lets see a stock 1994 dodge V6 do better than 8.4 seconds.
