To get the green effect, wouldn't small copper elements in the flame path work?

Same as the film prop. Calcium carbide with water, gives off acetylene gas.

Same chemical reaction is used in old style miner's lamps.

Ignited with a glow plug in the tip. The switch turns the glow plug on and off.

Acts as a safety.

Also during filming, the added flux to get the green color. It gums up the works very badly.

So I won't be doing that anytime soon.
