OCD does not exsist. It is corn syrup, nicotine, and processed food. Grow up. Religion can cause brain damage. Faith is a clear mind without regret and a relationship with God and that is it.
I always thought that the religious prophets had schizophrenia as well because they kept hearing voices in their heads and made up really creative stories and tend to be paranoid. Mohammed for instance wrote beautiful (and crazy) poetry. Schizophrenics tend to be creative. I've noticed the similarity between religion and OCD as well. My friend has OCD and he has rituals he does to purify things in order to make him feel anxious. The thing is that the anxiety always gets worse.
HEY SAME WITH ME. I developed OCD during childhood in Devout christian family. I would look at all religious symbols and paintings in the living room 3 times every minute. I would repeateadly say "Thank God, Thankyou Jesus" etc etc etc. When I Left christianity I m LOT FUCKIN BETTER!
I think it rather reductionist to see something as varied as religion and worshipped by a diverse number of individuals as originating from 1 or a number of basic causes.
I'm not sure that OCD can be thought of as a reason for the origin of a religion... but I can see how it is a potent vehicle for its persistence.
The origin of religion I think is really just anxiety in general - we're not comfortable not knowing - creates a lot of anxiety, so to remove it, we make something up, and convince ourselves it's truth. Anxiety removed, but then OCD kicks in to ensure we keep our comfort.
Yes. OCD is an anxiety disorder, so you can rightly call it "anxiety." OCD is one head of the many headed dragon of anxiety; and, as you said, perhaps the most powerful in the persistence of religion.
@boenrobot I think you hit the nail pretty much on the head. Anxiety is a function for survival, and upon the human animal becoming self-aware and aware of it's eventual death, it needed a relief from that anxiety, and that's where religion finds its origin.
Good video. You've highlighted one of the big "unsung" origins of religion - OCD.
Subjectively, OCD is experienced as informal "magical thinking."
I don't think I had crippling OCD - but it was distinctly present in my past, and was never crushed until I formally abandoned supernatural explanations entirely.

Religious or not, OCD is a fitting acronym for any obsessive compulsive delusion.

Rather than saying OCD is the origin, it would probably be more accurate to say OCD is the definition of a collective religious delusion.

I have Asperger's Syndrome. I display many OCD like symptoms. But I don't like to say it is OCD... I don't know why I felt I had to say this.

@rampaginwalrus Because you have Asperger's.

OCD isn't the single cause, but I believe it's one of the major causes and sustainers, at least in earlier times.
