This caught the vibe of '74 unlike anything, that cold wind of change blowing through the world and music. The synths gave this a heavier sound and the lyrics were almost downcast.
Dream Gerard is deeply innovation, try playing the piano part alone, on piano obviously, and see how you do! If you're not a musician you really cannot appreciate what has gone into writing just this song, never mind the whole album, simply listening to it it's very easy to be critical of a song but if you have no idea how to compose or what goes into the process of composition, and how much knowledge of music theory one needs, not to mention a lot of time and effort and creative energy!!
Some stupid people compare Phil Collins with Steve Winwood and they are really assholes and retarded fucking brains that ignore that Steve Winwood was an innovator and creator of a whole new musical language into an experimental concept which was the base for what really was the next music. When Winwood was in big leagues, Collins was a mediocre beginner musician who did really know where he was standing.
still listen to this album. quite a wonderful journey into mother nature and the nature of the human mind. from walking in the wind to when the eagle flies it just simmers and soars with deep insights and tasty sounds. incredable carreer mr winwood
@MrAugustus88 you got to be kidding, this i also agree is coolest tune, but title song is good, walking in the wind is also well done, and dream gerrard is another good spacey song
All the synth on this album is good - possibly Winwood's best ever. Too bad he wasn't happy otherwise. Personally I prefer the synth outro to "Walking In the Wind" or all through "Dream Gerard" (my nomination for Best Traffic Ever). But hey, I even like the bizarrely tinny guitar on "Something New".
BTW there's an awesomely lovely synth, very similar in character, in a version of Gregory Isaac's "My Time" (there's at least one version without it)
I wrote the lyric "Go slow workers, with Union minds, striking out for better times" on the wall in the 10-71 building at Boeing of Renton, during their strike of 1989. It was way too appropriate. "apropos" ancient UNIX command @boeing.
my favorite album. being sort of a concept album it's better to hear the whole thing in it entirety. that puts it in context just like stomu yumashta's master peace "GO" with winwood. the meaning is somewhat lost when broken down into songs yet the songs are so fine it's still rewarding and inspiring. do you hear me mother nature?
@roscoegino yeah, won only one grammy in all the years he has performed, and that was for Higher Love, a more pop oriented song, songs like this one and other Traffic tunes were SO overlooked through the seventies. My God, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys was one of the finest jams ever laid down!!!
More musical dexterity from traffic!
Stunning use of the moog synth and stirring instrumental outro.
It did'nt get much better then this in 1974! ...and i was only five than.

@emptypages1970 I was at a time when the synth didn't overpower the other elements of the song. Then the mid 80s came. ;-(

This is the only amazing song on this crapy album, it makes mad use of moog synth and combines jazz fusion.

this is the only noteworthy jazz fusion-progg song on the album. the rest of the eagle album sucks.

yeah, I catch myself doing that once in a while. So embarrassing. And I do know the difference between music and basketball

I fell in love with Steve W and his music the first time I heard "Gimme Some Loving" with the Spencer Haywood Group when I was in 9th grade.

Doesn't get much credit?! He IS in the Hall of Fame... and amongst his PEERS he is considered impeccable!!!!!

I had this in vinyl until it got damaged, so I bought another one. Then, when CD's came out, I got it on CD.
This is an all-time favourite cool tune to space out on......
