  • Wow. It would be great fun to do a literature analysis on Jack's novel.

  • This is so perfectly done. The creepy background noise. The weird camera angles. Disturbingly isolated room. Jack Nicholson creeping. I love this movie.

  • Why so shocked. He could make it as a modern poet. It's pure art.

  • @gorend Sadly, that's probably true.

  • did any one else see where it said all work and no play makes jack a dull bog or bot

  • how do you like it?

  • i saw the entire collection of this typed out material a few days back. its at an archive an in my college. i have HUUUUUGE respect for whoever typed it all out. and yes it was typed out on a typewriter! there must easily be some 500 pages of that... or more...

  • @blankblank1985 you know it was Kubrick who wrote it all out.

  • @zero15388 am not sure. i was at this research centre and they told us that this girl typed it all out...

  • Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V...... oh wait

  • (How I feel at 2am, writing my research paper due the next day)

  • @talkincupcakes6t exactly the same brought me here today... What a movie.

  • 0:48 "Alll" Typo.

  • @Nobodylovesyou100 there were dozens of typos.

  • No tv and no beer makes jack something something

  • Thumbs up if you see the type-o :P

  • Haha i saw a misspelling at 00:46 dyull boy lol

  • this was so boring. surprise on how many likes it has, im guessing everyone here is a big fan of horror film, well this wasnt scary or entertaining yet it was liked by the majority, my guess... loyal fans perhaps well w.e im just saying this video was overated if no1 will say it then i guess i have to, the film itself not so sure tho havent seen it but if i have watched it on tv and this part came up i would of just changed the channel, and if you bother to insult me have a valid arguement

    peace

  • @Kamorok All I have to say is that it's probably better in context.

Also, I refer you to mrsmusicman's comment.

  • @Kamorok You're a moron. Go somewhere else with your stupid run on sentences, please.

  • "Trapped in this enormous hotel for three months with Jack Nicholson. Okay, that'd be enough to make anyone a little paranoid. Let's just check and see how that novel -- FUCK. LOOK HOW LONG HE'S BEEN CRAZY."

  • Someone had to type all of those pages. Worst job ever?

  • @Verendus0 All work and no- ah, forget it.

  • @Verendus0 Kubrick probably insisted that they write all those pages...

  • @Verendus0 they could have just copied and pasted each line over and over again. lol

  • @Russian07 Dude, this was 1980. lol.

  • @Verendus0 And I wonder if the mistypings are intentionnal...

  • @Verendus0 Now that makes Jack a dull boy.

  • Comment removed

  • @Verendus0 That and putting together the sets for Saw 2...

  • @Verendus0 I guess she's not the only one who hasn't heard of a photocopier!

  • @dvdsmlprstylr You're dumb. Every page is different.

@Verendus0 It shows like 18 pages. Would take half an hour.

  • @Verendus0 They didn't have copy/paste back then, either.

  • It's amazing how something so simple can be so scary.

  • up there with those 23 blank pages Beckett wrote

  • Best scene. The whole Movie jack appears to be writing a book but LOL JK! he's coming to kill you

  • After about 5 pages why is she still turning? Did she expect to find all rainbows and unicorns makes jack a happy boy or something?

  • @mosh115pit Personally, after the 2nd page, I'd start running back up to barricade myself and wait for the cops.

  • @mosh115pit Well, she was curious to see how the story ended, is all.

  • If Jack plays and uses his imagination, then he will be a smart and creative boy.

  • All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy

  • All_work_and_no_play_makes_Jack_a_dull_boy

    Uncyclopedia

  • Hell, I would read it

  • started out well, with a solid middle to the overall story arc, but i felt the ending was disappointing and similar to many other conclusions in recent novels.

  • 'punishment exercises' at school, like the blackboard in The Simpson's were all about wriitng the same sentence over and over again.

  • 'punishment exercises' at school, like the blackboard in The Simpson's, were all about writing the same sentence over and over again.

  • 0:40 CTRL key fail thumbs up if you get it

  • Too bad Ctrl+v wasn't around in those days

  • HOW D'YA LIKE IT?!

  • All work and no play is going to make my crotch decay.

  • Imagine how bored the prop makers were whilst making that!

  • @Whamesl0l I've heard once that it was only one person that typed all that out on a typewriter

  • 4 guys are dull boys.

  • copy and paste. saves time

  • I had a big wheel just like that when I was a kid. This would have been around the same time the movie came out.

  • I don't really care for this movie since it's so different from the book, but this is one scene I actually like. This is the point where the viewer gets actual confirmation that Jack has gone stark raving bonkers, and it's handled very well. I swear I've seen an edition of the book that included this scene, but it could be my imagination

Oh great now I may end up like Jack Nicholson.

  • I wouldn't buy that book. Looks like a boring read.

  • Oh look! The Shining predicted how memes would be made!

  • 0:51 "All work and no play makes Jack a dull bog"

If Jack had Chrome he wouldn't be having these spelling errors.

  • @coolstorybro7 That's not a spelling error. That's a typo...

Since bog is still a proper English word, Chrome would do fuck all. :D

  • All those poor trees D:

  • Would suck to be the guy who actually had to type those

  • Careful bitch! I havent numbered those pages yet!

  • congratulations, your on memebase!

  • All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy, but typing this even more dull. Poor Jack, he needs his Nintendo & Sanity back

  • @ 0:49 What the heck is a bog? And i thought Jack was human... not a bot... hmph.

  • If snooki can make a new York times bestseller, anyone can. I say go for it Jack.

  • I want this book.

  • @0:47 I spy some typosssss XD "bog" in one line, "bot" in another... Okay, he's still a little sane, he makes mistakes ;)

  • If i was in that hotel that long......I'd take the time to master that piano!

  • All work and no play makes Jack a dull gay

  • Alll work and no play makes Jack a dull bot

  • One of the creepiest scenes ever filmed. Sent chills through my spine from the first second.

  • 0:45 - 0:50 The "mistakes" or differences in the words (ply, pllay, Jaca, dyll, dullboy, No, JaCa, bog, noplay, bot, ply, maKes, dyll)) are actually meant as a hint to viewer that he was on the verge of snapping... which is confirmed once she starts reading the rest of the novel.

  • the scariest part of the movie is shelley duvall

  • Little did she realize that she'd discovered a box of examples for his magnum opus on typography. No, she immediately leapt to the conclusion that he was a nutball who'd been frittering away his time while the last remnants of his sanity slipped away. Then, when he came seeking a little constructive criticism, she set upon him with a baseball bat! Women, right? I mean, I'd never condone his ultimately going after her with an ax, but I can't help but point out that she started it.

  • Then he said "How do you like it?" knowing he wrote the same line over and over and over again. That's pure insanity.

  • And here I thought Jack was doing work this entire time. He turned out to be a psychopath. This part was creepy.

  • This had to be the one of the creepiest scenes in the film. It gives you just a tiny glimpse into just how long Jack has been going crazy. Paper after paper, in different forms, is All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The realization that you've been living with someone who's going crazy is scary. That's what I always liked about this movie. The build-up and tiny things that you piece together by the end of the movie.

  • 0:51 read the paper

All work and NO play makes JACa dull boy.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull bog.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull bot.

  • it's Kubrick's secretary who had to type the whole lot of pages, crazy huh. It took her about 6-7 months. I love this scene, really epic.

  • the ultimate office prank.

  • ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY.ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. aLL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. why did I just type this? I must be crazy. Well, time to go axe murder my family.

  • @misterGaz180 You, sir, are my hero.

  • Too much booze and no work makes Jonny a drunk boy.

  • I think what he was really trying to say is that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

  • I love how he used different types of writing, spacing and lining in these, like other novels would have throughout the book, as well as added typos, to make him seem even more fucking insane.

  • All play and no work makes Jack a dull boy...wait WHAT??? Dammit I made a typo!!!

  • See girl? this is what happens when your husband don't g3et any, if he wants to murder you, it was your fault because you didn't gave him any sex.

  • Jack, how about a nice hot bowl of copy pasta?

  • This is by far one of the more disturbing parts of this movie. She realizes that he's been crazy THE ENTIRE TIME!

  • I would have typed this high out of my mind

  • i feel bad for the guy who had to type all that out

  • @133742069 My sister back in the 70's was one of those "typing pool" girls that could type like somewhere around 80 - 100 words a minute - Something like that would've been ripped out in no time by a bunch of those girls (and guys if there were any working in a typing pool back then)

  • hahaha "How do you like it?"

  • this movie is actually fucking scary

  • He's just trying to say he needs to get laid. Geesh!

  • 0:50 the line says alll and bot instead of all and boy

  • Though the first draft still needs some work, Jack's novel is still a lot better than Twilight.

  • @ThomasJO89 OMG that made me lol so hard xD

  • that book is gonna suck

  • OH NO!!! THE DAYS BEFORE COPY AND PASTE!!!!

  • please need to write a book report by tommorow and didnt read the book, is this part in the book the shining?

  • When I saw the sentences in the typewriter, my Oh-shit-ometer was pretty high.

  • @Tubarulz64 LOL OH-SHIT-OMETER xD

  • cult scene

  • Oh! I read that novel once... Really predictable. Once you've read the first page you know how the rest will be.

  • that scene scared the shit out of me when i was a kid!

  • If only Jack had a computer. He could have used copy/paste to write all those lines. Would have saved himself a lot of time, not to mention his sanity. Although the movie would have been a lot less scary.

  • @securityguardclass4 When I saw the movie I was not impressed, I was like "lol...copy-paste", then I realized that didn't exist in those times

  • @securityguardclass4 But Jack isn't even there.... OR IS HE?!?!

  • @securityguardclass4 ...he could have also used a chainsaw to chase his wife through the hotel. But axes have – just as typewriters – a special rustic style which is unique to them.

  • Apparently Kubrick demanded 170 or thereabouts takes from Shelley Duvall for one scene. That perfectionism shows in virtually every scene of this near perfect film - always will be my favourite horror movie.

  • maybe the next piece of paper witll say something different!

    nope.

    maybe the next!

    no.

    maybe the next..

    no!!

    really lady, what'd you expect?

  • all play and no work makes dull a jack boy

  • Great Scene!!! The way the suspense builds from the start when she walks up and looks over the page to when Jack is revealed is amazing filmmaking. The pulling of the pages, the cuts to her freaking. It's all perfect.

  • I would have enjoyed helping to make that part of the movie, I do that kind of stuff in my journal, typing its even neater!!

  • my review on jacks story:

amazing storyline and amazing characters. i got into it so much and i just think its so beautiful adding many combination's of comedy romance dark humor and many others i give the book a 10/10 :D

  • @raymaster56 Dude I have to agree. the character development was amazing and I loved how well evryflowed together in the story. However the ending was way too sad.

    -SPOILER ALERT-

Jack becomes a dull boy :(

  • One of my all time favorite scenes. It's a fine line between genius and madness. The realization of the latter on Shelly's face as she flips through the pages is what great cinema is all about.

  • idk why she keeps flipping through the pages...what does she think she's gonna find besides all work and no play yaddayadda ????? lol

  • @PianoMan53100 lmao ikr. Like she's
