  • I am sure that Jim is operating a puppet that became Roosevelt Franklin about a year later.

  • Actually, I barely remembered any of it...'til seeing Jim "sink" the boat at the very end, and suddenly it was "OH WOW THIS ONE!". Very odd what a 41 year old brain decides to remember...

  • couldnt stop laughing about the guy going riding in a car with his vrooming and how is the boat sinking??? haha lmfaaoo

  • jim sounds Irish in this video

  • What happened to that boat during the crashing incident between tha train and the car? Sinking to drown?

  • This first Guy always

    Cracked the hell out of

me as a kid wth his Vrooming.

  • Sesame Street was a huge part of everyone's childhood; even if you were "too old" to watch it, you could still find something entertaining about it . . . now it's basically "The Elmo Show" and all this stuff is pretty much forgotten. I didn't care how old I was when it was on (10 at the time it premiered in 1970). Just classic stuff here.

  • @elc1960

Actually, the show first came out in 1969. The year I was born! In any event, I see your point about it having become "The Elmo Show"! Although I have nothing against his character per se, I really do think that he monopolizes the show at the expence of good things like this song and skit!

  • @Smartboy8877 You are indeed correct - the show did indeed premiere in '69. I agree withyou 100%; Elmo isn't a bad character, but the show has become all about him. Not sure if Brian Henson has a contract with CTW to do skits using his dad's Muppets for the show anymore. Maybe he should reintroduce the kids to Bert & Ernie and the rest through some new bits.

  • @elc1960

You have just offered me some very interesting food for thought! Thank you for the response!

  • Here's a custom verse I thought up:

Oh, I'm goin' for a ride, gonna sit upon the seat,

Gonna pedal really fast, and dig the crazy beat,

And I'm gonna ring my bell, and I'm crusin' where I'd like.

Oh, I'm goin' for a ride. Goin' ridin' on a bike!

    And a bike goes....

    [bike horn: toot-toot toot-toot]

    And a bike goes...

    [bike bell: ring-ring ring-ring]

and I'm crusin' where I'd like. Oh, I'm goin' for a ride. Goin' ridin' on a bike.

  • @tpirman1982

You have a lot of creative juices! Always nice to find a new You Tube friend!

  • another song stuck in my head since 71 lol

  • @stevenlennon12 me too!

  • @UpRoaryus this one and The O Song lol

  • One of the VERY rare times we see Carroll Spinney performing other than Oscar or in the Big Bird costume lol

  • @sweetlife031 Well, keep in mind, during this first season of Sesame Street, there were just the three Muppeteers: Jim, Frank, and Caroll (with occasional assistance from others like John Lovelady and Jane Henson).

  • 2:12 Was just awesome!

  • 4 people were never kids......

  • Frank oz, Carroll Spiney, and Jim Henson,. the original rat pack of puppetry

  • amazingly coooooooooooool [:)

  • i wanna a ride in that super car, train, boat! [:) cooooooooool

  • the guy in the train seems perfectly pleasant.

  • Comment removed

  • 2:12, RAWR!

  • The car at 2:06 must've been driving over the speed limit.

  • Did you notice how fast the car was going at 2:06? Must've been driving over the speed limit.

  • I love their expressions as they watch Jim's AM sink.

  • @GroverKent

    What does AM stand for?

  • @Smartboy8877 Anything Muppets.

  • @Smartboy8877 AM is short for Anything Muppet. Anything Muppets (aka Anything People) are blank puppets that can be modified into new characters.

  • Frank's car runs on Detroit Diesel.

  • The boy in the police cap looks like Roosevelt Franklin.

  • @WWEChampion16 Could be a twin!

  • @WWEChampion16

I never thought of that, but now that you mention it, he does!

  • This would be a perfect way to teach kids how to swap insurance info in an accident.

  • '...and I'm gonna be a captain, and I'm gonna have a crew...' When I hear those lines, I know that I'm 'goin' for a ride' through my childhood years when I was able to watch great clips like this!

  • @d72jjpilc

It's not going to be much of a crew in a boat THAT size!

  • The most common post on youtube: I Totally Remember This!

    I do!

  • wtf scary dude

  • I was trying to remember the words to this as I was singing it to my son - he kept making up more and more vehicles - it got very creative. Finally I looked this up for the both of us to watch. He LOVES it. We've been dancing to it for about 20 minutes now. This is definitely timeless television. Oh - my son is also autistic, so this simple skit is obviously very accessible. Jim Henson was a genius!

  • you can tell this is Big bird and Bert.

    =o)

  • believe it or not, this one was seen as late as 1997.

  • @Turppa21

On Sesame Park (Canada's Sesame Street), some of the sketches from the first year, like the first Bert and Ernie sketches, were seen in the early 2000s! I wonder where I could find videos of Canadian Sesame Street? Because I live in and grew up mostly in Canada.

  • From 1969.

  • sooooooooooo cute

  • I was SO happy to find this video after singing it to my nephew last week - I remembered singing it to his mom years ago. Thx love2register!!!

  • I just loved this song when I was little! I hope they still run this on S S sometimes.

  • I doubt they show ANY '69-'70 skits these days

  • They don't even show any 89-90 skits anymore. That's how pathetic the show has gotten to be. They act as if it were a crime to show anything from before 1995.

  • All three of them are great, but Frank Oz steals the show as usual, hot-doggin' his little car around in the background while the other verses are being sung.

  • we have all done that with OUR first car at some point! LOL!

  • Yes he does, I laughed soooo hard when I saw this again, it brought tears to my eyes. Good memories.

  • HAHAHA...that's great !!!lol

  • This song appeared on the very first Sesame Street Album with the original cast. If I just listened to the record and didn't read the album cover, I could have mistaken the first two muppets for Bert and Big Bird.

  • Wow! I still have that old album laying around somewhere! A few ticks and pops... I remember this from back in '69. You're right, I almost forgot that it was not bert and BB...

  • Oh my god! I loved this when I was about 5 or 6. Now I guess the ending is of course a little predictable. Early form of Road Rage on Sesame Street. "Help Help I'm Sinking!"

  • The end is hysterical.

  • Looks like those guys were having waaaay too much fun performing this skit, especially Frank Oz zipping back and forth like a madman! :)

  • On the first LP of Sesamstraat this was sung by Bert, Ernie and Tommie.

  • I saw that sketch when I was five. When the first character said "sit behind the wheel", for years afterward, I thought he was referring to the left front wheel of the car.

  • Frank Oz is figgin brillant in this clip!!!

  • Züge haben keine Steuerräder!

  • I don't remember this clip, but I think I had the record, I know the song!! It could've re-aired 1980ish? Late 70's early 80's was my era! Before Elmo!

  • i still have the record, and the characters don't match for who I thought the muppets singing were :)

  • I know this is kinda before me a bit , but I remember seeing this as a kid....AND loved it.

    TYVM

  • i only liked the end

  • I like the ending.

Looks like Frank and his character had fun riding the car in the background. ;)

Sesame doesn't do much of the Muppet style comedy anymore.

  • A very unique role for Caroll Spinney, he's without Big Bird or Oscar.

  • Wow, Carol Spinney performing something other than Oscar or Big Bird!

  • Always funny at the very end. ''HELP, HELP, I'M SINKING!''

  • I love this song lol my dad told me how this was his favorite I especially love the end when they all crash and he's like help im sinking. Also the part where the car keeps going by the engineer when hes talking VROOOOM! lol i love this

  • How cute.

  • I so love this clip - I especially love the reaction of the car driver when he sees the boat! His antics were soooooo funny!!!!!

  • I love the improvisation at the end, with the captain's boat. A nice little song.

  • Believe it or not, this skit was seen right up until 1997.

  • They should still play it, the young ones today would love it

  • I love when Frank goes speeding by at 2:02... this one brings back just a flood of memories for me !! Thanx !!

  • A very good song from 1969 this is.

  • Thank you for finding and posting this! I remembered every lyric of this song1 Everytime I see this, I'm reminded of sitting with my cousins and eating a lunch of a bowl ofCampbell's Tomato soup and agrilled cheese sandwich made with Kraft American Cheese!

  • Hey I have a verse I just invented too here it is:

Oh I'm goin for a ride, going to travel to and fro.Going to pick up lots of folks, take em where they need to go.Yeah I'll ride around the town, and I won't put up a fuss.Oh I'm going for a ride, going riding in a bus.And the bus goes (HONK!HONK!),and the bus goes (HONK! HONK!).And I won't put up a fuss, going riding in a bus.

  • Hey, clever!

  • I always loved this song. I had it on a SS record when I was little.

  • i recognize frank oz and carroll spinneys voices....wow

  • Beware of old men in hats when they drive a car,,

  • I don't understand why they can't show this one on the show today. It would have fit in good to the episode from last season where Oscar and Grungetta were going to the Grouch races. Theyr'e so paranoid this days about what's "outdated" and what's not.

  • Pretty cool, but I like "Let's Go Driving," also written by Jeff Moss.

  • Cool

  • I just like the car guy rrrrrm-rrrrming around while the train guy sings, the parts around 1:08 and 2:03, RRRRRRRMMMM! crack me up. keep expecting him to smash into the wall!

  • I remeber seeing that after school

  • I wonder if Frank was trying to crack up Jim and Carroll by doing the vrroooom sound.

  • LOL, for some reason the Guy in the car, train and boat reminded me of Bart Simpson (Car) Milhouse (Train) and Martin Prince (Boat)

  • if it was Martin, at least he'd be prepared for a boating accident with 17 PAIRS of swim trunks!

  • @love2register

I see what you mean about Martin! His character was always way to rational and sensible for his own good! Poor guy!

  • @LincolnHeightsrocks

They remind me of the same thing now that you mention it.

  • Thanks so much for finding and posting this. I've been looking for it for ages. I remember being really freaked out as a kid as they watched him sinking.

  • Car guy sorta had a Freddie Kruger-like look going. LOL!!

  • The train engineer sounds more like the big bird we have now, this was made when big bird sounded like he was on something.

  • Amazing. I always loved that car!!!

  • I like how the boat is able to float while the train and car can drive.

  • I got a verse for ya:

Oh, I'm goin' for a ride, gonna ride down the street.

Yeah, it's gonna be fun, ring by bell at people I meet.

And I love to pedal 'round, gonna ride where I like.

Oh, I'm goin' for a ride, goin' riding on a bike!

And the bike goes [ding! ding!]

And the bike goes [toot! toot!]

Gonna ride where I like, I'm goin' riding on a bike!

  • I love seeing the other Muppets that Spinney performed in the early days. And I definitely remember this segment!

  • This is one of my all time favorite skits. Thank you for posting it. :) I loved how the other two vehicles kept speeding during the singing.

  • What's up with train rider never coming back?

  • Train routes, I guess. Just like the MBTA and Commuter Rails

  • I know what will his folks think?

Also he laughs at the fact that he hit the boat causing it to sink!

    OH well it's just pretend.

  • Great skit for travel fans !

  • Cool! I don't remember the clip, but I do remember the song from one my Sesame Street records.

  • I had that record too!

  • I remembered this when this first aired. Thank you for posting it.

  • I love Jim's ad lib at the end...priceless!

  • my Jim moment on this one is after he says "gonna have a crew" when he slides to the side :)

  • those to the side dance moves were always my favorite
