  • I can hear it in the diesel cab now, "Good Lord, Nigel, did you see what just overtook us?"

    Great video work!

  • Nothing wrong with that, great contrast - thanks

  • I liek trainz... :)

  • There's nothing wrong with this. Great piece of footage ! 5*+

  • @gordon1066thomas957 Cheers man, glad its come out really well

  • You never know how Steam Engines have their uses as they are since British Railways. :)

  • Nice shot

  • very well timed shot! 5*s

  • Made my day seeing Tornado beat it!

  • Shame on you for even thinking of not sharing this!

  • @U33C Oh hey it was a slight disappointment at start but then decided to upload it after thinking how you lot would react

  • @GreatWestern175 ...... You know GreatWestern175 it always amazes me the never ending trite replies on posts about bike versus car or steam versus diesel. The 66 only weighs 127 tons and has 3000 hp on tap. The Tornado on the other hand has only 2680hp but weighs in at 166 tons with tender plus 34.5 tons of coal and water, a total of 200 tons. Do you lot understand the power to weight ratio? If the 66 was pulling the same 13 coaches it would blitz the Tornado! Be sensible!

  • go steame!!! tht ews frieght train never seemed to end

  • Awesome footage - well done

  • Excellent footage, what do you record with?

  • @BritishTrainVideos Panasonic NV-GS 400 a non-HD camera but very good camera just hope it dont break anytime soon

  • Wasn't going to upload it? its great - almost unique.

  • @MrKnowwun Well all this was meant to be just Tornado in this scene and supposed to of been on the relief line not on the fast, was wanting it to be a resemblance of the pre electrified ECML of the mid 1950s, but all didnt go to plan. But I suppose a clip of steam and diesel alongside each other does work out well

  • The 66 had no chance Ryan, fantastic footage...well done....Bob

  • @robmasterman I dont think 66s can stand any chance against some mainline steam engines

  • nice tones from tornado there! lol

  • I enjoyed this too, thanks! I guess a particular satisfaction seeing steam thrashing a diesel and looking so spectacular in the process, but mostly I think it's just that as far as trains go I like 'em all, the more the better. Lovely job on the filming, by the way :-)

  • Cracking capture right time at the right place, Tornado was like Lewis Hamilton and the 66 was like Del Boy in his Reliant Robin!!! Thanks for posting and all the best for 2012.

    Cheers Phil.

  • @981smithy Right place Right time, Tornado like many big wheeled pacifics are real greyhounds where as you look at a 66 thats more a traditional freight locomotive built for power and not speed

  • lol

  • Hey, that a special video of the extra kind, not easy to arrange, but couldn't be better. Thank you for uploading. A russian reporter would comment: "while the American loko got a glorious second place, the British only got last but one".

  • @collieultimo It wasn't something I arranged I only wanted Tornado at first to resemble the 1950's ECML and when that 66 came along my reaction was flawed

  • I am glad you did upload this, I enjoyed the contrast of seeing them together!

  • Cracking video, Tornado looking good and seriously capable of much higher mainline speed. To be fair it almost made the 66 look stationary!! Thanks for posting, Dave.

  • @rosegrovempd1 Aye thats what A1s were built for to haul heavy high speed trains, Class 66s can go 75mph but I think they're restricted to 60mph in some cases, mind you what your seeing here is two success story's briefly running alongside each other

  • IMO steam and diesel compile really well like this on the mainline - that is, as long as they are not on the same train (✿◠‿◠) .... just a light hearted comment!!!!

You got such a special shot because you are out there videoing engine after engine after engine, so in my book your love of steam has given you a nice reward for all your hard work. 22 + 1 (mine!) likes (TUs) for 163 views must be near a YouTube record!!!

    Enjoy Christmas.…..☁☁☁☁☁⁘⁙⁚⁛…..Hᴜɢʜ….TU…..ツ

  • @HughFromAlice Cheers for commenting Hugh. I never knew there be so much interest in this maybe I was just fortunate to be in the right place at the right moment. I originally only wanted it to be just Tornado and not any other traction in the shot. But...the GWML being a busy line you can't do much about that, as mentioned I was disappointed at first there being a diesel but in the end I decided how you lot would benefit from this.

  • The shed never stood a chance, nice video.

  • Steam 1 Diesel 0 Nice shot. I also filmed Tornado yesterday passing West Brompton. Please take a look and comment. Barry

  • That is amazing!

  • Hi Ryan: if you actually wanted a shot like that, you could wait forever!! so it is a unique clip. Have a good Christmas and see you lineside in 2012. Alan & Margaret

  • @Steamclips I suppose I'l have to believe you there! It wasn't exactly what I wanted but it just seem to happen. Have a good Christmas to you all out there aswell and see you in 2012

  • goes to show steam dominated diesels any day :D

  • Ryan, Great capture in very difficult lighting conditions. Thanks for sharing. Regards, John

  • @molzips lighting conditions were fine its just I had to colour correct the shot as it had a red cast in it which I altered

  • Nice one, I saw these two a little further up, just outside Didcot

  • And we have a winner!

  • @edsutton115 Tornado being the obvious one

  • great, nice to see steam and diesel complimenting each other, i dont understand why some dont like diesel, they sound blooming great, great catch

  • @EWS60500 well im glad to get a few responses that steam and diesel compile well on the mainline i.e the 4 track mainlines

  • Fantastic video, I'm glad you decided to share it.

  • @mollsmyre Wasn't originally but though 'give it a go'

  • Great to see steam win!! :))

  • I'm glad you did. Excellent shot of Tornado at speed. The 66 stood no chance. Nice one.

  • @siobhan104 aye the 66 was obviously slower as they usually are where ever they go so 66s stand no chance for 75mph steam locos

  • Nice prospective there. Steam against diesel and as it should be Tornado won. I got her at Didcot going like the clappers. Andy

  • @TopGearFan09 Strange though as I was originally intentioned on getting Tornado and was p***** off at first when the 66 came by

  • @TopGearFan09 I really wanted Tornado to be faster than this but knowing DBS crews they probably won't allow it
