@meyer2911 It isn't, I already opened it, but it seems that its restarting because of an overheat in some of its parts, maybe it restarts (over and over in a row) is due to a mechanism of defence from the heat
im going to look for my Nintendo 64 tomorow and im going to be pissed if my mom sold it and if i find it i think i need to buy a new cable because i think it works it just doesnt show up on the screen and my mom thinks its "broken"
@aragoza2950 The RGB scart cable... try another one. For example the Super Nintendo or Gamecube cable, they are the same. If does not work, than it is a problem inside the console :s
@TheBigBlueberry9876 technology is actually quite a large word. four syllables. and the reason i pointed it out is because you called someone fucking stupid. so. in conclusion, you fail.
Thanks for posting this video illogitech, I wanted to know if there was any store I could actually go in and purchase the 4.5 mm you mentioned. I'm in the US and have had bad luck with buying stuff online. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
I bought the 4,5mm and 3,8mm in ebay, in a sellerstore in the USA, in California if i remember well... and i live in Italy, so it took 10 days to arrive, but all was ok. I suggest you to buy it as i did in ebay. I don't know if you can find this in electronics hardware stores, or maybe DIY stores.
i've never actually owned a nintendo 64 before until i bought one the other day lol but it's not working properly. like the red light will come on but there's nothing on the screen, the game won't start and it's just black. and i had my friend who's had a N64 for years look at it and she doesn't know what the problem is so i was wondering if you have any ideas? thanks!
i got a question, while playing a game, sometimes it will glitch meaning it starts to freeze up and become unplayable. is that the cartridge or the console that is glitching?
@ProudPlasticPaddy it has happened also to me, i think both console or cart could be the problem. Cart damaged in his pins, or just dust to clean away, or console that is overheating too much and freeze up, and maybe cleaning can be a solution, sometimes too much dust overheats console and computer, and when you remove the dust, all plays fine. If not, it's a hardware proble,
@illogitech thank you, I've also seen that it might be the game I am playing, Majora's Mask. A lot of people have had similar problems with this game, describing the same type of freezing that's been happening to me, i.e. screen going black, red horizontal line in the upper left hand corner of the screen, sound still playing but scratchy backround, then it reveals an image from the game and stays like that.
I tried cleaning it and it seemed to work..for now hopefully
@illogitech I have an N64 console and i think it's broken. The game's are not ruin. It's just that when i put my N64 game cartridge in. It start's but it freezez like in 2 second's. First i thought it was my game but when i put 4 or 5 more game's in my console. It happen's the same thing it freezez like in 2 second's. And the game's are not broken. I think there's something wrong with my console. What should i do.
@TheNatkidd Ok, console is fucked up... what should you do? Seriously, buy a new one! It's quick and cheaper than fix your console... ebay, forums, 2nd hand shops... N64 is easy to find and with less than 50 $ tou have a new one, boxed and sealed... 15-20$ a used one. I changed sometimes my broken consoles too, useless to repair sometimes.
@illogitech I cant do that. Please can you try to think of a way to try to fix it. It's not the game's not those yellow white and red wire. Something. Just think of a way man. Please.
@TheNatkidd I don't have an idea....maybe the graphic chip, i got a similar problem with my computer... i changed my nvidia and all runs well now. Maybe the chip has overheated and now it turns automatically off when too hot. For this problem i have not a solutio... try to search in internet and specialised forums. If you just buy a new console, you are ok, but i understand that if you cant do it, it's really bad :(
@illogitech I meant box and sealed, those are loose, well, as far as i can see. IF you could find one like boxed and sealed. I would really apriciate it, ive been trying to find one for a while, and im no where near rich..
@182hotrod Ah sorry! You are right, sealed it is around 80 euro in italy, but 2 years ago i found 3-4 for 50 euro, now the price is higher :s here one with 70 euro 160604975279
First, to clean and fix it, you have to open it, and this is what i show in this video. I think that showing how to clean some dust or dirt is useless, everybody can do it, there are no special advertising in the way you can do it! Then i wrote also fix, i don't show how to fix because i had nothing to fix, lol :D but if someone has to repair or mod it, just ask here or search in internet, there are lot of peolpe and pages showing this thing. But first, open it! You did not miss anything!
ummmm i dont mean to sound like a douche or anything. but all i seen you do was take it apart. i didnt see you clean or fix anything. did i just miss that or what?
When i turn on my n64, the screen just turns a greenish brown color. And i know its not the audio video cables because i bought replacements and the problem remained the same. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks!
I dearly love my N64, but am having an issue with the screen alignment. As in where the edge of the game screen should match the edge of the tv, is actually a couple of inches inwards and then wraps to the other side... Any recommendations on what I should do?
@DarkestSim I don't have understand the question. You mean you turn on the console and the red light remains dead, but the console still runs normally and you can play? Or the console is dead too? If it's just the light, maybe change it, it's like a little led. You can customize it with other colors, but you must have experience in electronic to do this, me self i think i would not able to do it. If both light and console doesen't turn on, the quickest way is to buy a new one, it's cheaper.
Ok I have a problem&need help asap.. My console works perfectly, (can see&play games) but no audio!! The cords seem good condition.. Idk what's wrong. Would you? I'm trying to play Zelda here & no audio (yes tried other games)
@CrystalDrew First i would try to change the scart cable and buy a new one, maybe the problem is there. If also with a new cable the probelm is still there, then there is a damage inside the console, and i don't think you can easily fix it. If you have a super nintento you can use the cable, it is the same, or also the gamecube scart! Try this first, if it does not work, buy a new used console, 15-20 euros you can find it in internet. I never had any problem with my n64, it's immortal :D
Well I got my gamebits from ebay now. Opened the console and cleaned just about all of it. Only problem is I can't seem to find a affective way to clean the cartridge contacts/pins. I tried a q-tip/paper towel and some rubbing alchohol but the grime at the bottom is too great. Also how would I get inside the contacts so I can clean them. Does the contact thing come apart?
@djkub1 If some grime remains in the bottom there should not be any problems with the games, i think the console works great even if it is not 100% cleaned. If you removed the dirt or dust from the contacts pins then i think you are ok, the most is done! I'm not sure if the thing comes apart, i have not my n64 here yet to control. Bye ;)
@illogitech I replaced my power LED with a blue one today. But yesterday when moving some parts I happend to lose one of the springs on the plastic grey shutters :( . Do you happen to know anything maybe around the house that I could use on that one flap piece?
I also managed to crack the bottom part of the n64 case because I was too rough when cleaning it :(. But it still seems strong.
@djkub1 Oh man, you must be careful while disassembling something. If the N64 works great without the piece you lost then it's ok, i don't understand exactly which piece you lost so i can't help you to replace it. Are you Hercules that you broke the bottom of the case? lol :D Fortunately the N64 is a strong machine ;) Bye!
illogitech is being stupid, grime can cause a lot of problems. Just cut a piece of a cereal box the same size as a cartridge. Next dampen it with rubbing alcohol or electronics cleaner and stick it in an out a few times. After that give it about 15 mins to dry.
Also it could be your ic chip if the games don't boot. Unlikely but if that is the case you need a new console or motherboard.
@MrConsumerWhore1 Thanks but I found a way since then. I took an old gift card, and wrapped a alchohol dampened coffee filter on the corner and used that to get the grime and all the crap out. My N64 now works perfectly, don't even have to blow in any cartridges or anything (I cleaned those too).
i just got the old 64 out of a box & was gonna give quake & perfect dark a go, plugged her in, turned power on & im not getting any power to the console, (no red light,) any ideas what i can try ?
@jquint67 mhm maybe the ac adapter is broken and gives not energy to the console. The bad thing is that you can't buy a universal ac adapter because the n64 uses a specific one, not as the snes fo example. So you only have the possibility to buy a new original ac adapter or buy a new n64 complete... you'll find them for cheap. If you have a friend that has a n64, ask him if he can give you his n64 to try what's wrong with yours.
Am I the only person who noticed him saying he didn't want to break the warrenty label on the expansion pack? Hahahah, check your calender dude, I don't think that "warrenty" means much over 10 years after N64s stopped being made :)
@djkub1 I said this because i don't want to break it for personal reasons, not for the warranty, lol! Maybe i explained bad, but when i open old consoles or computers, i try to don't broke original seals and warranty because i want keep them as they are, when possible. With the N64 it's possible to do it, but it's just a personal idea, you are free to broke it! Clear now? :D
@illogitech Oh ya I understand now. Now that I think of it I wouldn't want to damage the warrenty seal either in that case.
Thanks for the great tutorial BTW. I was planning to restore my old N64 console and I was looking for some videos on what I should do. My only problem is that I don't have a gamebit yet so I can't remove the gamebit screws. I would love to try that melting pen method but I don't want to risk damaging the console any farther.
@djkub1 The gamebit you can easy find in ebay for cheap, i payed 5$ shipped in italy from california! And took 14 days. The melting pen method is not easy to do... 5$ and you are done ;)
@djkub1 Ya I done tried that pen thing with a couple pens and a mechanical pencil. It was hard to do. Didn't work. I will start looking around for some gamebits but I can't use ebay because everything is payed through paypal, which is my worst enemy.
@illogitech how do you fix your nintendo if it wond read games i think the nintendo i have wont read games anymore it might play one or two games but if i put diffrent one in it it wont play them
@illogitech Hey can you do this with N64 cartridges? or show us how to insert a new save battery for different types of cartridges. I refuse to let my N64 games die. N64 is my favorite console...
@StaticMammon Yes i can open all games carts, nes to n64 and also Sega. I have a video if you go in my page and search. But changing the battery is difficult and i don't suggest to do it. Buy a new game instead... because even if you change the battery you loose the savegame. cya!
@againesful I think it is possible! If you have both just try ;) inside the structure is the same, so if you only change the chassis i think there are no problems ;)
i can play mine just o you know how to fix the power cords and stuff cause u have to mess with the cords for an hour to play for 10 minutes...so do you know how to fix them?
i got my nintendo 64 broken i check everything of what happende to it and everything is fine the ac adapter is okay i can see but i cant play and load games.
@illogitech no,no,no the controler is fine but the console got broke i check the back of it and it has a hole is like it got overheated when my uncle play the game.
@zaswerty Be sure to check out the right video source on your tv, and check the avcable for damages, try to use for example the snes or gamecube, it's the same.
@Marioiswicked Maybe the AC adapter is nearly dead. Try to change it. Or try open the console and clean it from the dust, maybe cause of the dust it becames more hot inside and then there is a reset of the console preventig damages.
@illogitech mabye, ill have to take a weekend and rip it apart and see whats up, ive been told that it could be my expansion pack, do you think that might be the problem?
@CountSaleh lol sorry, be careful and use the lower player tray, it's better. it is just a simple way to go to my page and see other videos about consoles. don't hate me :(
@kasm279 Yes, i use the specific one made for those screws. But inside the console, there are normal screws. You need the special tool just to open the N64 then you can use the driver you want.
@illogitech Its funny, i got my N64 (Jungle Green), which promted me to replace the battery in Pokemon Crystal (because i got Pokemon Stadium 2 and the Transfer Pak), which then made me replace the dead speaker in my Game Boy Color with one from a PSP :D
hey i did this yesterday lol there was a lot of dust ! i clean it but i took out this cartridge thing just like at 8:25 and each time i put a game it gets really stuck there the game it works good it does not freeze that much but its a problem please help:(
Maybe you have mount it in the wrong way, try to open the console again and adjust better. When disassembling something, alway be careful how you remove things.
Question: since my N64 has a broken face plate, can I buy one off eBay, or do I need to get the system itself? This is a very nice tutorial. Right now, I'm about to fix my game collection (12 of the 13), and I might add more to my collection.
IT depends how you want to paint it...toally,outside and inside or only outside?if only outside, you can make it without open it, just cover the part you don't want to paint with scoth for example and thats all! but if you want a professional job than is better open it, remove all the part as start and reset button and paint only the case that left. :)
im going to rgb mod my n64 and i purchased a 4.5mm gamebit. the description said i can open snes,n64 and gamecube ones, but u use a 4.2, is mine too big? or should i use the strength of the hulk himself to fuckin screw up the damn bits?
I think 4.2 mm is the size of the screws because i couldn't screw up them with just the bare hands. so i used a wrench and it worked perfectly :)
bought a n64 that was already JP/US modded so the guy who was before me who was modding it must have screwed the bits back as hard as fuck, RGB mod here i come, have one of the earliest japanese n64 :)
I used pliers to unscrew the front ones, but i can't get any of the back ones, and i'm too muck of a cheap bastard to buy it off ebay lol. is there another way?
The bottom slot was there for external addons like the never released 2mb magnetic disc, cd drive (never produced and dev had issues), and a hard drive but developers didn't like and would have been very pricey.
@Zeroapostle4ever12 The system warranty is a year, not unlimited. That would be sweet, though. An unlimited warranty. I could really use that for my TV set.
@meyer2911 It isn't, I already opened it, but it seems that its restarting because of an overheat in some of its parts, maybe it restarts (over and over in a row) is due to a mechanism of defence from the heat

@djkub1 Oh man, you must be careful while disassembling something. If the N64 works great without the piece you lost then it's ok, i don't understand exactly which piece you lost so i can't help you to replace it. Are you Hercules that you broke the bottom of the case? lol :D Fortunately the N64 is a strong machine ;) Bye!
illogitech 11 months ago
@djkub1
illogitech is being stupid, grime can cause a lot of problems.
MrConsumerWhore1 9 months ago
@MrConsumerWhore1 Thanks but I found a way since then. I took an old gift card, and wrapped a alchohol dampened coffee filter on the corner and used that to get the grime and all the crap out. My N64 now works perfectly, don't even have to blow in any cartridges or anything (I cleaned those too).
djkub1 9 months ago
Wow thats awesome but the problem is there are so many screws. must be worst trying to put it back together lol.
BloodyAlchemist1 11 months ago
i just got the old 64 out of a box & was gonna give quake & perfect dark a go, plugged her in, turned power on & im not getting any power to the console, (no red light,) any ideas what i can try ?
jquint67 11 months ago
@jquint67 mhm maybe the ac adapter is broken and gives not energy to the console. The bad thing is that you can't buy a universal ac adapter because the n64 uses a specific one, not as the snes fo example. So you only have the possibility to buy a new original ac adapter or buy a new n64 complete... you'll find them for cheap. If you have a friend that has a n64, ask him if he can give you his n64 to try what's wrong with yours.
illogitech 11 months ago
Am I the only person who noticed him saying he didn't want to break the warrenty label on the expansion pack? Hahahah, check your calender dude, I don't think that "warrenty" means much over 10 years after N64s stopped being made :)
djkub1 11 months ago
@djkub1 I said this because i don't want to break it for personal reasons, not for the warranty, lol! Maybe i explained bad, but when i open old consoles or computers, i try to don't broke original seals and warranty because i want keep them as they are, when possible. With the N64 it's possible to do it, but it's just a personal idea, you are free to broke it! Clear now? :D
illogitech 11 months ago
@illogitech Oh ya I understand now. Now that I think of it I wouldn't want to damage the warrenty seal either in that case.
Thanks for the great tutorial BTW. I was planning to restore my old N64 console and I was looking for some videos on what I should do. My only problem is that I don't have a gamebit yet so I can't remove the gamebit screws. I would love to try that melting pen method but I don't want to risk damaging the console any farther.
djkub1 11 months ago
@djkub1 The gamebit you can easy find in ebay for cheap, i payed 5$ shipped in italy from california! And took 14 days. The melting pen method is not easy to do... 5$ and you are done ;)
illogitech 11 months ago
@djkub1 Ya I done tried that pen thing with a couple pens and a mechanical pencil. It was hard to do. Didn't work. I will start looking around for some gamebits but I can't use ebay because everything is payed through paypal, which is my worst enemy.

@illogitech how do you fix your nintendo if it wond read games i think the nintendo i have wont read games anymore it might play one or two games but if i put diffrent one in it it wont play them
SpeedDeamon95 1 year ago
@SpeedDeamon95 if your n64 read some games and others doesen't, i think it's more a problem of the games. Try to clean the cartdriges!
illogitech 1 year ago
@illogitech Hey can you do this with N64 cartridges? or show us how to insert a new save battery for different types of cartridges. I refuse to let my N64 games die. N64 is my favorite console...
StaticMammon 1 year ago
@StaticMammon Yes i can open all games carts, nes to n64 and also Sega. I have a video if you go in my page and search. But changing the battery is difficult and i don't suggest to do it. Buy a new game instead... because even if you change the battery you loose the savegame. cya!

Can I switch U.S. N64 in-parts into a Japan N64 System? Japan has some cool N64 skin colors I want.
againesful 1 year ago
@againesful I think it is possible! If you have both just try ;) inside the structure is the same, so if you only change the chassis i think there are no problems ;)

@zaswerty Be sure to check out the right video source on your tv, and check the avcable for damages, try to use for example the snes or gamecube, it's the same.

hey man my n64 resets it self after like 20 mins of play for no reason got any ideas?
Marioiswicked 1 year ago
@Marioiswicked Maybe the AC adapter is nearly dead. Try to change it. Or try open the console and clean it from the dust, maybe cause of the dust it becames more hot inside and then there is a reset of the console preventig damages.
illogitech 1 year ago
@illogitech mabye, ill have to take a weekend and rip it apart and see whats up, ive been told that it could be my expansion pack, do you think that might be the problem?
Marioiswicked 1 year ago
they had to make the opening screw some weird complicated 4.5 thing retarded nintendo people... why can't it be some simple screw driver?!?!

ok, what screwdriver did you use? is it the one thats actually made for those screws or what?
kasm279 1 year ago
@kasm279 Yes, i use the specific one made for those screws. But inside the console, there are normal screws. You need the special tool just to open the N64 then you can use the driver you want.
illogitech 1 year ago
well, do you know what size batteries go into the n64 games?
spartan36789 1 year ago
@spartan36789 I'm not sure 100% but i think you ned this type:
BR2032
It's the same of the SNES games batteries.
illogitech 1 year ago
@illogitech and in the off chance that you need a GBC battery (like i did for my Pokemon Crystal game) it uses A CR2025 :D
kasm279 1 year ago
@kasm279 right :)

95tTony 1 year ago
Maybe you have mount it in the wrong way, try to open the console again and adjust better. When disassembling something, alway be careful how you remove things.
illogitech 1 year ago
you can actually use a bic pen to open it but you need to remove the ink cartidge
MrSampsp 1 year ago
Yes, use the bic and press hardly to the screw, so it takes the form.

Question: since my N64 has a broken face plate, can I buy one off eBay, or do I need to get the system itself? This is a very nice tutorial. Right now, I'm about to fix my game collection (12 of the 13), and I might add more to my collection.

If i wanted to paint my 64 how would i do that? Would i have to open it like you did?
XandeRToXic 2 years ago
IT depends how you want to paint it...toally,outside and inside or only outside?if only outside, you can make it without open it, just cover the part you don't want to paint with scoth for example and thats all! but if you want a professional job than is better open it, remove all the part as start and reset button and paint only the case that left. :)

Thanks so much for the advice and fast response!

im going to rgb mod my n64 and i purchased a 4.5mm gamebit. the description said i can open snes,n64 and gamecube ones, but u use a 4.2, is mine too big? or should i use the strength of the hulk himself to fuckin screw up the damn bits?
Jompe94 2 years ago
Why did you buy a 4.5mm bit? That works not for Nintendo systems but for Sega systems...
You need the 4.2mm or you'll broke the screws or something while working on the n64.
But maybe that tool is a new ones and it works,i don't know...did you try?
illogitech 2 years ago
I think 4.2 mm is the size of the screws because i couldn't screw up them with just the bare hands. so i used a wrench and it worked perfectly :)
bought a n64 that was already JP/US modded so the guy who was before me who was modding it must have screwed the bits back as hard as fuck, RGB mod here i come, have one of the earliest japanese n64 :)
Jompe94 2 years ago
Ok,very nice :) I wish you nice modding...tell me when you do it.
Bye :)

The bottom slot was there for external addons like the never released 2mb magnetic disc, cd drive (never produced and dev had issues), and a hard drive but developers didn't like and would have been very pricey.
illogitech 2 years ago
at the end you void the warranty
Zeroapostle4ever12 2 years ago
@Zeroapostle4ever12 The system warranty is a year, not unlimited. That would be sweet, though. An unlimited warranty. I could really use that for my TV set.
WinVistaUser2 2 years ago
I'm curius, not sure where else to ask.
1. are there any memeror packs that are bigger tham 4mgs?
2. whats that exp slot on the bottom for? Am I missing anything?
3. where can I get the tool you used to unscrew the bottom?

what kinda screw driver do you use to get in the Nintendo 64?
N00Player69 2 years ago
1. Is that an efficient way to clean the inside of the nintendo 64 if it won't play and would it work if I did clean it that way?
2. Does it still play when you put it all back together?
LilDavid1415 2 years ago
Yes, it will still play, the top part is really just a plastic case that covers the bottom that houses the actual working parts.
SgtMustang 2 years ago
You can just blow in it, or use one of the compressed air cans to blow any particles out.
