I was at this game. Did anyone here go to the last game of that season between Chelsea and Watford at Stamford Bridge? The one where Chelsea kid goalie Les Fridge was thrown in the deep end?
I somehow got on the wrong side of a police line and on getting into the ground found myself in the Shed by mistake (I didn't have any Watford colours on). I had to keep quiet and not give myself away as we scored 5 times!
Also forgot to say - check out the respect of the players towards the referee (plaudits to Chelsea players in fairness). See kids - this is how is should be!!
This can't be from September 85 there was no footy on TV until January 86 because of a strike between the league and BBC/ITV, though our national broadcaster (RTE) showed a game between QPR and West Ham during the strike, so maybe it was made for the overseas market
This game is from Sept 85. A lot of games from the early part of the season were filmed and showed overseas. I have a few of the highlights, that were not shown in the UK including the QPR-West Ham
There was a bit of confusion over the year (due to the TV strike) but i was fairly confident that it must have been 1985..after first mistakenly stating it was 87!
@stevohorn The reason it wasn't shown in UK wasn't because of a strike, but because of a dispute between the Football League and the BBC & ITV, particularly over live league games which had been introduced the previous season.
The FL believed that attendances at grounds, which had seen a steady decrease since the early 70's, was soley due to too much football on TV. The FL demaded a payment that the BBC & ITV refused to pay and the out come was that attendences immediately plumeted.
Yes. As stated, many matches were recorded for international audiences at this point without being shown in the UK - ITV did all the coverage, which is why Martin Tyler's commentating here. Such were the circumstances of the dispute, though, that they couldn't even show the goals on Saint and Greavsie.
Great video, but (and I may be wrong) I believe this is earlier than 1987...Colin West was at Rangers by then, ditto Callaghan (at Villa or Derby) - apologies for my Statto-ness! I think this game might be from the 1985/86 season.
I bow to your statto-ness! I got a bit confused because this fixture had the same result two seasons running. But ive noticed that it says 10 games played on the table shown at the end. So this must have been the Sept 85 game. Cheers!

What a peach of a goal from Barnes! Not seen that one before so thanks Stevo. Nice to see Callaghan - hope he gets back to full health very soon.
