  • I hid my first one in a film canister. Good?

  • More great tips. Thanks

  • the only GPS device I have is a TomTom can I use a TomTom to do geocaching. please let me know. thanks.

  • cool video

  • DO YOU HAVE A JOB

  • LOL he made the sun orbit around him

  • @Headhardhat my environment is south is a swamp north is alpine and east and west are desert most of the containers you mentioned won't work out here. in the spring we have rodents in the summer we have fires in the fall we have leaves and in the winter we have snow. so in Idaho the containers have to be heavy plastic or ammo boxes anything else will be destroyed by fire, will get wet, or cracked by the elements.

  • I made my first cache a key chain screw bottle I hope the seal holds

  • i found my first cache today

  • lock n lock boxes are the best

  • Thx a lot for your videos!

  • @medwardI I hid a geocache just like that on April 30, 2011. It's doing pretty well, but I'm not sure about how wet it will get. I'm guessing it will get wet.

  • Today I was at dollar tree they had sandwich sized plastic containers with the flaps that fold down and snap into place I picked one up I just need to test it but if its good a goe cache container for a buck will be pretty neat.

  • I was thinking about maybe using a home fire safe with a number pad combo with the combo being a puzzle or something.

  • its not fair u did the key holder for 3 seconds but the 35mm for 5 ?

  • the part where the package peanuts gets thrown at HHH cracked me up big time

  • You could always use Right in the Rain paper for your logs. I've seen soggy log books in ammo cans because some numbskull put too much swag in it and the lid couldn't seal even though it was shut properly! I use RITR paper for all my logs now. PS It kills me when I see someone say in their description that they used a Tupperware container and it's a cheap Glad container. Tupperware is actually waterproof but I rarely see actual Tupperware used as caches. It's always cheap crappy imitations.

  • HHH, Thanks for the great tips! I always try to make sure my Hides are waterproof,I hate wet logs! :) Also your description of how moisture and temperature can effect your cache is very informative and gives you something to think about when choosing a container. Thanks and keep Caching!

  • really like the special effects

  • @zdragonfly1974 Why thank you.. I we have nothing but the highest grade props around here and use them to their best abilities..

    Thanks for watching.

  • @headhardhat I get the micro containers from caseys. The little pill holder containers.

  • Marshmallows or cottonbalss?

  • @niknik212121 biodegradable peanuts actually :)

  • I hid my first Geocache yesterday =D I used a metal pill container.

  • @wersaswer Way to go!!! Welcome to the obsession and may you hide many more quality hides..

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat a great container it paintball pods there hevy duty plastic and come in all colers shaps and sizes!!!!

  • Geoness is goofing off I like the part where she gets you wet Head Hard Hat

  • @geomodelrailroader In this video Geoness is behind the camera trying not to laugh - unsuccessfully I might add :). Actually it was my wife who was in charge of the prop throwing.

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat lol but it is still funny

  • Thanks for the tips. I actually use a pill bottle for my first geocache, it had a rubber seal.

  • @MacBooker4444 ;That will work depending on the environment it is placed but the rubber seal does help. Thanks for writing in.

  • I found a noodle canister and I have some film tubes I will try both to see what works

  • @geomodelrailroader I never heard of a noodle canister before... Send some photos if you can. Google headhardhat blog to find me. Would appreciate it.

    -HHH

  • thanks for the tip I will look for something that is waterproof any ideas. I know Altoids boxes don't work and film tubes work if the lid is set right. I am trying to find out what will work.

  • @geomodelrailroader If you find the perfect container, let me know. It really depends on the environment you are placing them. One particular one in your area may not work in mine. There is an area near me on the ocean where you can't put ammo boxes because the salt eats them up. You just never know till you try it...

    -HHH

  • @headhardhat found an Ammo Box but I need to think of a name and I need to find an Archived Spot to hide it

  • @headhardhat Finaly found a Box but its big just a coat of paint and it goes in the field the question I have is how to make it invisible because the size will give it away.

  • I would enjoy the snippets, but the background music is annoying. Is it needed while talking?

  • @cheetahkye Yeah over time we have tried different things with GeoSnippits and background music. I think we have worked out the kinks for most but some of our earlier tries have their flaws... :)

  • I beg to differ about the pill bottle. I hid a geocache in a pill bottle on a branch over a creek and it fell in. It was there for at least a day and when I got it out the log was totally dry.

  • @Left734 That must have been some pill bottle. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. For the vast majority of pill bottle finds from my experience in wetter climates they are a mistake and are always water logged.

  • Hay Head hard hat I might use a photo tube and an ammo box for a cache but I see caches that use the wrong container M&M bottles and plastic boxes. I live in Southern Idaho where it rains and snows I seen wet books and tons of reports of broken caches.

  • @UP5314 Yeah, it is extremely important to have the right geocache for the area they are placed. Especially in wet and cold winter areas. Then again here down in NC if you are right near the ocean you don't want to use ammo cans because the salt air eats them alive so experimenting and sticking with what works helps. -HHH

  • what happend with the pill tube

  • The pill bottle leaked as bad as the key holder. They are really just meant to keep pills from getting busted and not to withstand the elements outside. -HHH

  • Cool video! Here in the Puget Sound, everything you dunk tested (and the container failed) always end up with soaked logs, and the Altoids tins rust shut. However, on a trip to Arizona, a tin valentine heart container and a breath strip container (really! It was magnetized to the back of a sign) were perfectly fine. So, yea, environment really does matter!

I'm curious (because these are the best caches in this wet weather), how long can an ammo can and a Lock-and-Lock be dunked?

  • Great questions, the lock and lock can be put on incorrectly and sometimes does leak if not on perfectly is what I found. Ammo cans, as long as they are not dented I have seen them hidden under water as part of the actual hide and they were perfectly dry inside. thanks for asking. -HHH

  • Might want to check your audio mix on this - the music was awful loud and made you hard to understand at times.

  • Also, regarding the "Dunk Test": I've tested geocache containers by giving them a run through the dishwasher.

  • Thanks we realize this now.. I had a stern talking with the editing guy and he will not do this again. Thanks for putting up with the loud music. -HHH

  • aww I was excited for this video but it hardly ever gets wet here

And Ill confirm that in the desert of southern Arizona I have found tons of altoids tins and they work out pretty well

  • hey altoids... i just might try that...

  • Thanks for the tips!

  • You are most welcome and thanks for the, well thanks... -HHH

  • It seems to happen sometimes.

    My packets going nowhere.

It seems now to be fixed and I can watch

    youtube again.

    John

  • Must have been a temporary disconnect between my Mediacom connection and the Google servers. Works now.

Sometimes I wonder where my packets are going. Sometimes when I traceroute to a server, I find that the connection is going in circles due to internet router problems.

  • Intranet or Internet? Interesting if you are loosing packets that extreme. Either desolate places or too mass of population areas. Hope the throughput gets fixed.

  • These videos all cut out for me, I guess my 20 megabit connection is not good enough to watch Youtube!

  • They work fine for me on wimax.

  • Hopefully they will be viewable for everybody. Technology moves so fast now. -HHH

  • Sorry to hear that k0bl, I hope your throughput issues get resolved. We miss not having you join in. -HHH

  • You got me laughing on this one. Let me know and I will be glad to throw water at you....its the snow that busted me up

While in Arizonia it was amazing what I was finding for caches. Even just baggies in some open spots. They all may have gotten wet but then the sun dried them out. I never found one I couldn't sign

Another thing if you want to use anything, use waterproof/writable paper....been seeing that here in NC recently.

Keep it up HHH, they are good videos.

    zuni

  • Thanks you sir and I'm sure you will have plenty of opportunity to throw that water whilst out at an event.. I do find it interesting how the different caching techniques around the country and the world for that matter differs. What is cool and acceptable here is completely taboo in other places and then the opposite somewhere else. All part of the fun... Thanks - HHH

  • Heat is made by the IR radiation and not de UV.

    Thanks for the videos

  • Hiya Hotmarmota, you are indeed correct and when I originally was going to discuss this I wanted to say that UV causes degradation of plastics and IR comes in the form of heat that warps the plastic. I was so into doing the slapstick I muffled it together into a misstatement.. Thanks for pointing it out.. -HHH

  • it also all depends on how well you maintain your cache...

I think your next on should be what not to put in a cache! Bubbles.... batteries...food... etc... (My bad if u've already done this on...)

  • Great suggestion Erika, we are going to be doing a HOW to NOT Do A Geocache video soon. Thanks for writing in.

  • I'm the first to view

  • Thanks for being first and thanks for watching! - HHH
