  • When my angelic work was through

The angels and the Devil too

Would sing my childhood song to me

About the time they called me "Jacky"

If I could be for only an hour

If I could be for an hour every day

If I could be for just one little hour

Cute in a stupid ass way

  • That if one day in paradise I'd sing for all the ladies up there And they would sing along with me And we be so happy there to be Cos' down below is really nowhere My name would then be Junipher Then I would know where I was going And then I would become all knowing My beard so very long and flowing If I became deaf, dumb and blind (was: If I could play deaf, dumb and blind) Because I pitied all mankind And broke my heart to make things right I know that every single night
  • Whisky that came from Twickenham Authentic queers And phony virgins If I had banks on every finger A finger in every country And every country ruled by me I'd still know where I'd want to be Locked up inside my opium den Surrounded by some china men I'd sing the song that I sang then About the time they called me "Jacky" If I could be for only an hour If I could be for an hour every day If I could be for just one little hour Cute in a stupid ass way Now, tell me, wouldn't it be nice
  • Though I'd be drunk as I could be Still I would sing my song to me About the time they called me "Jacky" If I could be for only an hour If I could be for an hour every day If I could be for just one little hour Cute in a stupid ass way And if I joined the social whirl Became procurer of young girls Then i would have my own bordellos My record would be number one And I'd sell records by the ton All sung by many other fellows My name would then be handsome Jack And I'd sell boats of opium
  • And if one day I should become A singer with a Spanish bum Who sings for women of great virtue I'd sing to them with a guitar I borrowed from a coffee bar Well, what you don't know doesn't hurt you My name would be Antonio And all my bridges I would burn And when I gave them some they'd know I'd expect something in return I'd have to get drunk every night And talk about virility With some old grandmother That might be decked out like a christmas tree And though pink elephants I'd see
  • unfortunatley i have lived my life to this song now i dedicate my working life to this

  • I'm straight, and I listen to this.... I'm four(teen), and I listen to thi....

Okay, nevermind. Seriously though, this guy has a knack of taking ancient songs everyone's forgotten about and bringing them bang up to date. And unlike so many other lukewarm cover versions (Glee, anyone?) he actually does them justice. His own take on these songs seems to add something extra. The man's a genius, no question about it.

  • This man is talented, although i much prefer Scott walkers version. If UglyGeezer is correct, i do not understand what sexuality someone is, has anything to do with talent.

  • Bag o shite

  • fuck, i prefer Jacques brel !

  • I think Brel would have approved

  • @255ping

Of course it's O.K. to sing other people's songs.Did you expect singers such as

Frank Sinatra to write their own songs,or only sing songs that had never been

sung by anyone else? Of course you wouldn't.

  • No one can perform Brel like Brel, but I like this cover because - in spite of all what is lost through the unavoidable filter of translation, especially slang, idioms, and of course provocations, which are the salt of any Brel songs - this intelligent interpretation respects at least the original disillusion, self-derision, and also humor, spirit of this Brel song.

  • Why all the praise for this? It's just pretty much a copy of Scott Walker's (far superior) rendition.

  • @egrorian1 if you don't like blatant copies, check out jack lukeman's version if you haven't already-he does brel better than walker and, even more so,he does hallelujah better,in my opinion, than buckley, and the original, leonard cohen

  • @egrorian1 It's just that people haven't heard the Scott Walker version. I just looked it up becuse of your comment and I see what you mean... I had been attributing Marc Almond with a brilliant adaptation of a French "classic" but seems it was Scott Walker who had the brilliance not Marc Almond just Scott Walker was further back in the past and so forgotten about. Happens all the time. Original is forgotten about. Copy gets credited with creation of song they didn't create.

  • I would like to kill this cover with a hammer.

  • amazing 4ever

  • A genius

  • While one of my very favorites (I loved Marc Almond and Soft Cell both!) it is a shame that the video sucks - the song has such rich imagery in it, and yet he eschewed all of that for this black, kind of improptu stance. I wish he would have given the song more visual acuity in the video and let it flow into a fabulous production number - hell, he's gay - but as a gay man he should be embarrassed by this conservative video.

  • Some birds in this video eh?. A very good version of the song

  • A true showman!

  • THE first album ( cd ) i bought . B.L.O.O.D.Y. brill

  • Brel could just never be "Cute in a stupid ass way", when Marc has been this way all his life, thats why this song suits him so well :)

  • This video cannot be played on mobile. Why not, Youtube? WHY NOT?

  • Great version of one of the greatest - so 80's. Can't beat Brel, though.

  • Holy over-produced heck! I love J. Brel, I love MA, but the combination is so very, er very! (or please tell me this was just the 80's :D)

  • I always liked Marc for that..he isn't always quite in tune..but somehow he sounds great

  • marc almond can't carry a tune.

    Great production though.

  • This is fabulous..a great re-working of a classic

  • This is shite..... come back the original

  • Epic!!

  • I liked Soft Cell, but no way does this beat Scott Walker's version.

  • @erfer666 I liked Scott Walker, but no way did his version beat Jacques Brel's.

  • @Seamaster73

Brel is like a stone wall that some people cannot get beyond. Well let them stay walled in :)

  • @Seamaster73 Don't think I've ever heard Brels version. Gonna have to check it out!

  • It cant be better thans this...

  • Some Birds In This eh? X

  • Remember when you could watch a video without having to sit through a commercial?

Remember when music videos were uploaded by users and not VEVO

Remember when all the info was to the right of the video?

Remember you could rate a video 1-5 stars?

Remember the famous yellow subscribe button?

Remember when the users controlled the site and now corporations?

    WE MISS THE OLD YOUTUBE!

Post this in every video and lets start a youtube revolution!

Thumbs up to keep at top

  • Marc may be gay, but even us straight women think he's awesome. I don't see gay, i see awesome. Great singer, great presence and a brilliant story teller!!!!

  • if drinking cum keeps you looking young like this when ya 50 yrs old....passs me the cock im thirsty....lol....

  • Cute. In a stupid assed way :)

  • The only reason anybody can hate him for being gay is that he's still surrounded by more hot chicks than most straight guys can get...LOL!!!

I bought "The Stars We Are" in '88 when it came out and never get tired of it.

  • This man should be heralded, one of greatest artists of modern times. tarnished by a homophobic media :(

  • don't forget the Trevor Horn production!!

  • Anyone know if his cover of A Salty Dog by Procul Harum is online anywhere?

Love this cover. So dramatic. What a torch-singer he is.

  • he is the greatest singer ever

  • great video! :o)

  • Scott Walker sings this in tune!

  • Pretty good! But I prefer Scott Walkers rendition. Actually, it's Brels very own, but I don't think he ever sang it in English....did he?? My French isn't good enough to understand the lyrics (and appreciate them.)

  • just fabulous!!

  • saw him live in gateshead i still cant believe hes nearly as old as me just fantastic to see

  • I love the way Marc Almond lives his songs.

  • Fantastic version of the classic. I love the fact that it was made more danceable, but with plenty of respect (and, in my opinion, improvement) over the original. Love the video also - some great poses by Mr Almond.

  • Love Marc Almond!! such a talented man.

  • me and the wife gonna see him on 15-11-10,we cant wait, awesome.

  • scott walker is amazing ... but u have to love marc's version

  • Still in my life 29 years later, going to see him later in November, can't wait

  • Marc´s music and personality meant a world to me when I was growing up. Listening to him now makes me feel so warm, like coming home. Makes me laugh too, he always had a great sense of humour.

  • He's just marvellous... I love him!

  • awesome tune marc at his best

  • I spell my name like this so its kind of cool its like its dedicated to me but this song REALLY SUCKS!!!

  • i LOVE YOU

  • Marc Almond grew on me during the 80s and his voice got better and better, with, I think, some training..he often used to sing slightly sharp in earlier recordings.

If you've not heard it, his version of "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," with Jools Holland is totally stonking!

@natesot..spot on mate..homophobia is a big yawn, get over it and deal with the music!

  • a rare occassion when the cover version is better than the original i think...outstanding production from the great trevor horn of course

  • this is a brilliant version!

  • Must admit, though I've never been a huge Almond fan, this is class. :-)

  • i am hetero, i love marc he is a god

  • To YourScientology: I registered to youTube to say just this: Go back to your Slayer or Metallica or Britney Effing Spears or whatever. If you don't have the juice to listen, then at least have the juice to fucking leave...

  • Marc Almond works wonderfully!

  • One of Marcs best solo songs!

  • Nice to see PeeWee Herman at the top again!

  • Would anyone be willing to send me this song in mp3 form? I've tried to buy it on Amazon but it's not available for download, and I'm dying to have it on my computer! :]

  • Marc really does define the word Unique. The older he gets the more so he becomes.

  • This is quite good, considering his age now....his voice is still the same...brilliant!!!

  • @Madgeick it's from 1991. However he's still looking and sounding great.

  • this does nt sound at all like a brel song .

  • Classic, wonderful, unparalleled!

But "New Romantic?" Errrr...maybe they were just looking at his suit or something.

  • Great voice, great performance! WTF should I - or you! - care who he sleeps with??? Enjoy the performance - and get a life of your own.

  • wonderful !!!!!!!!!

  • Oh. My.God. What a phenomenal song! I forget how killer this song was, and just how amazing Marc Almond really was. No, IS!

  • awesome !!

  • oct 91 in UK

  • SPECTACULAR!

I used to hate him but that was when I was an idiot!

HE IS A TRUE ICON AND TALENT.

Anyone who bashes him is afraid of themselves!

    GET INTO HIM!

  • he has a fantastic voice

  • this is superb. i never thought anyone would ever come close to scott walker on this song. i was wrong!

  • As a 100 per cent hetero guy.... still love you Marc.... you have provided me with the soundtrack of my life!

  • @delboy240768 am really broud of you that you are 100% hetro guy.. would you get over your self

  • marc puts more "omph!" into this, than he did in the original - keep going marc, you just get better.

  • brilliant brilliant brilliant

  • great song

  • Is Marc Almond a geigher? If he is I want him for my kitchen!!!

  • I agree with the Frog (can`t believe I just said that), although I like the cover to

  • The original version is in French from Jacques Brel... much better I dare say.

  • I cant not watch this it is wonderful. On my hols last year all I listened to was Marc and it made my holiday and all the bits I remember has a song to go to by him, Montepulciano is now Marc Almond!!! He is wonderful and such a talented vocalist and he should be up there with the greats. Thank You Mark for all these years of your great recordings and many more I hope to come. Love You.

  • ich heiße jacky wow

  • Superb! Is this on an Almond album?

  • yes it is . the album is called tenement symphony and was produced by trevor horn in the alte eighties or very early nineties

  • Thank you very much!

  • @clearviewmind

    Tenement Symphony

  • Marc is so so talented - there is a reason his career has spanned so many decades - the reason is talent.

  • Don't you just love how playful he is in this video :)

  • This song and Marc Almond's version are both exhilarating.

  • genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow!!!!!!!! how much passion! I love marc so much, he always put his whole soul in every song.

  • This is AWESOME. It's hard to live up to Scott Walker and Jacques Brel, but this track is SMOKIN' HOT.

  • Marc Almond is Scott Walker's voice and balls reincarnated (that's a mega-compliment!)

  • to anyone that in 2009 sees this and only sees a gay man singing and cant get past the singers personal life in 2009, your retarded and just needs to go and lock your self in a closit. Marc is an amazing talent and your just not smart enough to see that because your to busie wondering whos been in his bed.

  • @natesot very true. I think this song is absolute gold.

  • @natesot Forget about him being gay becaue he is as human as us all!

  • @natesot AMEN to that. Just as people have their head so far up thier asses that they can't see the US government isn't the creator of freedom, but the worst terrorist organization on earth. Marc is a legend.

  • @natesot wait... he's gay? i never knew that....i still respect him

  • @MultiGilligan

As far as I know, he's gay. Does it matter?

  • @raizo555 no, no it doesn't. I still love him

  • @raizo555

I'm a straight man and to me the man is a legend

  • @natesot ... i agree, but it might be nice if you took the time to re-read what you've typed, as not to make people with this sort of positive perspective look like uneducated fools.

  • @natesot I was born in 1994 and adore this man.

  • @natesot I've been a fan of MA for ages. Much underated as a quality singer. If only people would listed thro' their own prejudices he would could be on the world stage.

  • @natesot

Is it really talent to do other people's songs.

He is a good showman but that's about it and I believe he knows it.

Hell, Tainted love from Softcell was another cover From Gloria Jones back in 1965:

    watch?v=NSehtaY6k1U.

Jacky was originally from, Jacques Brel's - Jacky

    watch?v=3_CxgkokXtY

But I think Marc's Jacky sounds like Scott Walkers Jackie

    watch?v=_dfqtyL_9-4

  • he is so hot! goood song

  • Brilliant !!

  • brel est un tres chanteur marc est vraiment tres bon aussi

  • ok he is queer but you have to admit

it is a great song. his take on it i think is

    fantastic.

its a real (feel good) song.

  • 'Okay he is queer?' What neanderthal planet do you live on??!!! I suppose we should gain succour from the fact that you like it! There's hope yet I suppose (!)

  • good on ya! well said

  • Well doesn't queer mean gay? Last time I checked gay=queer.

  • good song

  • I adore Jacque Brel ! He`s almost untouchable. But Somehow I really do like Marc Almonds attempt to popularise it for an even bigger public....One should ofcourse not begin to compare it with Brel`s version...

  • You really need an ear specialist - are there any in Penzance?:)

  • What can of dick head are you (I'm using the same kind of language you do, you don't mind..?) to not feel the energy of this cover? It's one of the best version, apart Brel itself of course.

  • Temper Temper Ralpius!! my what an angry troglodyte you are!!

  • this was a cover song. i liked it.

  • j'adore cette chanson excellente reprise je me souviens quand c'est sorti en 1991 j'avais 9 ans

  • qyelle merde pauvre jacqhes brel le tuer une 2 foi

  • i saw marc almond in 2000 at sheffield,he was a "warm up" act for cher, who in my opinion was totally over-the-top with acrobats, jugglers, etc, and too many pointless costume changes, marc was just a "man with a microphone",his voice was terrific,i felt after his fabulous performance, cher was an over-blown dissapointment,as a singer myself,i admire a good performer, and i sing the scott walker version of this song, but still enjoy seeing the drama marc almond or scott walker put into every word of it

  • Love you Marc!

  • he is special

  • another GREAT song.with a great performance from marc almond just love this T.Y.FOR POSTING.....

  • marc is a bloody humongous star.....whatever he sings,,,,, tho he doesnt sing enough.... marc xxx

  • spanish bum?

  • Jacques Brel .....

  • Marc is just so fabulous! And beautiful.

  • wow! been a while since I heard this. Kinda makes me think this is what would happen if Lou Diamond Phillips spent more time in W Hollywood.

  • Fantastic!!!!

  • Does not matter what opinions you have but marc sings this great it is so different from the others more dramatic and with more expression. I have heard the others sing this and this is far more better. I love Mark and everything he does is so proffessional and he is a great show man full of emotion and drama.

  • Indeed, yorkmead: Marc is not just a great showman but a lovely human being. X

  • STICK YOUR GAY COMMENTS UP YOUR ARSE

  • ...and you can stick your fist up your ARSE

  • Eric Blau and Mort Shuman translated and transcribed the lyrics of many Brel songs in the1960s for the theatrical revue 'Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris', performed in NYC and then continuously since all over the world. Whoever Scott Walker is, he certainly did not 're-write the lyrics in english' nor is he responsible for, 'changing some lines'. The lyrics Marc Almond sings here are the exact same lyrics - every line- Blau and Shuman adapted from Jacques Brel.

  • I think this is the first time I've ever seen Marc Almond smile.

  • This is great--but Momus' cover ("Nicky") is also pretty amazing in a different way, along with his other Brel covers (Don't Leave and See a Friend in Tears).

  • Haha, if your going to make such a claim, at least make sure you're right before doing so lol. The writer of this song is Jacques Brel. Hence the line 'about the time they called me Jacky' cos thats what he was called in France as a boy. Scott Walker re-wrote it in english, changing some lines granted, but it certainly isnt his song. I like Walker's version but prefer Marc Almond's. More passion for me, more dramatic. That being said they are both good covers of a great great song.

    Ells

    1

  • Jacques Brel came from Belgium, actually, and was brought up a Flemish speaker. Pedantic, aren't I?

  • Wow! That song is sheer power !!!!

  • debate- this version or scott walker's or prob good in their own way.....

  • This is a fine version but it doesn't really improve on Scott's. Jacques Brel's version (the original) has its own great merit as well.

  • absolutely fabulous. He is excellent

  • No...we Dont have to settle, for anything.

  • Studio recording or a Live performance ,Marc sounds good on both levels.I was going out with the a really beautiful woman and we loved to listen to Marc Almond's music!!!

  • a great artist ,marc is so talented , its 2009 and we have to settle for britney and ciara humping the stage and shoving their ass in the camera ??!!!

    thank god for youtube

  • used to know marc really well!! a classic song

  • i love jacques brel

  • AMAZING !

    BRILLAINT !

    FANTASTIC !

    The music !

    The song !

    & of course Marc Almond

  • To me he really is the incarnation of everything I like about Brits - and of course, he is a star! Who cares for mainstream opinions?

  • love it love it love it !

  • Blokes got a great set of pipes Sad that hes never really been acknowledged as one of the UK's greatest live vocalists.

  • I agree totally.

There is a lot of garbage out there that like to think they are singers and are acknowledged as great singers, which they are far from.

Marc is brillaint at what ever songs he does, yet music fans of today are not aware what a good singer is.
