@maxm2317 Snow depends on elevation. was just up there last week and snow still deep at Norden but roads are dry. upper elevations are still snowed in until late July (above track levels). all snow gone at Truckee.
@ThomasRivette I used a 2 yr old Panasonic HDC-SD1 AVCHD 3CCD High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and Flash Memory. Then imported into iMovie on my Mac and then shared on youtube. camera still available on Amazon.
@ThomasRivette Actually Donner Pass on this day was not cold at all. pretty much spring. as we progressed down the hill it got warm. Tee shirt weather. that is California. The Feather River trip was colder due to rain storm.
"Give us a whistle baby!!!"... "Comeon, give us a toot!!"-- LoL, loved your background comments, and THEN a horn from one of the Heritage diesels and a big ole whistle from the 844!!!... that was AWESOME-- my favorite part of the video!! But, a fantastic compilation of shots all across Donner... really beautiful and you did a great job-- especially considering the masses of people everywhere!! I really loved this!!
"Give us a whistle baby!"...."Comeon, give us a toot!!"... LoL, loved your background comments-- THEN got a horn from one of the Herritage diesels AND a whistle from 844!! That was just awesome-- my favorite part of the video!! However-- a fantastic compilation of shots all across Donner!! Great job, I really loved this!!!
This is the best video of the Donner Trip. On a side not... did you happen to see a gorgeous blonde in a white land rover anywhere in your trips? I was piloting the 844's engineer and this blonde was always on the engineer's side and I have been looking through photos and videos ever since last friday for her.
thanks for complement. I was so focused on 844 that didn't notice anyone person nearby. from the sound of it, wish I had...sigh...oh well. back to longlasting beauty of 844.
pardon my ignorance, the diesel compliment, are they for insurance in case of breakdowns, or assistants in pushing over Donner. I also notice on UP3985 they always have a diesel hooked up behind....same reason?? Thanks for the upload
Is there always snow up there? I have had that question on my mind for a few years now. Can you please explain?
Max, out!

This really symbolizes the takeover of the Southern Pacific by Union Pacific....when UP steam engines run on the former SP.

I'd be intrigued to know why the engineer decided to take off from Colfax with about 20% cut-off. No wonder he struggled a bit! :)

Is that first diesel a Southern Pacific or Union Pacific?

same reason. other reason for diesel is for braking down the hills.
