The take them cause supertankers are run by minimal possible crews who aren't getting paid enough to risk their lives. Then once they've got them they hold the ship itself to ransom, cheaper for the company to pay up than to have the ship scuttled.

The reason they can get aboard is that they are heavily armed with ak47s and rocket propelled grenades against civilian crewmen with fire hoses.
They don't try to 'steal' the tanker or the oil. In a best case scenario, they take the crew's mobile phones and laptops, and any equipment not bolted down, and leave.
Worst case they hold the crew hostage and demand ransom, or just kill them to make the looting easier.

No, they pull alongside and use grapple-hooks and primitive home-made ladders to get onboard much larger vessels. Yes, they have automatic weaponry and RPG's. They HAVE taken oil, and in a "best case scenario" the merchant-vessel they board will have a safe full of wage-money in the holds. Why write things down when you dont know that its true. And this guys a prick- "i love that pirates are back!"- tell that to the people they shoot, or the couple that had their throats cut on a yacht.
