I actually find that if you tie your obi too tight then after a few hours of training or even after an intense training session it may begin to ride up on you
guess there is different ways of doing this , My black belts take the rear strap and go down through the obi then up to front , keeps it nice and snug , we are a traditional JU Jutsu Ryu,Kenpo based with Iai
There are numerous ways to tie an Iai Obi, this is just the method I find most comfortable for me. As long as the Obi is tight enough to hold a sword in position, and the knot is placed in such a position so as to not restrict Saya-biki then any method is OK. There are a lot of people out there that talk bollocks about the "right" and "wrong" way of tying an obi... as long as the above holds true then what ever method you use is fine.
Yeah, the butterfly knot at the front is more formal, most Kendoka just tie a reef knot and tuck the remaining himo around the sides of the waistband, also then there isn't such a lump under the Tare, should you be caught a bit low by your opponent!
It shouldn't make any difference what Obi you have, I just find that the one I have to be more comfortable and being that bit wider it will support the saya better.
If you pull you Obi very tight to begin with, you will find that after a few Kata it will feel far looser. The secret i found was to over -tighten the Obi at the out-set and then it seems to work OK.
Looks good... but black gi, black hakama and no narrative. Not that helpful, show me some contrast

Quick Question..
Behind the Hakama, there is this small white plate...
What is this part actually for?? What happens if you dont use it?
YokaiTetsuiga 3 years ago
The idea of that is that it is inserted down between the Iai-Gi and the Obi, and it stops the back from sliding down.

ic ic....thanks for the reply...just another question if you dont mind..
My teachers and seniors have told me that this way of tying a Hakama is for those students learning iado, and iato, but not for Kendo....
Do you think this is true??

Does it matter what type of obi you are using?( mine is a cotton type btw).
when I am putting mine on it doesn't get as tight as yours appears to be.
