The unfortunate part of this travesty is that they are being removed from lands set aside for them by the ROAM act in 1971. A senator in Montana slipped a rider in a bill taking their lands away from them in a bill passed before a holiday session.

What a tragety! These horses seem to be in perfect health, have plenty of grazing pasture, and substantial water supply. There is no overpopulation, if overpopulation was the case once again there would not be enough food and water. There is right for BLM to take these horses away from their home! And especially such a well publicized herd such as this one!

barehorsetraining-Do you own horses? If you do, did they all grow up together? Have you bought horses? How did they handle being pulled away from their "family" and all that they know?

I'll agree that horses do form bonds between eachother, I've noticed it with my family's horses. But, to say they won't adjust is another thing.

What exactly do you know about "wild" horses then? Are you a biologist that can make educated decisions like people working for the BLM? I trust that they are making the best decision for the herd and the land they are grazing on, as well as for the other wildlife they compete with in the Pryor Mountains.

You'd be surprised as to how well rodeo horses and other animals are actually taken care of.

No, as a matter of fact, I don't follow the Pryor Mountain horses around. I work full-time to support my family, therefore I don't have the time. I do however have the time to trust my government (BLM in this case) is doing the right thing for these horses. Also, growing up in the country and with lots of animals, I've got an ag-based idea how many animals can successfully live on the land (given grass availability and such).

Do you follow the Pryor Mountain horses or other wild horses? This is not about the behavior of the horses either, in case you didn't notice. The culling of the herd is about keeping the herd healthy and the land they live on healthy (not just for them, but other wildlife also).

When I hear people talk about paying for the upkeep of these horses, my answer is that they cost the taxpayer nothing if left alone in the wild.

Furthermore, this gather cost the US taxpayers a pretty penny. It took place over the Labor Day holiday, which means that the people involved with the BLM got double pay. Pretty nice coincidence for them.

This gather did not need to happen, and it REALLY did not need to happen on a holiday where the contractors (already millionaires) got even richer.

On a positive note. I have been there and watched. I never witnessed and abuse or mistreatment of any horse. In fact, the BLM and Cattoors actually care about the horses. You have to remember, these horses are wild. Some have never seen people or corrals. They are trying to manage the population like other animals. I have nothing against you guys, but maybe you could do something positive yourselves, instead of blaming other people.

Why don't you all take them and put them on your own land and take care of them. That way, there wouldn't be anything for all of you to complain about. Plus, the government wouldn't have to pay daily for the horses. They would never have to be rounded up again and taken care of the way that you think is so terrible. I live in Lovell, I see these horses every week, and I don't see any of you bleeding hearts out there feeding these feral bastards. They are overgrazing the range they live on, which means they need to be weeded out. The horses that are taken out are not harmed in any way. They are taken out and put up for adoption.

Or sold to slaughter if they are unlucky enough to be over the age of 10!!! There are no guarantee's for the older horses! And how many will be injured, or separated from their dams? Not to mention the fact that they will never again see their "family" that they have grown up with. Not to mention the terror and confusion they will be feeling. Not to mention the adjustments they will be forced to make. Are you that selfish that they need to be removed from everything they have known? Proof!!!

As tax payers, they are "our" horses ... they are all things beautiful, innocent, harmless, noble & good. May GOD BLESS THEM even in the midst of their freedoms being stripped away from them !
