i agree with @AprilisHolmes.. Gwyneth Paltrow did a very good job as Emma.. the only thing i hated was her hair pulled back so tight in a bun..it looked like her hair would all fall out..
I love the way the horse slips as Mr. Elton rides toward Emma's house. The slip is serendipitous (for the director) and prophetic (for Mr. Elton). Mr. Elton stops at the top of the hill (his ego) and with a complacent look contemplates the Woodhouse's residence where he hopes to live one day. Great scene and editing.
Am I the only one who is reminded of Mr. Collins in the way BR plays Mr.Elton?? I think it´s a bit over the top, book-Mr. Elton is not THAT obnoxious...
@HermioneNo1 Hahaha, yes. And, although Mr. Elton is...odd, I do not think that he is like Mr. Collins. Mr. Elton is not constantly trying to advise and critique everyone in their doings, like I thought Mr. Collins did. But I do think Mr. Elton is nearly as pompous as Mr. Collins :)
Austen was very right when she said that emma wasint going to be like, really the plain farmer as plain as he may be, of course he would be more worried for his sisters than reading a book, I would choose such a man over some other no so plain any day!!!
Nah the Kate Beckinsale version still wins hands down. I expected better from the BBC after their wonderful version of Pride and Prejudice. Oh well...
@jessyquedens now that i think about it, it's more about GP's facial expression rather than her acting, it's like she's always secretly moping about sth, it struck me long time ago and despite efforts has not let go since. but i understand that some people do get past the expression or don't notice it in the first place so peace :)
@olooshia that version was absolute rubbish. i am a proud american, but i do hate how any literary adaptation undertaken (at least recently) is so...so superficial, so vapid, so...hollywood. i can hardly stand to watch any film produced today. i feel brain cells voluntarily committing suicide when i do.
@lorrainewands How can you say that? Do you not appreciate the beautiful 18th century clothes, the interior designs of all the estates, the tangled, sweet romances?
@bookfreak14 It is interesting considering her own father was a clergyman, it's also interesting that all of her heroine's fathers are either absent or ridiculous.
@bookfreak14 The hero clergymen never seem like clergymen (Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park),but the weirdos are always presented as clergymen so you never forget what they are as they creep you out
Whoever cast this must have gotten a kick out of it what with the Edmund phenomenon.
But honestly, this is the best-cast Emma so far, and Romola Garai is so good at showing us the young, rather immature yet engaging Emma--she's even better than Paltrow I think.
lol! I could see that!! They are very alike but I think that Mr. Collins to drone on too much about Lady Catherine Debough and not enough about Mr. Elton and the relationship would be over. :)
So I know I just commented on this video, but i'm watching this again after watching the 2007 version of Mansfield Park. Blake Ritson is so much more attractive in this movie, I think because his character is confident (ok arrogant...) rather than the shy, awkward character that is Edmund. Plus there's the whole thing with his hair being messed up that makes him devilishly handsome. Haha
Blake Ritson does a great job as Mr. Elton but i can't bring myself to get annoyed with it like i did the previous mr. eltons because i loved Ritson so much in mansfield park.
Emma: What did he say to you before he left? Harriet: Oh that my painting was coming along splendidly. Emma: Oh....He really must be in love
