i had this game and almost beat it, i like the puzzle solving in this game. Inside the package you can find a map with a route to beat this game visiting all the rooms in it. Wired a game with a walktrough inside the box!!
I actually own the NES cartridge of this game and can offer the following information:
1. The bishops (the green and pink enemies) can't be killed with your sword. You can kill them by crushing them with an object..
2. The jumping is just as awkward in the cartridge version of the game as it is in the ROM version.
3. The "wavy floor" with the blue and red lasers works as follows: If it is pulsating/moving, you can stand on it. If it stops pulsating/moving, you can fall through it.
There are 100 rooms. There is ONLY 1 path you can take to reach all rooms and beat the game. Wasting one kay means you cannot beat it. (per insstruction booklet) Game came with a FULL size map to plan the route. The sword cannot defeat the green pidgon thing. The Laser floor thing is on a timer you dont controle it. The blue thing you picked up in the starting room was a map showes you where you were. and... its not a childrens game :(
I have a background with this game it has taunted me for years. When i was 5 my family was very poor and i never got any games or any allowance so i would do things like return pop bottles and saved up for a few years. At about 6 i had got up to 100$ went to the store and bought this game for 79$ because the cover was cool. when i actaly played it i was devistated. i literaly cryed myself to sleep every night for a week. i worked so hard for it. i still have it
man what a sad story :'( I got this game when I was 10 because the cover looked cool and it was cheaper in 1990.. I kept playing it insisting it would get better, on a happier note our tv broke in 1990 so I couldn't play my new game megaman 2 when we finally got a new tv I played it and I was not dissapointed at all :D
I'll suggest the same thing I suggested to other guy reviewing Castlequest
Play the original MSX game, named "Castle Excellent". It's one of the greatest masterpieces ever done on any system.
The NES port indeed sucks.
You are not supposed to have a sword (That's fucking stupid). The 50 lives thing is exclusive to the EUA NES version of the game(Other versions have 5)
And the game has some real devilish puzzles, but you need to play it for more than 20 minutes. You should give it a go.
ive gotten farther. but i run out of keys to get anywhere.. and eventually i get into a room where i dont have any keys to get out of . and i end up throwing a fit and turning it off. if you hit select you can see how far youve gone. i get about 10 rooms in... apparently there is ALOT more.
not a prob, I agree about the new generation playing these kinda games.. Ive been gaming since the atari 2600 and still have every console Ive ever owned *minus the saturn* Ive tried letting my niece and nephews play the atari or the nes and all I get is "can we play the gamecube now?" lol...kids
"Butterknife?" I always called it a "pushpin."

Memories, I revisited again last year, just so I could put my childhood nightmares to rest... and beat it, with keys to spare.

You can`t that since you never played it.
Go to "Virtualnes", and then have your own opinion.
squishington1 2 years ago
I dont have to play it to know its not worth it
EdDogg83 2 years ago
I `don`t think so, I`ts similar to these ZxSpectrum platform games.
By the way, I`d like to see a casual gamer(the wii generation) playing this.
And thenks for the link.
