Might I also add that there is no relationship between having an education and speaking proper English, in Singapore. A good education doesn't necessarily mean fluency in English. Yes, I agree that the pronunciation of fried rice and coke should remain as they are! However I would like to point out that 2/3 of candidates who fail the qualifying tests for degree courses do so because of poor English(in our local Universities by our local applicants). Most of these are 'A' Level certificate holders as well. We certainly cannot deny that a Junior College provides a good education. But I think we have to clearly define what exactly makes a "good education".

It does not matter if students have to learn purely-content subjects or not, every student in Singapore has to learn Engish as it's a compulsory subject. So as long as students have a good & proper education, I'm sure they know the importance of speaking proper English.

Until that day comes, I really hope that educated Singaporeans can learn to code-switch for now because it's useful in communicating with everyone. :)
