  • Fantastic Drew! And I enjoyed the 'entire' 16-plus minutes! I just bought a Canon SX40HS a few days ago and really enjoy it! I am curious how you think it compares to what seems to be it's main competitor, the Panasonic FZ 150, which a lot of people rave about. I don't care about it not having RAW, since I have that on my Canon Xsi DSLR. Someone reviewing the FZ 150 claimed the video was a little sharper than that of the SX40, but I couldn't detect it!

  • I appreciate your reviews . I bought sx40 close up wildlife photography is very impressive.Wide angle not quite as sharp. Manual focus is not practically workable for wildlife photography. Great camera for carrying anywhere image processing and colors very nice. I hope you review FUJI HS30 when it comes out it looks good on paper.

  • I only started looking at the reviews of this camera after i had ordered it online. BOY am i glad now! I`m a complete novice at all the settings and terms of photography. But looking at countless youtube vids and reading online how to use a camera professionally, i`ll have an awesome advantage once it comes in the mail 3days from now. Decent time to understand the ups and downs, aswell as the lefts and rights. Moving forward and backwards will have to come at a later point. Thanx for the review!

  • can you get a depth of field effect from this camera?... bought it today and couldn't figure it out.

pls let me know..how, if yes!

    thanks in advance

  • So glad you started talking about film making. That's the main reason I want the camera and by what I've seen online and on your review I believe it'll be a good entry camera for me and my budget! Thanks!

  • 10/10 review Thanks ☺☺☺

  • hey drew I'm a youtube tech reviewer and i wanted to ask you if this would be a good camera to do my videos . I'm not a novice camera user ,but i'm not a pro i just want a camera under a dslr . Would it be good for video reviews , family video/pictures etc ?

  • @review4u88 Probably. In its price range it's hard to beat. I think the macro was okay on the camera -- I don't remember. It's designed for "not a novice... not a pro," just remember to learn how to use the exposure lock function relative to video production. If you can be more specific, I can respond specifically.

  • @drewnetwork thanks a lot for your response ,it really helped me decide to pick one up soon . I've found it for as cheap as 350 online (considering it's 600 in australia) you can't beat it .

  • @drewnetwork one more question . Does the camera automatically focus during recording videos ?

  • @review4u88 i got this camera for the video, you can check the latest ive done, i shot like 50 minutes of footage, took some pictures too, and used only 1 bar of the battery, i added a 32gb class 6 SD, can record arround 2 hours of video, had used a Samsung Full HD with SSD and the canon has better image and longer battery run

  • Just wondering if this camera has a super macro. Thanks.

  • great video. I'm in the market for a new camera. I can't decide between this and the S100. I know they're different. types of camera but both are Digic 5 and both look great. Which takes better images and video? Thank you!

  • ده أنت راجل ابن مرة ممل

  • great review i will get this camera

  • You look a lot like Russell Crowe :p

  • Hello drew,

i LOVE this camera ,but becouse i have t3i hs for everyday i think SX40 is little big for me

what do you think about canon ELPH 300hs 12. MP ?? i like that a lot too :)

on my trips i alwayes take my t3i is..but what is the BEST compact for me ?

i love the this video thanks alot

  • love ur style !

  • Excellent review Drew. Simply a consumer here. I'm awaiting the delivery of my sx40 next week. I happened upon it while looking for a DSLR, I have a large assortment of Canon FD lenses and thought I could dig them out & use on a DSLR body. After learning about the sx40 why bother! 1 of my interests is Air Shows. This camera is perfect. Big zoom, quality pics AND video too, No lens swaps, no video camera & the ability to plug a HDMI cable to the camera and instantly see what I've captured on HDTV

  • how does this camera compare to the Panasonic DMC-FZ150? plz respond, thank you :)

  • @jamalmortimer The FZ150 has a slightly faster auto focus, is faster at getting ready for the next shot and has a faster burst mode, but the images are slightly better from the Canon. Th FZ150 is starting to show noice and blurs at ISO 400, while the Canon doesn't start on that untill ISO 800, oh and the Panasonic only has 24X zoom.

  • I have a question. I have not received my camera yet but I have downloaded the operators manual. Can I take time lapse movies without the blur effect? I really want a time lapse function but didn't want the expense of the SLR cameras.

  • Great review. I was thinking about purchasing this camera and you convinced me to. Other reviews are done very poorly. Yours was very good.

  • Great video very informative.

  • brilliant review though i already decided to go for this camera --- can't wait to hold this camera in my hand --- CANON IS THE BEST !!!

  • Lol There's no other reviews that I haven't watched (I even have the camera, watch it cuz i'm bored). Anyone know how to access the slow motion function?

  • Good review.

Although discarding Nikon cameras because of experience 10 years ago was a bit odd.

  • Very good review. I have owned the older Canon SX1 IS since 2009, which had full 1080P video at 30 fps (not 24 fps). I have no idea why Canon did not maintain this frame rate in the SX40. However, he SX1 IS had some glaring weaknesses like short battery life) and weak low-light performance. The strength of both cameras, which puts it above every other manufacturer on the market, has always been their high quality, audiophile-grade sound. Sony, Nikon, and Panasonic all have "tinny" sound.

  • i just purchased a canon sx40 and i was wondering how do you focus on one item and have the background blurry?

  • Comment removed

  • a camera for the next 2 years? haha, that's awesome

  • I use it for tests (i use film) and video...pretty happy with it but there are 2 points that annoy the hell out of me though:

-1) way too may ridiculous options, for christs sake all i need is aperture iso and shutter...the rest is annoying distractions when you get a bridge you should already know enough not to need all these ridiculous options.

    2) The aperture and shutter speed settings should be on dials!!!!

  • Hi Drew - awesome review - thanks. I bought one today (still in box - my wife insists I cannot open it until Xmas day!!!) So I am left to drool over the reviews. Will comment more intelligently after the big day. Have a great Christmas. - Pete (Oz - down under)

  • need help....which one should i buy ....(canon sx40 or sony dsc-hx100v)

  • Great review!, thanks buddy...I bought this Canon couple days ago..I like it pretty much, is an awesome Digital Camera!, thanks again.- I paid $ 319 on sale brand new at Staples, and something is cool, is " Made in Japan "...yeahhh!! Thanks Canon

  • Their current video is made with the Canon SX 40?

if so how does the effect of background?

    Thanks!

  • this guy reminds me of ron from parcs and rec hahah

  • This is one of the absolute best reviews I have watched. Fantastic knowledge. Thank you sir!

  • You sound like Dan Rather. "This is ABC News. Thank you, and good night."

  • Hi Drew, great job. Today we test the SX30 , similar to SX40, but , is really dificult keep the camera in the hand ... the sony Hx100V its really best in this aspect ..

  • Hi Drew, I have an SX-40 on the way. Your review makes me feel even better about it than I already do! I picked up a couple of tips in your vid as well. Very nice production by the way, what editor do you use?

  • Hello Drew. Nice review about Canon Powershot SX40. I'm looking a nice camera under $400. • 5:12 Pedo smile. Love the review!

  • @drewnetwork Does this camera have a microphone port?

  • Hello Drew just watched your review I have seen many to buy power shot sx 30is and in that chase I have found your's here. First thing a very best review you have done; I have seen infosync, what camera, cnet, cameralabs, although Laing makes more for tech details but you are way up ahead in this. Drew I need a simple answer from you; should I buy power shot sx 30is or power shot sx40 hs which one? and for your ease I am looking for a complete package good pictures & videos-sx30is or sx40 hs?

  • hello drew,Thanks a million bro, I need your Help please,I had a previous canon Powershot G7,it's broke,When you zoom in,you can't retrieve it back,I looked alto f places ,couldn't find the part for it,now i m goona buy a new one,I live in Paris,I love to take a photo,As i m not a professional Photographer and don't know the ABC of Photography,I love Best Image day and Night, clear and Real and a bit of very good video,Do you recommend me this one,I really need your Help, coz i m goona go for it.

  • @imkalam Well, there really are not easy answers for anything in photography. This SX40 will blow away your old G7 -- that is certain. And, as I mentioned in this review, it's an excellent consumer camera. If you learn to use it well, you could produce pro level results.

    Thanks for watching. Good luck!

  • Hey Drew,

Great review. Nice presentation. Is there any way you can use the SX40 with an external monitor/laptop in video mode? Any hardware or CHDK hack? Thank you anticipated for your time and effort.

  • This review was perfect..yes everyone has more questions but very good job covering things

  • You sir are the best. I cant wait to get one

  • Coming from a VP, this may be shocking, but I have never owned a camera. With that being said, I plan tomorrow to go out and buy the SX40. I have always wanted to learn photography, and from your, as well as others, reviews I think maybe this will be a good one to learn on. Thanks for the information.

  • This camera will make a great christmas present from my mum :) Cheers drew, ohh and on day 1, you got a lot of wraps!

  • Yo Drew Can You Tell Me If This Camera Has "Manual Focus" An If So Can You Do A Tutorial On How It Looks. Thanks That Would Be Awsome

  • @HOLLAATUM yes it has

  • @HOLLAATUM It does have a manual focus function, controlled by a control dial, not any kind of ring on the lens. It works, and it has some focus assist function (an auto focus on your specified subject, not an image zoom in type thing). That said, it's nothing like manual focus on a DSLR camera, and people like me with experience on a DSLR with real manual focus may find the "manual" focus on the SX40 a bit annoying.

  • Drew your review Saved me from purchasing a Sony DSC-HX100V, what a piece of crap. No way to disable "review" pure junk. Tried out extensively at Best Buy ok but not a good camera.

Anyways loving my SX 40 HS sincere thanks. Bought today 11/6/11

  • At 3:21 you mentioned that Sony HX-100V is an awful camera, I agree

Pictures are lack of sharpness and details

When viewing 100% on cam or pc, pics are WATERCOLOR!

I return it the next day!

  • Great review! Very helpful on me deciding over this or a Nikon p500.

  • great Review

  • I wish I would have known about this a year ago...LOL!!

Wanna buy an SX30 IS? :)

I'm sure my next camera purchase will be a DSLR sometime in the next year or two.

    Great review bud!

  • THANK YOU.

  • Love this video. You have a voice just like Walter Cronkite. :) And the video is clear, interesting and fun to watch.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • very good vid !! thanks . could you make a tutorail about exposer lock please !! thanks again .

  • @botanifilm All you have to do is while recording a the video you point the camera to whichever you want the exposure to be locked to (either bright or dim objects) then you press the shutter button halway and you press up or aperture/shutterspeed button. A fairly large asterisk will appear on the bottom part of screen while you are videoing.

  • Thanks much for the vid!!! I quite enjoy your blabbering!!!

  • Kind of disappointing if there's no way to adjust shutter speed when shooting video, e.g. I like slow shutter speed (1/30) when shooting fountains. Sounds like a great camera though. Thanks for the review!

  • Way to blather!

  • great review. whenever you make a video that's not about cats, I love it...especially this one--although I did notice at least 1 cat.

  • Nice review..thanks a lot Drew. Cheers.

  • Sony are good at making TVs. Canon makes cameras

  • nice review

  • If that footage was the footage you took with the camera, it is indeed amazing. You always take great shots..You do fine without a teleprompter...hehehehe

  • Thank you, Drew!

After a week on YouTube...trying to research about the best bridge super zoom camera...I have found it...this Canon SX 40 is the new benchmark in this camera category!... Great review!

  • I was going to just ignore this one until I noticed the comment from onjofilms and had to to stay to the end. I have only just bought a new cheaper camera but if I had the money I would certainly take your professional advice Drew.

  • It was worth listening to all the babble just to see the hot chics at the end.

If I had an extra $400 I would buy it, probably mostly for the zoom and secondly I could use a B cam to my 7D. Actually I do have an extra $400, so I just lied. It's more time I need. Great review.

  • Great review. I would've liked to hear more about why you now have a distaste for Nikon. Switching to Canon is becoming a bigger temptation all the time for me, I would like to hear your position as a former Nikon guy and what prompted you to commit to Canon, or a video with the kittens will do as well.

  • hearing you rattle off names of tripods was awesome. excellent review
