Not only was he one of the greatest hitters ever, he was one of the best pitchers ever. There is no match. And no steroids either. Sorry Bonds. Thanks for posting this!
The Babe having to choke up on the bat to hit against some little dork of a kid?For heaven`s sake somebody destroy this clip and let the Bambino rest in peace.Don`t forget that curse that he put on the Boston Red Soxs !
The Babe was the greatest combination ever for a pitcher/hitter. He hit a homerun every 12 times up, which is better than the 16 at-bats it wook for Aaron to hit every homerun on the average. This is not said to denigrate Hank Aaaron, a fine man who deserves his title. I just think it needs to be pointed out what a complete baseball star Babe Ruth was. Remember that Whitey Ford broke the record for consecutive scoreless innings in WS play and the record had belonged to Babe Ruth.
well what many people did not know is that babe ruth used steriods many people say there wasnt any steroids but there were perfomance enhancers (which bonds took) go look at pud galvin it says he was the first player ever to use perfomance ehancer around the late 1800s so its possible both gerig and ruth use roids it figgers since the new york yankees are a bunch of cheaters go METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we own new york
How many athletes are there like Babe Ruth? When I see footage of him it sends chills up and down my spine. There are only a handful of players who are so great and respected it makes everyone around them better. I would put Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Tiger Woods in that category from the modern era.
Ruth, Jordan, Ali, Gretzky and Woods are probably the truly transcendent athletes. No matter what era of there respective sports, they will forever be known. If your a baseball fan and you don't know who Babe Ruth was, then your not a Baseball fan.
Thanks a million for posting that video. My kids will get a kick out of it as did I. Right on Xcopy. That's what baseball is supposed to do... let us relax for a change and just enjoy.
How ironic that an African American child was chosen to "pitch" to Babe in this video in an era where neither he, (or because of the childs age, his father), couldn't have pitched to him in the major leagues.
yeah, scoonman. good enough for exhibitions and 'batboy good luck charms', a la Ty Cobb's batboy; but not the big leagues. It wasn't the players fault though, it was Commissioner Landis' fault (and Cap Anson). The overwhelming majority of white players wanted integration. As for Babe himself, I believe the black rumors are true. You don't mix German and Irish and get the Babe's face.
Why you bring up the black and white issue here? You would notice it huh. If you want to hear it. White man's blood was shed from the North (Yankee soldiers)(Ruth on Yankees :) - shed to make your black ass free.
former negro leaguer Buck O'Neill said he was incredibly damn important to the game and to it's future (pay included) and that he was as great as they say.
While there were no negros in baseball at the time does not mean that his records wouldn't have existed, the Babe is the Babe- A Legend, like it or not. On a lighter note, I can't wait for Bonds to take the throne as the new hr king!
Take a read of 'The Year Babe Ruth hit 104 Home Runs' by Bill Jenkingson. This book not only compaiers Babe to modern players, but also points out that in off season Barnstorming games Babe and Lou Gehrig would play against some of the best black players of the day. Even getting themselves barred from some towns for doing so.
i'd give a guy who travelled all over the country, and the world, to play baseball and bring popularity to the game DESPITE mlb and his own team threatening and suspending him and attempting to ruin his career only to come back and hit 60 homers and bring glory to a team everyone hated a little bit more respect but that's just me. he respected everyone, and just because he was a tool for ny shouldn't take away from his greatness.
Ruth is a natural in front of the camera! Imagine what some of the other players would have been like w/ a movie camera aimed at them. He says his lines and acts like a pro.
Note: The teacher is played by Franklin Pangborn, a popular, fruity-character comic actor who was in a ton of shorts - Our Gang, Laurel and Hardy, etc.
I like how Babe challenges the kids and doesn't hold back when he hits. KABOOM! "Hey kids let's play baseball, you guys play outfield while I drill homers into left field!"
its good stuff. But watching old videos creep me out a tiny bit for some reason...just because you know everyone in it is no longer alive...and just thinking of their entire lives and thinking back to way back then..i dont know just a mixture, weird.
Good question. Since it's a talkie, it's obviously after 1930. On imdb, there are a number of films with Babe playing himself, and they're all dated 1932, so maybe that's the year.
In the Interviews section of BabeRuthCentral there's actually an interview with Leon Fichman who was in this film called, "Teaching Kids to Pitch". He said it was filmed in 1930.

Read "The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs". He was a lot like the Beatles; he was above even his own hype. Truly transcendent.
