ooooh Kris, Stop growing older, but thanks so for all of these inspirational years. And let us all hope that the Rainbow Spirit comes back to us all in 2010 for the kids that die each day from cancer. They cannot be statistics for bPHARMA. For little Angel Twin Ellie Potvin (now an angel with wings), there has to be other things we can do.

Love this song. First heard when my dad played it for me & my sister on a video called "All Star Jam". Then he played us a scene from an old black and white movie which depicted the song Kris had written. He gave new voice to the scene from "The Grapes of Wrath". It brought tears to our eyes; it was the depression and a penny was hard to come by. Some people can be so kind. Kris Kristofferson is one of the most talented song writers of our time, with stories like "Sunday Morning Coming Down".
Kris does mention that the song was inspired by "The Grapes of Wrath," just not in this clip. You can see the whole program on Sundance (on demand) this month.
Although he doesn't mention it, this scenario is lifted entirely from John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" (pages 160-161 in my cheap-ass Penguin Classics paperback version). Kristofferson adds a few nice details to the story, but it still belongs to Steinbeck. Although I love Kristofferson and think that he is a genius, I'm a little disappointed that he doesn't give credit where credit is due, and, being a Rhodes scholar, surely he knew his source.
@xiphoguy Just think all those music loving listeners have been been exposed to Steinbeck's classic for over thirty years and were not even aware of it. I will bet he is pleased that there are a few still reading him after all those years. I don't think Steinbeck would mind someone as great as Kriss borrowed a few remembered words from one of his novels. If you are going to borrow borrow from someone great. Peace.
@CashPresley32 I agree, watch the highwaymen live video (the good one from Nassau arena) and it is hard to image any 4 artists anywhere like this all together. I finally stayed sober because of these great men.
A feel-good ballad. Kris Kristofferson as a gift for tunes of this nature.

When I saw Kris last here he said that it came from a scene in the grapes of wrath. There are other videos on here where he mentions that as well.

It is great that Willie and Kris are still around, and doing as good now as they have always been, but i miss Johnny and Waylon very much.
