  • I find it funny that the Braves called themselves America's Team (presumably because their games were on the superstation) w/ a straight face considering that they for the longest time (prior to 1991 and w/ the exception of the Joe Torre led team that won the division in '82) they sucked!

  • America's (Baseball) team = NY Yankees.

Not a Yanks fan, but that's the truth.

Some might say the Cardinals, OTOH.

  • @StukInBuf

How's the Yankees Americas team when there are so many people who hate them, including me. Braves will always be Americas team, if not, they'll always own the South.

  • How long did that TBS Sports opening graphic in the beginning last? For some reason, I vaguely remember seeing something similar to that in what I think was the early 90's, and I was born in 1987. Unless I had a really vivid memory at an unusually early age.

  • @kstarpictures it has to be from the fall of '87 to the fall of '89....the station dropped the "W" from its name in the fall of '87 (from "SuperStation WTBS" to "SuperStation TBS"), and became "TBS SuperStation" in '89

  • THATS ALL YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER IS THE 80S..NOW YOU BLOW CHUNKS. YOU RACIST IDIOTS!!!.TOMAHAWK CHOP THIS!!!

  • my dad said the only reason anyone watched the Braves back then was because of Dale Murphy. LOL.

  • lol at skip carey saying avoid getting thumped for the 3rd straight time

  • Rick Mahler pitched every damn night for those late 1980's Braves squads, I swear. What a terrible squad, but such great memories...haha

  • ECKARD DRUGS WAS TOO DAMN HIGH!!!

  • I was just one year old when this aired.

  • I remember well. They were bad, and we kept watching in Columbia SC. I went to a series against the Dodgers in Atlanta, and there were 3000 people there. LOL

  • I remember those days... they were so bad that you'd call and ask what time the game starts and who's pitching, and they would say that the first pitch depended on whether you needed to warm your arm up once you got there.

  • My first MLB game as a kid was in 1986 at Fulton County against the Phillies. Great memories.....even though the Braves stunk and going to the games was like going to a Nascar race. lol

  • Fox Sports sucks. Just because I live an hour away from Cincinnati does not mean I want to watch the Reds. I'd rather not watch baseball if I cannot see the Braves.

  • Eckard no longer exists, it doesn't show that Delta still loves to fly, and TBS isn't so super anymore.

  • @ewd76 You got that right

TBS isn't like what it use to be, it's all nonsense, IMO

  • I remember the Braves between '86 and '89. They really stunk. I want to say that Zane Smith was their winning pitcher, while Rick Mahler was the opposite in '87. The next year, they wound up with the worst record in MLB, but in retrospect you had a lot of young promising pitchers like John Smoltz, Pete Smith, and Tom Glavine.

  • omg I have not seen this in forever. Been a Braves fan since 1982 and I can still remember those terrible days in the 80s when they finished in dead last. Still watched them even then. Great memory of watching Braves games with my dad. Thanks for posting.

  • i am a die hard yankees fan but back in the 1980's i saw braves games on tbs from time to time and loved this music theme.

  • RIP Skip Carey.

  • im too young to remember this but i cant even imagine what memories it would bring back. im looking for late mid 90s to early 2000 tbs stuff....

  • do y'all remember braves recap, braves- nothing else's on, braves-bill tush has the night off so we'll show the game again........... ted turner used to show the heck out of the game.

  • I think it's telling how many of the highlights shown in the intro are of other teams' players!

  • During this era, Andres Thomas, Gerald Perry, Storm Davis, and Mickey Mahler's brother, Rick Mahler. And dont forget Ken Oberkfell.

  • @bhkidd i went to high school with storm davis. his dad was my driver's ed teacher.

  • I became a Braves fan because TBS broadcasted most of the games. After they stopped presenting the Braves, I never watched the channel again.

  • Sent you a PM Retro.

  • This brings back memories. Skip and Billy Sample used to have the oddest conversations especially when the games were blowouts. They were just babbling but they were funny.

  • This is from 1988, I believe. I watched many of these awful teams, sometimes at FulCo Stadium. 100 loss seasons, glass outfield walls, trading Brett Butler, Ted trying to manage, Dave Bristol, Chuck Tanner, Phil Niekro, and Pascual Perez. Still loved em. Then 1991-1995 happened. It was almost orgasmic, especially in 1991. I watched almost every game that year.

  • The Braves were the Souths Team

  • omg....this made me laugh!! how the hell were the braves 'America's team' in the 80s when they sucked ****. now that, my friends, is humour...LMAO

  • @fastfootedone they were called America's team because TBS broadcasted all over the country, like via satellite. Before Dish and DirectTV. And coming from this rabid Braves fan, you don't know sh** about the Braves and Ted Turner history apparently!?

  • Oh God, do I remember those horrible years! The Braves had this knack of signing no talented names Odiby McDowell. LOL

Ricj Mahler was an average pitcher at best, but the Braves had some very mediocre pitching back then.

  • @starVol Here are some more for you: Rowland Office, Andres Thomas, Willie Montanez, Preston Hanna (ERA around 7), Mickey Mahler, Rick Camp, Brian Asselstine, Gene Garber, Rafael Ramirez and Glenn Hubbard, and Biff Pocoroba. Trading away Brett Butler, Dale Murphy, Len Barker, and Steve Bedrosian. With Chief NocAHoma in the stands. Ahhh, memories of summer days watching the Braves getting clubbed like a baby seal. Then came 1991. First time I ever saw FulCo sold out. It was awesome.

  • @bhkidd Craig McMurtry, Brad Komminsk, Jeff Burroughs who I swear was blind, Claudell Washington. Love the Bravos!!!

  • @keikikolohe Also, Tommy Bradford, Darrell Chaney, Mike Lum, Andy Messersmith, and Buzz Capra (Mid 70s). Ted managing the team for a day in May 1977 (was there for that one).

  • @bhkidd Bob Horner, Chris Chambliss, Phil Niekro, Al Hrabasky, Bruce Benedict, Bob Watson, Rufino Linares, Pepe Frias to name of few.

  • Thanks for sharing! Brings back memories! RIP Skip!

  • @AWorldExposure I didn't that you were a Braves fan!

  • @saintsnbraves2 Hey Saintsbraves2! lol I was back in the early 80's to early 90's. I know most of those years they weren't any good, but they were fun to watch. Now, I don't really even know who the players are anymore on any team. lol Did you watch the Braves back when this theme aired?

  • @AWorldExposure I got into the Braves in 92. I haven't stopped rooting for them. They are leading the NL East.

  • @saintsnbraves2 That was a good time to start watching the Braves. I kinda lost touch with baseball after the strike in 94. I'm kinda back into baseball, but don't get to watch the Braves since they left TBS. I only have basic cable.

  • no skip... you're a beauty

  • How are they America's team? Just wondering. I've always considered either Sox team Amerca's team because they've been such lovable losers over the yearss (or even the Cubs for that matter.

  • @bakerandbaker1 They were dubbed "americas team" because they were carried on superstation TBS on the basic cable package, throughout the country. So they developed a following because alot of people would s the Braves on their cable affiliates. I personally saw this when I moved to RI in 88, I would see more Braves games (on cable) then the Red Sox (on local TV) Of'course I was biased being from Atlanta.

  • lol, Atlanta Braves

AMERICAS TEAM. MORE LIKE MEXICOS TEAM

  • Watching the Braves in the 70's was painful, but I loved the music and I wound up becoming a big time Braves fan because of it.Thanks TBS.Good Post man.

  • freekin epic post. . . used to live in lawrenceville and member watching all these games on tbs, used to love this intro as a kid. luved bob horner and dale murphy

  • Omg does this bring back memories. Thanx for posting this. I have been a lifetime Braves fan even when they were the laughing stock of baseball in the 80s. Dale Murphy for HOF.

  • This opening has to be from 1987 or later, because the Braves are wearing the blue and red tomahawk uniforms, not the all-blue as they did in the mid-1980s.

  • @DNSKansas Sept 14, 1988. So you were close.

  • @RetroBoyWontDie Ouch, they lost 1-0 that night. Mahler was indeed hard luck....

  • Wonderful memories of cursing the TV as the Braves were swept time after time. lol

  • that was awesome great memories can you post the rest of this game ? or either pieces of it?

  • @Creepingdeathx81 Hey dude, you may NOT want to see the rest of that game, good chance we got our asses kicked! That season LA won the series and I think we lost 100 games! ouch, i'm having flashbacks. I'm not sure if that was the same season the our catcher and 1st baseman got in each others face during a game.

  • Ahhh, great to hear Skip again!!

  • I agree with you on that.

  • Yes, TBS was great back then. I actually have this whole game on DVD. Certainly was great times back then.

  • @wtbs1989 really? can you upload a little bit of it that would be awesome!

  • I can remember being six or seven years old getting excited when the turner emblem came up... Skip Carrey is the man...

  • What memories!

  • Looks like this game was played on September 14, 1988. Braves lost 1-0. Orel Hershiser (21-8) got the win, and Rick Mahler (9-15) got the loss. Both pitchers pitched a complete game. Mike Marshall hit a game winning double off Mahler (scoring Kirk Gibson) with no outs in the bottom of the 9th. Dodgers improved to 84-60, and Atlanta fell to 49-95.

  • and the dodgers would go on to win the world series

  • Awesome clip. Takes me back. Life was so good.

  • I agree

  • Also RetroBoyWontDie, I've just posted the correct, late '90s theme of Atlanta Braves Baseball on TBS! You should check it out.

  • Wow, this is a cool '80s theme for Braves baseball, despite the poor quality of the team back then. Cool theme nonetheless!
