I have no interest in or understanding of cameras, photography or film making but for some reason found this clip really watchable. I think it's just that I enjoy listening to people talk fluently and knowledgeably about something they're enthusiastic about, even if I don't understand more than one word in three. Is that weird or normal?
Whoever would spend $3,500 on a camera to shoot video that OVERHEATS every 20 to 45 minutes, and then adds on another $4k in accessories and tries to pass it off as a "CINEMA FILM CAMERA" is INSANE.
It amazes me the numbers of people buying these cameras up because they can shoot video, but they have no idea they only shoot 12 minutes of video, and overheat regularly in all conditions.
Sorry, but if I spend $8k, it will be on a REAL VIDEO CAMERA
@tzethye i do believe that gap concerning what's semi professional and expert is little these days. d7000 is all we all want. go to... freedslr . co m remove spaces and take an opportunity to bring home a Brand New Nikon D7000
the audio is not good on them. 35m vid has it's limitation, namely audio and mobility. Still nothing like a shoulder held vid camera with purose built audio.
5D made for the tropfest mini doco types. Great quality vid but it requires more than that
Wow. Nice sales pitch. I have to disagree with his theory about still photographers and motion photographers becoming the same profession. It's really always been about choice. It's been affordable and practical to carry a smaller HD camera and a DSLR for a while now. Some of us like motion photography and some of us like still photography. Nice pitch though. I do agree that this camera is amazing.
@DistantlandsEnt It was probably the pressure of being on camera, everyone knows that they are 2 proffesions/hobbies and that they've been around for over 100 years and this camera-technology is no reason for them to get merged together... Sure maybe some will start todo both cos they discover new ways of capturing life but still c:
@DistantlandsEnt Still Photography and Videography/Cinematography are NOT and will NEVER be the same profession. Sure there are many cross overs, but they are each their own profession and art form that take skills, talent and experience to master.
Everyone needs to remember one thing. All these Cameras are just TOOLS to get a job done.
Just OWNING good tools doesn't make you a craftsman. It takes Knowledge, Skill and years of experience.
I have one and have shot enough video on it to realize a couple of things. FIrst, warm tungsten tones,as they go toward black but are above black, will show a great amount of video noise. You should leave your lens at it's widest opening when shooting video in less than perfect light to cut down the noise. The other thing is that the lenses are sharper than the sensor resolution...easy to see when focusing using the zoom buttons and the back screen. The screen will be sharper than your final.
Wow, thanks Canon I guess all these great photographers never thought about shooting moving pictures until now. Hey LoOk Pictures CaN MOvE ToO *drool* I always thought DP stood for Donkey Phlem, not director of PHOTOGRAPHY. But seriously having a nice L series lens in front of a digital sensor you're already using for other stuff is sweet!
@y2kvictim I agree his video looks like a shaver commercial..Also 5d footage is compressed falls apart if you use aftereffects etc. It has bad highlights shadow detail, breathing lenses bad aliasing pretty much everything you want from a camera inc manual controls isnt there but i like the big sensor. but for the money its very good but over hyped like this Laforet guy.
Canon 5Dm1 (the original) CANNOT do video. It's 3 years old at this point. The 5Dm2 is part of a new generation of cameras in the Canon line geared to photographers who want to do video vs. the other way around.
I liked the interview of a sorts, but the camera man is one of the most amateurish I have seen. Here is a review of a stunning camera, revolutionary and the videographer is bush league. Will someone tell him (here) to go back to 101 and get an education!
On another note, what does a $4,300 Sony Z5 or Z7 do better? for double the price?
New Update! Firmware 2.0.4. Allows for full manual audio input levels. Now with total Manual control of lenses; and he's exactly right, every photographer should rejoice!
I bought the 5d2 and Im disappointed. Bad image, bad color, poor automatic white balance, poor definition, poor focus, very bad JPG files, bad raw files. Maybe good for video but not good for shooting.
My lumix g1, my nikon d70 and my pentax k20d have more dynamic color... I have never seen a good picture taken with canon 5d2.
I just had a look at the Redrock setup for the 5D mk2. The prices for these things is just a complete piss-take. You could make your own for next to nothing
this camera is no match for a RED a real RED cost 30g with the glass and has proven it selft better than the imax that cost like 300k plus the red can be hand held, canon is great but canon and RED are not in the realm of equals yet
nowhere near each other...I have the 5D mark II, and am somehat annoyed that a great lens like my zeiss 17-35 with conourus adaptor shot in natural or very low sharpening mode, needs more sharpening in post. THe hype with digital cameras, even this true 1080P job, is that imagery needs post sharpening....and the sharpening settings on canon look sharpened, not just sharp. However, with that lens, I'm taking the rocky mountaineer rail ride in canada, with the dome windows.-movies HD and superwide
So, for those of us that want to shoot stills and shoot video on the side, this is a great value. Also, if you don't want to spend the money on shooting 4K when your projects will never hit a theater. It's stupid. It's like people who shoot HD and then post stuff to youtube in SD. Waste.
Before you go ranting and raving, please get your facts right. Obviously comparing a 4k camera with a 1080p isn't exactly fair. What you're getting with the 5d mkii or the 7d is phenomenal for the pricetag.
And 30,000 for a Red setup? Maybe if you were you Nikon glass with the bare minimum. The Red doesn't compete with Imax. True Imax film is around 18k (though we can't do a telecine with that resolution yet). And the Red can be hand held? And the Canon can't? Please don't spread crazy rumors.
@ColinWorley lol man nothing is fair when it comes to photo / video gears. Do you know how much that video rig costs? $3800! That's pretty much the same price as the camera itself! Is that fair?
Um, neither this, nor the Red One is anywhere near the level of IMAX quality. This camera is good, but it's not as good as the Red One and 35mm cameras. IMAX 70mm film is and will be for awhile the highest quality moving image on the planet.
red one is 17k the body, you will need lensess , the chepeast ones is 1500, if you want a viefinder its 1500 an lcd its about 2500 handles and other accesories, so the camera it´s about 30k
This is a great advancement in technology. However, this guy is sooooo wrong. He is not a film maker, he is another techy who thinks that he is a cinematograpgher.....good luck!!
I was with him until the RED comparison, and then hands down he is not very savey in the ways of the industry...
i just messed with it at best buy and it feels like you take a 50d then install a supercharger and 4 turbo's and make it as easy to use as a go kart

well the RED camera is very practical if you use it for the big screen or print it to film. obviously for tv and internet it is a little overkill, but it still definitely has its uses.
the red cam is best for post altering. its good for digital compositing if say you have to match scales. It allows you to add motion with a stable shot like a camera shake or a slight pan.

Sorry but this guy isn´t an profesionell.Every semi pro Camcorder gives you more opportunitys. I´m interested in how much money he get for this fake or no information.
Unfortunately Markentobi your incorrect. Cmos sensor of the M/II actually rivals that of the infamous Red One camera. The Mark II comes at a cost of $3,500 Vs the Red One at $20,000. yes your correct the camera itself does not have all the features of most prosumer cameras and it only shoots at 30FPS but it can be converted to 24FPS in any NLE. Anyone who has half a brain notices that it gives the Red One a run for it's money in picture quality. What is film but 24 still frame pictures anyway?
5d mark 2 is a great camera however comparing this to any of REDS cameras or any 4k camera is just silly. There is a use for both of them, but to be accurate HD has no where near the resolution of a red one. As a matter of fact RED makes a 28k sensor, do you realize how big that is? Vincent LaForet is a great photographer but he don't know shit about film/video. Anyone who has the slightest interest in production could see that.
I'm guessing you're rich and own one? of course the most expensive ones have a lot more quality than these 2k dlsrs. But its a start isn't it? its almost the same quality as the HVX 200, and even better cheap, if anyone is rich, please buy RED, if anyone wants cheap get this, and if anyone else wants to wait, get scarlet.2K camera vs 4K, which will win? the 4K of course.stop fighting over it and just be grateful that this camera will change for the better later on(hopefully)
I've had Canon 5D Mark II already for 5 days ;-) and I feel obliged to warn you about some stuff :-/ Although it's a wonderful stills camera, and it shoots 25p full HD, you've no control over the movies' exposure. Manual mode is blocked. It'll set APERTURE/ISO/SHUTTER speed AUTOMATICALLY, which, I suppose, is not quite expected with a product like this. Don't consider it a little semi-pro camcorder. It's not! And more - the movie picture is a bit posterized... sort of and old VHS... honestly!
The camera, as a STILL camera, has amazing features. I could care less it does video too, I dont need it. Most serious cameras have been rich peoples toys at one time. Still photogs have been complaining about that for years. Run to Costco, buy a camera, and you are "a photographer"..HAH!
why is he pretending he knows what he's talking about with the cage/matte box or shooting video, he just explained that he has almost no experience with video, just a marketing puppet, what a tool.
The part that is amusing is that people are acting as if this is the first video camera in the world. Motion picture cameras have been around for AGES, but most people who shot still didn't bother buying one because it wasn't the latest or greatest rich person's toy and because making movies is WAY HARDER. The other day I saw a rich dork with a 5D II with a boom mic on it shooting his dog in the park.
Well, that's the way it's going. Now it'll be only the DOP/director's skills to do something worth watching. MarkII is not yet so revolutionary anyway.
Film-making is a very different art form than still photography. Still photographers who think they can become film makers just from buying a camera are in for a rude surprise. They will have a lot to learn.
I agree. Film-making is much more difficult. I have a feeling there are going to be some very bad videos floating around by people with more money than talent...
RED ONE is an attractive alternative...but if price is really your concern, it's not an alternative at all. We're talking about a system where you buy the body only for $17,000. You don't even get a lens for less than $5,000 (and that's a conservative estimate). RED ONE is great, but really high end.
This, for us starving multi-media artists, is right where it's at.
SCARLET will be an answer to that, shooting native RAW 2K or more. Canon 5Dmk2 is just marking to be sort of this thing. Really don't consider it a alternative. Wait for Scarlets. They'll be cheap and really worth it (I hope!). 5Dmk2 is a bit disappointing. I just came back from mountain trip with it and... the results are a bit sad. And I repeat, what I always write - it's fully AUTOMATIC. No picture control for cinematographer!
I agree I am waiting for a scarlet, end of story. Their is a hack/firmware update to fix your problem with the 5d mark 2, just figured I would mention that.
MPEG-4 is just not good enough. As soon as you start working on the image (color correction etc.) you get massive artefacts and noise. And if you have to buy all that gear he demonstrates, you'll end up with another 10 grand. RED ONE still is much more attractive and gives much better images.
actaully laforet needed at least 10k worth of Ice and a like 3 large strobes and panels to produce the shot. you need to fit it with 17k worth material before you are ready to roll.they aren't telling the truth ( realistically ). the quality is nice but high end stuff like laforet are way too expensive .They make it sound like you buy it and you are ready for hollywood LMAO!
Very good point.... and very true. Filters and lenses are always where they capitalize. its like printers.... sell the printers cheap and then hit them across the head for the ink!
If you think in terms of shooting 'scenes' most of the time 10 mins is more than enough. I think the 30mins will be fine. The other reason for the restriction is in some countries a camera that can record over 30 mins of video is considered in a different tax/duty bracket. In the UK, for example, there is no duty of digital SLRs but more than 10% on video cameras. So I think it makes sense.
Great video keep up the good work.

It's not! And more - the movie picture is a bit posterized... sort of and old VHS... honestly!

haha wow! shows how much you know.... It's called EXPOSURE LOCK!!!!!!

FinanceandCommerce 3 years ago
I agree. Film-making is much more difficult. I have a feeling there are going to be some very bad videos floating around by people with more money than talent...

Still photography requires training, you need to know lighting also.... it's same same....

RED ONE still is much more attractive and gives much better images.
svenboxx 3 years ago
I agree, he know not what he is talking about Red one shoots at 4k this camera is not even capable of half of that~
Whitelinefilms 2 years ago
I have just testet the MPEG-4 file in COLOR. (The Grading program that comes with FCP 2). No Artefacts and noise.
But since the MPEG 4 is long gop, its a good idea to convert to Appel Prores 422 if you got problems.
Shure, Red is better, but so is the price.
svommund 2 years ago
not even close to 10grand. All together about 2 thousand at most.

actaully laforet needed at least 10k worth of Ice and a like 3 large strobes and panels to produce the shot. you need to fit it with 17k worth material before you are ready to roll.they aren't telling the truth ( realistically ). the quality is nice but high end stuff like laforet are way too expensive .They make it sound like you buy it and you are ready for hollywood LMAO!

Very good point.... and very true. Filters and lenses are always where they capitalize. its like printers.... sell the printers cheap and then hit them across the head for the ink!

You do neglect to mention the following....
Movie Length Max duration 29m 59sec, Max file size 4GB for most people enough, i suppose. Fantastic camera.. Thanks for the vid :)
stubones 3 years ago
If you think in terms of shooting 'scenes' most of the time 10 mins is more than enough. I think the 30mins will be fine. The other reason for the restriction is in some countries a camera that can record over 30 mins of video is considered in a different tax/duty bracket. In the UK, for example, there is no duty of digital SLRs but more than 10% on video cameras. So I think it makes sense.
sonnofa1 3 years ago 3
I agree with you, I think they may have thought of that when developing the camera. Honestly I think is to keep from warming up the sensor!
