I love this video, what a fantastic comedian, he had the gift. I loved Johnny's reaction when he saw Winters in overalls. I remember the roasts and they were hilarious.
I have never been fully sure if Winters was a mad genius, or truly really did have a screw loose. Irregardless, he is one of the funniest people that have ever lived.
Most of the time Winters would come up with an idea and just run with it. He didn't work out lines beforehand,he completely improvised. Sure,he had the idea of the character of being some kind of dim redneck but that was about it. Johnny Carson would have the greatest guy to have a beer with. He really let others speak on his show, you didn't get him talking a lot. I would have loved to hear what HE had to say.Jonathan Winters, though. The weirdest & most creative comedian EVER! He still Lives!
I liked when Johnny said to Barry Goldwater "He's the only republican tonight who's out on bail" and "I thank you Senator, and you were even funnier tonight then you wre when you ran against Johnson" lmfao.
Dean Martin had some of the funniest people on his shows! Johathan Winters was always so great to watch, you just never knew what he was going to say!
I can see Jonathan Winters saying, if he hadn't said it already (I just watched the first two minutes and fifteen seconds of this), "The last trick he ever performed as a magician was at his high school graduation ceremony in 1943. He wanted to make something disappear and that was the last we saw of him."
@sirwob Johnny was one of JW's biggest fans. Yup, he just looked at "Willis Mumford" and cracked up! Dean Martin was probably the other greatest fan; he worked with Jonathan a lot, but even he would crack up in the middle of a routine with the great improv artist, Jonathan Winters. It was always fun to watch The Dean Martin Show when JW was on because you knew there would be a contest to see who could throw the other guy a wild adlib that would break him up. Jonathan Winters usually won.
@Kalooookalay Jonathan WInters is retired now. By the strangest coincidence, Elwood P. Suggins and Maudie Frickert however, have gone missing. And they are VERY much missed, believe me.
Thanks for the wonderful, inventive laughs, Jonathan!
Johnny just adored Jonathan Winters and you can see it in his eyes , I am drinking a Heineken right now and watching this . To you Johnny , You are the greatest .
I so agree the respect and affection that Johnny had tor Jonathan. And for each other. When Jonathan came out and he touched Johnny's cheeks, you could see the admiration. I'm not having a Heineken but a Milwaukee's Best and. We will never see talent like this again. Bob

It's no small feat to come up with two distinctly different "hoopy" characters who are individually not generic...
Willis Mumford and Elwood P. Suggins are entirely different people, and Winters is (duh!) a genius.
(And Carson's character, "Floyd Turbo," owes them both.)
