A ship that started in infamy but then reclaimed it's honour fighting for the Turkisk navy and carrying the remains of a great Turkish patriot then to end up on the scrap heap a great disservice to the flagship of the Ottoman Empire
What a shame that state-of-an-art battlecruiser now remains in scraps after causing Ottomans enter First World War which is a black mark in Turkish history.
Der erste Weltkrieg hat bewiesen, das die Türken der einzige Partner Deutschlands war auf denen sich das Reich verlassen konnte.Sie waren den deutschen Heer ebenbürtig.
@artregeous Despite the scrapping, many parts of this battleship still remains in museums across Turkey. We should make a campaign for the re-construction of Yavuz.İt would have been awesome.
Thank you for this fascinating video of a ship I looked up in Jane's Fighting Ships in the 1950s.. Shame she was scrapped. Isn't the name of the city where Ataturk's remains were taken "Ismir" rather than "Ismit" (for Smyrna)? Thanks for the recommendation to look this up.
@FRAGIORGIO1 Indeed a shame that she wasn't preserved.
Ismir and Ismit are two different cities. Ismir is indeed the former Smyrna at the Aegean Sea while Ismit is the former Nicomedia at the Asian side of Marmara Sea.
@demarch77 No problem. I understand that my videos are pretty long compared to others and reading subtitles is not everybody's taste. And thank you for your compliments.
Tragic, think it was used as a museum from about 65-70,at least it states as much in an old book I have by A Preston,he said it was crewed by 1 old man and a ships cat.
@elswick1542 The German wikipedia page stated that Goeben was used as a museum but other sources, like books by Siegfried Breyer or H.W.Neulen don't do so. And I don't speak Turkish to evaluate Turkish sources. Therefore I didn't include it. Goeben was also offered to the West German government but they rejected to buy her. A pity.
It is a pitty and a shame, the British Navy could not stop her. The "Goeben" and the light cruiser "Breslau" escaped to Turkey, both ships handed over to the TR - Navy.
@BlitzWotan It's in particular a shame for the german government that they didn't have any interest in this ship after its decommission from the Turkish navy (Yavuz was even registered as NATO warship) who offered the Goeben/Yavuz for a symbolic price. A pity for all navy enthusiasts: one of the few surviving and the only german dreadnought was scrapped instead of been saved as technical monument. A time whitness of the dreadnought era.
@ichmalealsobinich I read somewhere that the scrapping of Goeben/Yavuz was the equivalent of finding a fully-preserved mastodon in glacial ice and deciding to burn it.
@parsecboy Yes it was, as the only Capital ship still existing from WW 1 it would have been nice to see her restored to the condition that she was in while still a German ship at the beginning of the war.

Goeben had 11cm guns, like Von der Tann ,Moltke, & Seydlitz
p0l6rb36r 7 months ago
@p0l6rb36r I fear you are mistaken. She had 28cm guns which are 11 inches.
DrGull1888 7 months ago
@DrGull1888 duh my mistake 11'" is rt
p0l6rb36r 6 months ago
@p0l6rb36r 11cm guns would not have been much heavier than an 8.8cm AA gun or a more modern 10.5cm gun

Great video, the Yavuz was a beautiful ship with quite a history. A shame that it was scapped, she was the last of her kind.
