Nutnfancy! Hey bud, I'm looking for a weapon light, but don't want to shell out hundreds of bucks. I just want a good, affordable AA light that will be reliable on a long gun. I already have a LD20 but it seems all the light mounts are for 1 inch barrels and all the weapons lights are cr123a. I don't get why a standard AA flashlight is almost taboo as a weapon light, given the technology you so eloquently illustrated here. Any suggestions?
@captncandycorn Because an average person would use an alkaline AA. Alkaline AA are limited in their power ability, roughly 0.5 watt of nice sustained power, and that is at normal temperatures, 50-100F.
If you put 0.5 watt into the most advanced LED, U2 bin xm-l, that would only be 75 lumens, and you'd be drawing more than 0.5 watt from the cell, because of circuit overhead.
Energizer more/less has a monopoly on lithium AAs in the US, so compare the online price of cr123 and they are the winner.
This was the first Nutnfancy review I ever saw almost a year ago. Great stuff. I would like to encourage people to also look at 4sevens flashlights. You can check out some of Nutn's reviews of those as well.
@nutnfancy I like this video and am in the market for a HQ LED handheld, but this video is 2 years old. Any chance we can get an update on light tech?
I have used the LD20 with the Lantern cone and in the Turbo mode it will get warm with continuous use. However, I have run it for over an hour straight on turbo many times and even though it was hot, the light has never failed me.
nutn i just got a great fenix light for around 35 dollars the E21, doesn't have all the modes of the LD series but i think you should review it as a cost effective outdoor/ tactical option its a great light
I was about to order a Fenix LD20. Didn't realize they are Chinese. Ugh. I'll have to think about it. I like the features of the LD20 better than the Quake AA Sq.
Again, thanks for taking the tremendous amounts of time it must require to make these videos.
@Deep13Deep13Deep13 I just got an LD20 and am very happy with it. One issue I have is that unless you use NiMH batteries, you don't get all the lighting modes until the batteries are slowly depleted. At least this is what I've read. Still, great light!
awsome light!! I bought a surefire e2d led defender light with 200 lumes and i love it!! it was expensive but I bought it for a few reasons, quality, reliability, and because it was made in u.s.a.!! keep up the good work fancy love the vids!

I bought the Fenix L2D as well about 2 years ago and can't give it enough praise. Well built and very bright and battery last long. Don't get Surefire get Fenix, well worth the money.
I really liked how you asked if it will change the way we do business. I have roughly the same light (L1D) and have had it for a while, and do have it with me at all times. Can't even count how many times I have needed it and use it at least once daily. Yes, it changed the way I do things knowing I always have light. The specific one I have now replaced a zenon surefire that may still be better than what we are usually issued.
I've picked up some different cheap ebay cree flashlights and have to say that some actually work really well (I abused one of them quite a bit, video coming soon). The biggest surprise was the ultrafire m10, it actually out performed my Fenix L2D in light.
I'd love to get your take on that one or some other cheap ultrafire light as a budget option,or maybe in the role of backup or as a usk or bug out write of, (costs about $6-10, works best with 14500 batterys but also takes normal AA)
i just got my fenix ld10 ...its the lil brother of the l2d and ld20...anyways...for a single AA battery it shines brighter and better then my mag light that has 4 D batteries...i know its hard to believe but shesh it surprised me..and my ld10 wasnt even on turbo...deff worth the 50...i love the features of it better then surefire and streamlight

i am going to be ordering a 4 sevens quark 123^2 tactical r5 edition in a few days. it will be my first high end flashlight. i have only used 2D cell mag lights and 2AA cell mini mags with led upgrade.
cant wait to have the ability to actually see things.
I wish I knew more people who got excited about flashlights like you and me, Nutnfancy. I really dig your reviews and the whole project, keep up the good work, it is much appreciated.

Given these 3 batteries, AA, CR123, or CR2, what would you recommend for a survival kit? I know that CR123 and CR2 batteries are smaller and more powerful than AA batteries, but AA's are much easier to come by and can be used in many different devices. Just would like your thoughts. Thanks.
have you ever heard of LED lenser??? i have one of them and so far it has been excellent. i'd love to hear your opinions on them and they are quite expensive but so far they have had some great references.
actually the mag lite has the ability to be turned into a lanter it works like a candle you take the head off put it on the bottom of the shaft and you have a candle i have used it eating lunch in a cave
I now own a Fenix TK10, TK20, MC10, and a MC10. I work goverment, Diplomatic Security to be exact. Many agents use Surefire only because they have been around awhile and have high quality, but many are switching to Fenix as the name is spreading around. I use Fenix exclusivley in the work that I do as they amazingly rugged and functional, but what is truly amazing is the price. Sorry Surefire, your monopoly days are over.
@jefallijay lol! the instructions that came with my fenix TK40 says "DO NOT shine in eyes" because it can cause serious damage. you can definitely hurt the enemy's vision by shining the light into their eyes.
River Rock looks very similar to the current Rayovac offering, the update of the one I bought last summer at Wally World. Maybe not the best light, but fits my needs well enough. Someday the Fenix will be on my hip...
I am looking for a dependable light with good lumens but also with durable housing to double as a self defense tool. Is the Fenix housing strong enough?
NUTNFANCY i wanted to buy either a LD20 or a LED Lenser P7. which one would you recommend, from what I've been seeing the Lenser looks like it can throw the light much further. But its not regulated and you cant use Nimh batteries...
I hear your "cheapo" light failure is from even slightly gunky threads. Apparently, the tail switch somehow runs through the un-coated battery tube threads. The tolerance is supposedly very close, and the cheaper manufacturing doesn't come up to that standard. Just passing on what I read, you may have to constantly clean the threads and screw the tail on really tight.
Not Exactly... I have a modded Surefire C3 Centurion... mods are as follows : (1 Defender Strike Bezel. 2 Click-On Tailcap. 3 Rechargable 3.7 volt Lithium batteries (X3). 4 LED 290-300? Lumens Bulb [I think the bulb is chinese?korean? but it works great, tons of power and LED bat saving ability. BTW thanks to rechargables I dont spend fortunes buying pricey CR123 batts (which run for 2dlls EACH). Ive wasted like 200 bucks on this setup.
I recently purchased a Fenix TK10, which by the way is currently been reduced from $99 to $66 & shipping & handling for only $1. Excellent light, however, it also came with a lanyard & holster probably $30 worth of extras if you were dealing with Surefire. You'd have to buy them seperately.
Don't get me wrong Surefire makes a good product, but they are over priced.
dude, I just wanted to say thanks for the vid. You've inspired me to grab one of these babies to put on my new G19 which will go great for my POU which is late nights in the woods messing around in creeks and canals. Something I can mount and use in that capacity, then take off when I holster and use the light by itself when I want.
i know surefire are a alot pricey but, some people dont need or want all that applications, they just want one light mode. lets not break on surefire now without them you wont have other companies making similar high end lights because they started all this.
I have to omitt that I am a big Surefire fan. However, I have been rethinking about the whole Surefire thing. Surefire is over priced and over rated to a degree and it is getting bigger. I am looking get a different light. I am starting to look at the Fenix more. Probably next month I am going to get one. The price is a lot smalled then a Surefire.
"Surefire is over priced and over rated to a degree " I totally agree. Moreover SureFire is very strict with its dealers in its pricing. If the dealers sell it below the SureFire designated minimum, which is HIGH, they will be cutoff. I like the SureFire product, love their catalog, but I don't like their exorbitant pricing and product arrogance. Their days are numbered with competition like this.
Have a good look at the LEDLenser range. Im a big fan of SF aswell but changed when I found LEDlensers. One reason being CR123 batteries are expensiv compared with AA's.
I have two SF G2's. One standared & one with an LED replacement head. But my LED Lenser Police Tech with adjustable focus still beats them for battery time and power. The SF with the old bulb in it will beat the Led but it will only last max 40mins. The Led will last 20+hrs.
I love SF but LEDLenser has something going for it.
You do awesome reviews on knives and guns, but perhaps I could shed some additional light on Fenix.
After a good amount of use, you may experience:
1. Tail cap may fail due to screw-in retaining ring used (no Threadlock/Locktite/etc.). After a number battery changes, these have come loose in my experience. Result is the switch will loose electrical contact.
2. P3D samples have been tested to leak moisture into the head (ie. fogged lens) when fully submerged in less than 1 feet of water.
By two years, ill have bought the next "superior" flashlight. Your lucky if you have a flashlight for over a year and its still "high tech" for that time. :)
The only thing I can see going bad with a smaller light is that if your a police officer for instance, you may have/want to use your light as a melee weapon. A smaller light is pretty much useless to this point.
But hey, it's all about what you plan or could have to use it for.
yes.. check out INOVA. Also, the streamlight stylus has a red version. At walmart, there is an energizer head lamp with red and white LEDs.. I have 2..
That's a very good video on lights. I bought the new Petzl Myo RXP headlamp. This L.E.D. is very bright. It blows last year's Myo XP out of the water.
One of your other vids got me reading and I had a question for all the tech heads. With the rechargeable Lithium Polymer (LiPo) torch technology right around the corner, do you all think that it is worth it to upgrade NOW or wait for the LiPo LED lights that promise rechargability and long life with great power and cold resistance? I want to upgrade my torches, but batteries that you cannot recharge are KILLING me. I want to get a recharge tech based light. Thoughts?
I spent $150 on my StreamLight Scorpion LED. It's a great light, when I worked Security I carried the Scorpion LED and a couple times the factory lost power while I was on patrol and I had the power of my LED 2xC maglite in a handsize flashlight and it got me back to the office to get my maglite. I was skeptic of LED at first but once I bought a quality LED light I will never go back. My first LED light was cheap and from wallmart and turned me off them until a friends showed me a good one
I am ordering the L2D for My EDC and BOB so that I can get a better light that runs on a easy to find battery. Sometimes the massive power of a CR123A flashlight is a negative because of the price of batteries. Retail they can run for $10/CR123A battery. There is a store in my town that sells them for about $7 after tax. I'm working on getting the L2D because it leaves me with one battery type for my Flashlight and portable radio in my BOB. One Battery type is best for a BOB
Google "fenix-store" and you'll find the store. The cheapest one I found was the E01 but it is not very powerful though it only costs $15 + Shipping. I'd go with the one nutnfancy used in this video the L2D. It's just over $50 but well worth the extra money. Quality and good light. The E01 uses an older model of LED and the L2D uses Cree 7090 XR-E LED which IMO is far superior.
You don't sound commercial, you sound utterly convincing. I am one of those guys sticked to old maglights, but not anymore. I have just ordered L2D!!!
yo nutnfancy..... i have a few fenixs including the l2d but i really think you shoud try out one of their cr 123 lights and i would also recommend the new LD10........ it has an equal light out put to your L2D and only uses one AA. im a big fenix fan. they are a great company and have the most lumens for the price
I like your videos sir, and your personality is colorful and memorable. I'm using small bits of your speech for my lessons on colloquial speech with my Japanese students. Excellent work.
Nice set of videos, thanks for uploading. I'm currently trying to decode which to buy, and like the look of the Olight T 25. Similar to L2D but with tighter beam and more throw - but can't tailstand and doesn't have a diffuser....which to choose...
I bought some new maglites(3Dcell variety) last summer, and they are like spot lights. I could not believe the distance the beam reaches and how bright it is. I like the smaller lights for inside and close in work. I might try one of these. Great Vid.
Howdy, newyear greetings. Nice light that Fenix but here in Finland I don´t think we get it, but we get the Leatherman sr2. Acctually them all and it´s a really good light too. I was just wondering will you be testing the Leaterman light, it would be interesting to compare. Thank´s for good reviews
nite core is made in china.they are verry good lites(I have 3).the drawback is you have to take up warrenty issues with the main office in china, but that goes pretty smoothly.just time consuming.the flashlite i really like is the olite warrior.$100 but it kicks ass, better than the fenix tk-11
NiteCore, Olight, MicroFire, Wolf Eyes, etc...etc, all made in China ! Good stuff, but unfortunately it's so many jobs lost in our countries for our people.
well if you want distance in a beam, the 'old' surefire and streamlight xenon lights are superior. of course burn time sucks, and you have to change bulbs. but if it is a gun mount where you only use it monetarily with a pressure switch you should be good.
Yes, but SureFire make nowadays very good LED lights. Just wait for trying the Optimus nad Invictus new models, it seems to be real killers. I don't say that to bash Fenix, I have several of this brand, PD30, LD20..., and I LOVE Fenix, but SF still is the Rolls&Royce, the high-end of the hand sized flashlights. If you search some real GRRREAAAT power lights, go to the Polarion-USA web-site, they sell a 5300 lum, 2hr runtime and just 12' length flashlight !!!
The Helios PF50/PH50 - the only difference is with a handle for one and a straight body, wich allow to be weapon mounted, for the other one - is sold for something like 2300$. But I agree it's really somtehing you buy only if you really need an exceptional illuminating power AND a great reliability.
I've been useing dual AA Battery Mag lights for a long time. i never have to tap them, but the bulbs die -All The Time-, The halo's dont usually bother me, but i have a Single AA LED as well, its a cheap one i think, i have to tap it a lot, however when it works it is brighter, and easyer to activate.
wth... are u doing like intense stealthy military jobs? You know a lot about things that I would normally not even notice! Great vid, very informative.
be careful when selecting a light.don't think that the rechargeable(14300)aa batteries will work in a lite that requires regular aa batteries, the rechargeable ones will fry the lite.and the standard ones wont work good.i chose rechargeable ones(aa and 123's)and went from there.
Anything from Inova lights would be a good choice in my opinion. Electronically controlled with a steady output of light until the batteries die. The Lithium 123 photo batteries are abit expensive, But the x03 which is my model of choice from Inova 250 feet beam projection, 2.5 mile signal visibility And it comes in at 5.8 ounces with a 5.8 watt LED.
Good video once again. I love my Fenix LD10 which is the same but only uses 1 AA bat. The smaller size fits in the pocket a bit better. I still here people talking about how their mag lights are so great and it makes me laugh.
The G3 is incandescent for one, as nutnfancy would probably ask "where is your 8trak?"
the next problem with it is the fact that it uses CR123A batteries. In most cases if you buy those batteries in say Canadian tire or a hardware store you'll spend $10-$15 on a single battery. I'm lucky to have a place that sells them after tax for around $7. I recommend you go with the L2D nutnfancy used here. I like the fact that it uses cheaper batteries that are more widely available.
Just like some "geeks" I know(not putting them down they just like computers like me). A teacher or maybe it was leo laporte who said that don't just go out and buy the bargain deal because many companies will mess with this specification or this little thing there to make it cheaper and it just won't run as well as the one you pay a little more for.
A buddy of mine and me recently started to do backpacking trips and I realized that I have to get some better lighting devices.
Since I was thinking if I should spend my money on a high value head lamp or a handheld light.
With that great fenix system (especially the headband) I can have my cake and eat it. It gives me all advantages of an handheld PLUS of a headmounted light. So I don't need two devices to carry and save weight and room!
1. Gerber infinity. I have two. One is on my keychain- been there for 3 or so years. Great runtime- 100 hours. I usually keep one in my kit- can attach it to your hat too.
2. Rayovac 3 watt. So far a very reliable light for 25 bucks. Have had it for a year.
3. Surefire G2 LED model. As a weapons light attached to my AK.
I had a nitize led replacement for a AA mag. They totally suck, unreliable, and only worked for 2 months.
Again i find that you have done your homework...lol....i read some info on the fenix light and i really like it alot over my Surefire...thanks for the great info that you give to everyone!!! Keep up the good work
Nice video, i have tried several types of lights, the main reason, at the time i was a maint. supervisor on night shift, and had to have something that i could carry easily. I ended up getting a Surefire G3-nitrolon, of course this was just in my opinion a good light when i bought it.
I concur. I'm buying a second TK10 to go on my home defense shotgun. I've dropped it in two feet of snow, puddles, kicked it, dropped it in the mud and after 5 months of abuse I would still trust it as my primary light for my every day carry, my outdoor carry, work carry, and all around carry light. TK10's rock.
I don't really get the difference between my $4 LED flashlight with 1 AA battery and the L2D. What about reviewing monoculars, Zeiss are also too expensive, as Surefire is. Thanks for taking your time for the review.
Thank you very much! Love the vids. Nice to hear your insights as a USER of the products. I know you don't want to thrash all your blades, but keep it up. Much appreciated. Seeing what I consider buying in real use is invaluable.
I recently visited the CREE website They are touting new LED at 161 Lumen per watt but that level of effecency will not be in production LED for 2 or 3 years. BUT when it does That same 180 lumen L2D/ 2aa light will be putting out over 400 lumen!!! so if your impressed now hold on there is more to come
PS liked your Kel Tec PF-9 review soooo much I just went out and got one today.
Ive owned that exact same model "L2D Q5" for about 6 months and can honestly say nutnfancy is telling it like it is. Great light , never fails to impress. the only feature lacking is a way to focus the beam into a tight spotlight.Apart from that its awesome .
should i dump my old surefire e2e xenon? , i think not especially if they were expensive

@mafundzalo No, but why should it. One is a 3-cell, the other is a 2-cell.
With two Energizer lithium primary AA's, one should get at least 48 hours on low with L2D (or LD20 successors)

NUTNFANCY i wanted to buy either a LD20 or a LED Lenser P7. which one would you recommend, from what I've been seeing the Lenser looks like it can throw the light much further. But its not regulated and you cant use Nimh batteries...
mj3610 2 years ago
I hear your "cheapo" light failure is from even slightly gunky threads. Apparently, the tail switch somehow runs through the un-coated battery tube threads. The tolerance is supposedly very close, and the cheaper manufacturing doesn't come up to that standard. Just passing on what I read, you may have to constantly clean the threads and screw the tail on really tight.

Camping isn't just something that I do on weekends once in a while, it's a way of life.
I am a traveler.
Lighting is a major thing for me.
I would like to recommend the maglight double A, LED flashlight. It's the best 24 bucks you'll ever spend. I swear by mine. I have two, bye the way.
I would also recommend the Ray-o-vac "Hybrid" rechargeable bateries.

You've inspired me to grab one of these babies to put on my new G19 which will go great for my POU which is late nights in the woods messing around in creeks and canals. get a fenix if you plan on seriously using it. Maglites are alright, but they're way over-rated.
thefirespectrum 2 years ago
i know surefire are a alot pricey but, some people dont need or want all that applications, they just want one light mode. lets not break on surefire now without them you wont have other companies making similar high end lights because they started all this.
reneir0492 2 years ago
I have to omitt that I am a big Surefire fan. However, I have been rethinking about the whole Surefire thing. Surefire is over priced and over rated to a degree and it is getting bigger. I am looking get a different light. I am starting to look at the Fenix more. Probably next month I am going to get one. The price is a lot smalled then a Surefire.
davesantos1 2 years ago 4

The only thing I can see going bad with a smaller light is that if your a police officer for instance, you may have/want to use your light as a melee weapon. A smaller light is pretty much useless to this point.
But hey, it's all about what you plan or could have to use it for.

My first LED light was cheap and from wallmart and turned me off them until a friends showed me a good one

what is the best cheap light out there? or what is the best and cheapest fenix light?
redsoxnation32 2 years ago
I am ordering the L2D for My EDC and BOB so that I can get a better light that runs on a easy to find battery. Sometimes the massive power of a CR123A flashlight is a negative because of the price of batteries. Retail they can run for $10/CR123A battery. There is a store in my town that sells them for about $7 after tax. I'm working on getting the L2D because it leaves me with one battery type for my Flashlight and portable radio in my BOB. One Battery type is best for a BOB
rooftopeagle 2 years ago
Google "fenix-store" and you'll find the store. The cheapest one I found was the E01 but it is not very powerful though it only costs $15 + Shipping. I'd go with the one nutnfancy used in this video the L2D. It's just over $50 but well worth the extra money. Quality and good light. The E01 uses an older model of LED and the L2D uses Cree 7090 XR-E LED which IMO is far superior.

gstrader73 3 years ago
nite core is made in china.they are verry good lites(I have 3).the drawback is you have to take up warrenty issues with the main office in china, but that goes pretty smoothly.just time consuming.the flashlite i really like is the olite warrior.$100 but it kicks ass, better than the fenix tk-11
mrbeligos 3 years ago
NiteCore, Olight, MicroFire, Wolf Eyes, etc...etc, all made in China ! Good stuff, but unfortunately it's so many jobs lost in our countries for our people.
argus91 3 years ago
well if you want distance in a beam, the 'old' surefire and streamlight xenon lights are superior. of course burn time sucks, and you have to change bulbs. but if it is a gun mount where you only use it monetarily with a pressure switch you should be good.
blackhatch46 3 years ago
those 2 brands are stone age things...... compaired to the led ones!
mrbeligos 3 years ago
Yes, but SureFire make nowadays very good LED lights. Just wait for trying the Optimus nad Invictus new models, it seems to be real killers. I don't say that to bash Fenix, I have several of this brand, PD30, LD20..., and I LOVE Fenix, but SF still is the Rolls&Royce, the high-end of the hand sized flashlights. If you search some real GRRREAAAT power lights, go to the Polarion-USA web-site, they sell a 5300 lum, 2hr runtime and just 12' length flashlight !!!

hey nutnfancy how about the surefire g3?
Cos93 3 years ago

Hey, nutnfancy, thanks for that great vid again!
So I don't need two devices to carry and save weight and room!
yxvq 3 years ago
Thanks for the awesome video as usual.
For my systems I like:
