urg i was going to play this song but we got it a month before school ended so the next year we came back and the grade below that merges into the band was way worse than we were last year so now we arent playing it because our band director doesnt think they would be good enough. :(
@oddvidios Screw off infidel why bring race/ethnicity into music that pisses me off! you obviously don't understand why the world hates America do you? it's cause of white trash like you enjoy the music and don't hate.
We played this one year for concert band and man, our director got nervous on the second movement and started conducting extraordinarily fast. It was horrendous D:
Oh god i'm a tuba player, And i was fortunate enough to be able to meet Jan Van der Roost And do a clinic with him and my high school ensemble. He is a truly amazing composer. We were the only clinic group that he didnt have to stop while playing to give us pointers. It was absolutely enthralling.
@countryrules64 My man!!! yea i play bass clarinet too and i love this piece. yea its is pretty easy, but my director likes to push the fourth movement ALOT. the faster it goes, the more fun it is, says he. oh well haha.
that how i know mah boys from Texas are on Youtube, when they say BEAST!
i actually dont even go to a middle school but i can tell where ya'll comin from. mah high school is playin this for UIL too, along with Elegy by John Barnes Chance and Domingo Ortega.
Too bad i can't go. Tuba owns man, midget tubas too XD
oh crap.. i sent the wrong comment.. oh well haha I was going to say are there any other people from arroyo on this thing??!! haha but i think its kinda easy.... anyway I like this song its interesting
well the only hispanic dude flute there, i think in total there are only 3 hispanic flutes in general, its like the asian students are trying to keep us down (no racism, just my 2 Cents lol)
I'm playing all 4 movements for a UIL competition this year for Wind Ensemble. Its really cool. I play 1st French Horn and its pretty G. LOL, in the 3rd movement I have a little solo so wish me luck!
I played this in the 7th grade as a 2nd flute, in the 4th chair in the front row! I can't believe my teacher holds me back intentionally. I don't know what he has against me. I never did anything to him...
I agree with noprah in his analysis. However Van Der Roost's melodicism and capturing of of the grittiness or "dance style" of the genre is effective. If you view these movements as snap shots rather than movements with connected material, it is a beautiful piece. Movement #3 is quite lovely.

He's composed better. Although Roost is known for composing in clearly-delineated sections displaying sudden changes in mood, texture, and tempo, there is little thematic unity present in any of these movements. Throughout, Roost presents wonderful musical ideas but fails to develop any of them to their full potential.
