  • Oh god i'm a tuba player, And i was fortunate enough to be able to meet Jan Van der Roost And do a clinic with him and my high school ensemble. He is a truly amazing composer. We were the only clinic group that he didnt have to stop while playing to give us pointers. It was absolutely enthralling.

  • I played trombone in this for MBDA All State Honor Band! (and the time when we actually performed it was the only time none of our mutes fell out!)

  • @MysteryAndroclese401 I think with the newest mutes there is no problem. My Dennis Wick Mute do not fall out...

  • io ho suanato con lui .. e ha diretto gigue e pavane .... davvero bravo

  • I had a lot of fun playing this in my college band this semester. Really easy.

  • Wow, Really? Are you in Mr. Hollands band?

  • @countryrules64 My man!!! yea i play bass clarinet too and i love this piece. yea its is pretty easy, but my director likes to push the fourth movement ALOT. the faster it goes, the more fun it is, says he. oh well haha.

  • I was in a clarinet ensemble in sixth grade and we played this song. anyone by some chance have the music they could send me? pm me.

  • Wow. My band last year didn't play this song this good. I kinda doubt we did.

  • man this brings me back to middle school

  • We played this song with about 6 clarinets in swiss army music, 3xB,es, bass, basset, very nice piece

  • i will never forget this song..

i had a sax solo in this song my senior year of high school,(istead of oboe it was sax )

am sure as hell we didnt play it this good,

but its all that passion and hard work we put into it that makes this piece so special..

  • lol same here. I played the tamborine!

    :P

  • @ForgetingTheJew that's actually an English Horn playing that solo.

  • @bandgeek630 rele thats amazing he has a beautiful tone

  • I dont understand. Why have the baton and not really use it?

  • Because he's Jan Van Der Roost and he can do that =P

  • Well that explains everything. ;-)

  • We played this song in our music school for a CD. It was realy funny!!

  • i played this few years ago in belgium, jan van der roost was conducting too. it's really fun to play indeed and its not hard at all.

  • i got to meet jan van der roost=D

im a 9th grader in high school and we had song composed by maestro van der roost and he came and conducted it.

its titled "dances of innocence" *i might have spelt that wrong* its being published febuary 2009

  • this is a good piece. we got to play it for our concert too. is fun. btw, i'm dont know anyone here...

  • hey this song is cool...our high school district honor band is playing this song..pretty tough tho

  • hey my district honor band is playing this too, which is your district? im one of the male flutes in the El Monte District Honor Band

  • ohh the same one =]..im one of the trombones

  • really? how many of you guys are there? i only know two, Peter and Juan, Peters cool and i hate Juan lol

btw im the Hispanic Flute so no confusion there ahahahaha

  • there are seven of us lol...im also one of the only hispanics...there is only one hispanic flute?!

  • haha you guys are funny, btw i'm one of the trumpets... i like the walt whitman overture better though.

  • its cool but it was kinda tough though, i think it might be the toughest piece we have no?

  • ha

well the only hispanic dude flute there, i think in total there are only 3 hispanic flutes in general, its like the asian students are trying to keep us down (no racism, just my 2 Cents lol)

  • ehh it is kinda true though..a good chunk of honor band are asian...nothing really bad with it though

  • no its not bad, in fact its good because they always get yelled at while we are in the clear, hehehehehe

  • haha thats true..did you go on thur?

  • yeah havent missed one yet, wouldnt wanna get yelled at haha

  • yeah lol..hey what grade are you in?

  • senior bro, haha you?

  • fashiz. i like the Fourth movement best. my conducter had replaced tancredi with this song for performance evaluation

  • I'm playing all 4 movements for a UIL competition this year for Wind Ensemble. Its really cool. I play 1st French Horn and its pretty G. LOL, in the 3rd movement I have a little solo so wish me luck!

  • holy crap same here

    lol

  • very well recorded and a marvellous orchestra. this clip helped me and my orchestra a lot in preparation of our concert. 5 stars ofc!

  • how fun! i played the bassoon part in seventh grade!!! I think we got first in texas that year. or second?

  • I love this piece! =] I played the piccolo part in my 8th grade year, it was amazing.

  • Deel 4 voor altsaxofoon is lastig maar echt heel leuk :D

  • ik speel dit stuk ook k vind het egt een mooi stuk

  • I played this in the 7th grade as a 2nd flute, in the 4th chair in the front row! I can't believe my teacher holds me back intentionally. I don't know what he has against me. I never did anything to him...

  • zeer mooi stuk, vooral de afwisseling met mute-trompet

  • we played this for our uil competition in 8th grade band

  • ha...wow, can you imagine if this were a sight reading piece at a festival?

  • that would be real hard.

  • All the repeats and little weird sections would completely throw everyone off. And i mean totally and completely haha.

  • I'd die.

  • I agree with noprah in his analysis. However Van Der Roost's melodicism and capturing of of the grittiness or "dance style" of the genre is effective. If you view these movements as snap shots rather than movements with connected material, it is a beautiful piece. Movement #3 is quite lovely.

  • playing this in my concert band. very long and interesting song.

  • DUDE!!

    me 2

and i sit next to you

  • Long? I don't know what you're used to, but it's 4 almost ridiculously short movements.

  • Try Mahler Symphony 2 (or any of his symphonies) if you want long. This is extremely short.

  • I played this at southwest honor band. instead of saying "Hoi" at the end, me and the guy next to me said "Ole!"

  • Way to be culturally sensitive.

  • He's composed better. Although Roost is known for composing in clearly-delineated sections displaying sudden changes in mood, texture, and tempo, there is little thematic unity present in any of these movements. Throughout, Roost presents wonderful musical ideas but fails to develop any of them to their full potential.

  • I remember playing this in HS for All-District Band. Rikidum is a very typical Jan van der Roost piece. Also played Puszta and one of his marches Arsenal.
