  • " Will you fucking take my senior picture already?!!! Is this what $5.00 senior pictures get you???! "

  • Why oh why do people get the idea that it is quite clever to play music at the same time they are trying to tell you something. I was really interested in what the guy had to say, but that music was so damned irritating I could not concentrate on what was being said. Please! next time either play music or talk, but not at the same time. The videos would be excellent value apart from that.

  • Oh man I hate the music, it's too loud and useless! "Let's all have a positive learning experience!" Like a god damn TV Shop commercial, come on! Why? Well, I want to thank you for all the information in the video series anyway.

  • Very well done. I found this very educational and helpful..Thank you!

  • No good in 240p ...

  • Wow, digital photography 101, and your video quality sucks!

  • Great video, thanks for the upload.

  • these videos are helpful.

  • ...thats a 90 degree angle hahahaha

  • the intro song reminds me of nigahiga

  • Never post instructional videos about photography in 240p.

  • @gotrottin It was posted in 2007 before there was any other option. I'll try to find a time machine to fix things. :)

  • @snapfactory is it reposted somewhere?

  • @gotrottin ROFL

  • @gotrottin moron

  • @gotrottin good point - but don't lose your temper ...

  • Great video, lots of info, Thanks for taking the time to do this. You're awesome.

  • lose the music.

  • why the key light is f/ 10 and the fill-light is 9? why not the other way around? please explain..

    Thanks

  • my try

  • Sebentien beeples dounght unberdand flashee bikture bocks. Bress butteon gud!!!

  • Quick question for outdoor metering, whats the different between using light meter and the spot metering on ur camera? Why do we need to purchase a light meter for spot metering? Doesn't the camera itself have a built-in metering?

    Thank you

  • this videos are not the basic of photography for entry level dslr. why in earth do i care about light metering whereas i don't know what ISO is :/

  • @poorna61 this isn't a beginner course! If that's what you wanna learn, lookup Basics of photography. This was a video on light meters cuz that was the question sent in to him.

  • @SunfireGTX25 as the episode started with one i tot it might be for beginner .thanks fr ur reply anyway.

  • Megan , you are useless.

But a lot of fun (=

  • Megan , you are useless.

  • @00mrmonster

She needs to work on those abs too

  • Awesome very helpful

  • using light meter in studio photography

  • Can Mark, or anyone tell me why it's important to set your shutter speed on your light meter when using studio strobes? I was under the impression that shutter speed, you're camera's sync speed and under, will have no effect on your image. And going only slower will boost ambient, true. But in studio setting, you're generally not going for ambient, as you would, say, outside. Kindly clear that up please, thank you in advance.

  • HI, just wanted to ask you if I have to set white balance if using Light meter ? Thanks.

  • It is driving me nuts, I can not figure out how to get a correct fstop reading. I am using a 580 mounted flash with a diffuser, and a regular light or modeling light. Why will it let me change the shutter , but not give me a normal aperture?

  • @lisabisa27 Change it to Manual mode..

  • Mr. Wallace, my apologies - I am using your videos to promote my website. You will love it also! ivotography :)

  • do you ever shoot outside?

any tips on how to get vivid colors of the landscape

  • @tic0s You can do that in post processing..

  • GREAT!! VIDEOS

  • GREAT!!

  • ISO. eye, es, oh.......... say it slowly, EYEEE ESSS OHHH. not eyeso

  • @WoodyVagina: Would you pronounce SNAFU "es en ay ef yu"? How about FUBAR? "Ef yu be ay ar"?

"ISO" is an acronym, and it's perfectly acceptable to pronounce it as a word. Sounding out the initials is also correct, but not exclusively so.

  • Thank you Mark. I bought my sekonic 358 3 years ago. After watching this video, I finally know how to use my light meter properly. Thanks again. Your videos are very helpful and informative. Thanks.

  • isnt that a 90 degree angle...

  • i agree to those who sent negative comment.your videos are great tutorials but on this episode, the music background is too loud and your voice seems distorted.i guess i has something to do with the technical settings

  • brillient. explained so well love the diagrams at the beguinning makes it so easy to understand...... thanks!!!! its been a great help

  • Great information, but the background music was intrusive.

  • Interesting clip, I was recently reading about something similar on thephotographyclinic (.) com

  • awesome tutorials :)

  • What mode do i use when taking pics of people outside with flash??

  • whats name of the guy from BRAVEHEARD

    mark Wallis?

  • Very good and dynamic tips .... no waste

  • @ 1:00 isn't that a 90 degree angle? Great vid btw.

  • I really enjoy your videos they are very helpful and informative- one small request if possible: can u turn the music down a bit. It is a bit distracting and makes it hard to listen to your instructions/advice because of the volume of the music- thanks keep up the good work. p.s is Meagan single?

  • I use 2 Elinchorm 200W softboxes a Canon 5DMKII with a Canon 24-70 2.8 L USM lens. When i measure the light, let's say F8 in the studio my photo's get over exposed, how come?

I loved the presentation and will continue to watch more of this.

    With kind regards,

    Gino,

    The Netherlands,

  • These videos are SO cool!

Thank you Mark! I wanna hug you! :)

  • hi how do i use the light meter out side for example in the park for a wedding

  • Hai, i love you video´s, i make art photography, check me out!!!!! i subbed you!!! please comment my work!! Thank you very much! Love

  • Thanks for the amazing videos!

  • The new innovative product : the Luminette from lucimed

    Medical deceive Recommended

  • Thanks, this video helped me big time. Ace

  • I just signed up for this...and am already loving it. Even after being an advanced photographer (as an amateur), I've already learned more than I would have on my own....of course, I'm coming into this late. :) But thanks!

  • To the people who mixed/made this video: Please turn down the distracting music in this video. Classic example of what not to do in an instructional video re: sound. I found it hard to concentrate on what appeared to be good info. being shared with viewers. But, I had to listen to this video three times to hear everything.

  • Thanks, very clear.

  • This was really helpful to me, but am still having trouble finding my cameras sync speed, can anyone help me with this? Its a nikon D90....

  • @tatsel589 Nikon D90 has 1/200th of a second sync speed.

  • @tatsel589 You can also crank it up more than 1/200th if you set your camera in "auto FP mode" but I think you will need proper flash.

  • thanks u so much !!!!!!!! u are great !!!

  • Just quick question, where sekonic light meters like the L358 made from?

  • I want to buy one of this and im just wondering if this light meter is compatible with elinchrom D-lite it for wireless triggering?.

  • @rustynasty143 No; the wireless module is only designed to work with the PocketWizard system (and you need to make sure you have the right module -- different countries use different frequencies). To use the Elinchrom wireless system, you'd need to connect a Skyport transmitter to the meter using the PC sync cable socket. The transmitter that comes with the DLite kits is hot-shoe only, so you'd need a hotshoe adapter (or you can purchase one of the other Skyport transmitters).

  • Thank you so much. Top rate!

  • What's up with the enoying music? So irritating!

  • The one thing that needs to be added is you need to have a Transmitter module for the L-358 installed to get 4 different meter settings. Without it there are only 3 settings. Very helpful.

  • Really helpful, espcially as I have that meter. Hadn't used that retracting mode on the lumisphere.

  • What if I want to choose the F.stop for depth of field reasons? Anyone?

  • good job Megan!

  • the music gets old for an otherwise nice tutorial. i didnt finish watching this

  • photographygenius . net

  • The instruction was good. Thanks. But, my one man's opinion about the music is that it reminded me of the sort that you hear during video games from the 90's.

  • Great videos. But the music over the top is annoying.

  • Great video.... it answered the question I had after seeing Episode 1. Hmmm, what question will be answered in #3? Thank you - and what's everyone complaining about the music? I didn't even notice it which is how it should be, I guess.

  • ha ha....that music needs to go, but why beat a dead horse. Great tutorial! informative and easy to understand. I've also seen other tutorials by Mark. I've learned more in those few tutorials then I have at some photography schools. thank you!

  • Great Video.

BUT dude put some trousers on..haaa

  • great tutorial! probably the best one on metering i've come across so far on youtube.

but, for the record, you don't need to have pocket wizards or the RT32 module for wireless metering. as long as you have any type of wireless triggering system you can just connect the transmitter to the x sync on your meter and you're all set. i do acknowledge that it is much more convenient not to have all that attached, but compare that to the steep cost of pw's and a special meter and/or module.

  • Nice video, informative. Megan seams like a real spark plug.

  • Very informative.

  • Funny - I didn't even notice the music until you mentioned it.

  • That's a great background song! What's the name of it? Goes along very well with your vid. Makes it sound really professional. Luv it , luvit, luvvvvit!

  • At least a usefull video about lightmetering.

    Thanx !

    Background music is anoing...

  • very useful.

  • Not only is the music bad but it seems to get even louder as the video goes along

  • The music (aka noise) is really annoying. I'd like to watch more videos but with that noise...forget it.

  • lol WOW that was pretty cool

  • yes the music is rather LOUD plus annoying

    but a great vid

  • Love the L358 meter.

  • Great, I also want to know, how to use two flash using nikon d 60

  • very informative video, thanks!

  • hej, thanks a lot, but pleeaaaase, turn the "ambient" music down, it's hard to understand what you're saying...

  • I agree about the bloody music. What is this mania for inviting a band to rehearse in the room next door when they're TRYIN' TO MAKE A MOVIE IN HERE. (Clueless)

  • Very helpful, coz im just starting in studio photography and sometimes im still dumbfounded with the light settings and now with your tutorial video it help me to understand how the studio lighting work thanks very much.

  • dude, the vids are so helpful. but the music is sooo annoying and too loud. its hard to hear you

  • Agreed

The music is a MAJOR distraction to the content being spoken

  • and if you don't use strobes but use modeling lights, do oyu use the first mode on light meter, ambient?

  • Yes, use ambient mode.

  • no you dont meter the modeling light

  • Great meter tutorial -- looking forward to checking out your other videos. Thank you for posting!

  • Thank you guys so much! Keep up the great work and looking forward to see more videos from you guys!

  • you guys are doing such a great job - please keep it up!

  • Great job with the videos. You can buy all the things he is showing on our CinemaGadgets site

  • he is so calm & detailed.

  • Outstanding..!

  • that was pretty helpful, thanks

  • You have to buy RT32 for Sekonic L-358 if you're gonna use the wireless thingy :( expensive!

  • very informative thank you for creating this video!

  • Tru dat !

  • One of the most common human error... Rotate the sensor to the opposite direction from the lighting source, that is how light meter get proper readings.

Funny everyone don't go down that direction.

  • Sounds like you are still talking about reflective metering. Light meters are for incident metering which measures the light coming TOWARDS the subject. Light meters can also do reflective metering for subjects at a distance.

  • Very helpful, thanks for the clear explanations. I'm a beginning photography hobbyist, and I learned a lot of useful stuff about lighting from your videos. I'll catch your other videos as well.

    BTW, I'm a Megan fan too. c",)

  • thanks for the video. and ignore those flamer.

  • Ya instead of saying set them accordingly you should make a more in depth video about what do do with the flash output setting, you camera settings, and meter setting when you have more than one flash.

  • real nice informative video ....i think the music goes with the style of video that is being created to inform us novices..keep it up ...lol it does sound a bit loud ,but we get the points.

  • lol - well said. I'll try harder to suck less in the future. I very much agree with you about the music, I've toned it down in more recent videos. Thanks for your feedback. :)

  • you are right. bgm is really distracting.

this is great instruction. but music ruins almost everything. who wana listen to music now?

  • Mark could you explain if your meter read F8 when aimed at the camera. But F10 when aimed at the key light, and F9 when aimed at the fill light, what do you do to get them all to read F8? Or is that necessary?

  • great vid thx!

    also, megan is cute!

  • I like how he always recommends the most expensive equipment that no amateur would need to get.

  • Actually he recommends practical & reliable gear which is largely essential to the techniques being taught in the video.

  • Thanks. That was well put together and very useful.

  • excellent viedo :}

    thanks

  • I ask myself what is the use of a light meter while you are in studio. I mean, with a little of experience you will set your aperture, and after 2 or 3 tests... you will have the optimal values for your camera (digital). I agree that the light meter is useful for non digital cameras. Can someone tell me if I'm lost with what I'm saying?

    thanks!

  • Good 101 basic stuff. Suggest to try a Sekonic L-758DR @ street-$ 450-500 or older version- used. I shot Med format for 25 years, would have been lost without 2 dependable meters (1 as backup). What a luxury to use a D-300 compared to those days of manual everything. Recommend book "Understand Exposure" as well.

  • Pretty much explained it all, Thanx!!!!!!!!

  • Great video! Great quality, great personality in front of camera, feels natural.

Definitely going to check out other videos, this one helped me to figure out my 358 more.

  • Excellent production values and well presented. But I have to say, Mark: the shorts are a bit dodgy, mate...

  • LOL!! I think it was about 115 degrees out when we made that video. And those pockets are great for lens caps, meters, etc. :-)

  • @snapfactory functionality always trumps fashion! haha

  • This is really good stuff. You guys should do DVDs. I'd buy one.

  • shhhhhhh. Don't tell someone giving it away for free to start charging, they might take you up on it. Let 'em post 50 or 60 free vids first ;)

  • Thank you

  • megan is also mute

  • My light meter is the Gossen Luna-Pro Digital F. Is a good one that I can keep it with me? My camera is a Nikon D200 and flashes.

  • Very good tutorial but the soundtrack is too loud

  • I agree. We fixed the sound in later episodes. :)

  • Hey! This is info is awesome! I take pictures and the lighting is so hard. I need more than a light meter, I need a professional photographer to take all my shots! hahahah

Great video... I will invest in a light metering. We are getting a huge bonus this year. Here I come B&HPhoto! hahhaha

  • Awesome video. Thanks.

  • this was awesome, thanks for the clear info on the light meter. I was just about to get the 358 before I saw this, now I def will :)

  • Megan is a hottie :P

  • Your video is great I was able to learn more about a light meter with your video than reading my manual for my L-758DR. It may be too much but it would be nice to know how to profile a light meter because that is what I am working on now.

  • I like your style of tutorials. However, you missed the boat on two very important factors.

1: You never stated how hot each light was set at before you took a reading. As in, if you had a 300 w/s key light to meter, where is it set before you meter?

2: If you want to set your aperture first, to give control of depth of field, how do you then set your lights?

  • Great video! My question is... once u do the individual meterings for each strobe, how did u come up with an F9? You said your key was F10 and the fill was F9...what made u choose F9 as the aptr for the camera?

  • Thanks! This helps me alot!!!

  • thanks for the video...ive learn a great deal about lighting

  • great vid, thanks

  • Nice videos. They are produced great and contain some nice information. My only issue with this one was that the ambient soundtrack in the background was distracting in that it was a touch too loud ...

  • "My only issue with this one was that the ambient soundtrack in the background was distracting in that it was a touch too loud ... " - yep, I agree. We've fixed this in more recent episodes.
