I was based in Germany in the 1980's, friendly treated me as a brother, I'm Flemish-American, gave us more respect than in our own country. Our country has fallen into ignorance and laziness. Where did you get your info from? I heard that the Volksgren's were formed after 1944 after some staggering defeats. How does this make them an elite unit? I will not act like I know what these brave men felt while they were on the field. But I will assume it was hell on earth. These men deserve our respect for even though they were scared and cold and miserable, they stood by each other and fought bravely for their country. Someone once told me war was like soccer "plan it well and you'll win" and that was utter bullshit. It is depressing to see my generation losing respect for these men who lost their lives for their country.

Anyways, Volks (people) grenadiers (soldiers/units) were made at the end of the war. Due to a shortage of soldiers, old men (including veterans or those thought to be unfit to fight) and young men were banded together into regiments, This was the poorly trained, and strictly defensive volksgrenadiers.

I'm not an expert at history but I thought volksgrenadiers consisted of veterans and those who were once considered unfit for service. It was used to get in much needed manpower so company of heroes isn't completely inaccurate.

Many of them were just boys... fighting for their country... i commend each and every one of those soldiers for their bravery. It wasn't their fault Hitler was a maniac, many of these guys dying not knowing the outcome - only that they fought for their country, that they loved so much...
