"The enormous gap between what US leaders do in the world and what Americans think their leaders are doing is one of the great propaganda accomplishments of the dominant political mythology." - Michael Parenti
It's a bit bloody ironic that people are commenting on a clip of a movie they saw on YouTube, saying "turn off your tv" and then referencing other movies to go and watch.
You dress like a Tube, You eat like a Tube, You raise your children like a tube, you even Think like a Tube. This is mass Madness you Maniacs, in God's name you people are the real thing, we are the illusion.
Just go to your local mall look around and witness it for yourself. Then you will begin to understand the real meaning to this.
i can't believe it has been 34 years since this movie was made and that the people haven't learned anything form it. nowadays it is even getting worse...
as edward burke said it long time ago - those who don't know history are destined to repeat it.
After watching the full movie, I can report that it is a satire of the television zoo, about the practices of the corporate controlled television industry, as alluded to by Beale in his rants, and demonstrated by the storyline with UBS executives. A key scene is when the fired executive tells his mistress colleague who is an executive how inhuman she has become, which Beale alludes to.
The movie has little to do with the subject matter of Beale's rants, rather the circumstances of him being encouraged to rant, mainly "UBS" and its competition for ratings and market share. Beale is a ratings champion and he's kept on. What he says has populist appeal - the chanting, class struggle, etc - but it is all a gimmick to make money.
What Beale is referring to we see in living examples such as Rupert Murdoch, and his Fox "news", seedy business practices that let nonsense on the airways for profits, or the Conan/Leno affair. Its a backlash against the TV industry, who are immune since they control the message. In the movie, Beale himself is the product of profit seeking executives, who put market share above journalistic integrity or ethics, the monster he alludes to, which is a bit of self referential irony.
By watching the tube and thinking this was real, that the world was this way, you would be guilty of doing what Beale says we ought not to be doing, group think and bandwagon mentality. What he says has some merit, but the movie is much deeper than that.
Considering that this movie is at least partially about how media can easily co-opt genuine anti-establishment sentiment, it's quite ironic to find a youtube comment that reads "fuck the NWO"
He was rite on point. Stop being brainwashed by propaganda media. There isn't a law stating that they have to tell you the truth. They have da freedom to tell you whatever da FUCK they want to. The truth lies within yourself your conscience. Research everything even your own thoughts. Be easy folks.
@nycresistance It's sad. I'm part of it and I feel powerless to stop it, like an addiction. We started getting all of our information from tv and internet and now the whole world is delusional. It's insane.
CHEMRISK - a research company hired by the Corn Refiners Association has recently taken down it's YouTube channel.
The removal was in response to negative public perception resulting from the discovery of dangerous levels of MERCURY in HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. Apparently it has become a liability to defend the sweetener.

This segment of the movie was actually filmed in Canada. I can't remember why. I guess the movie studio couldn't locate an appropriate set fast enough so they sent Peter Finch and a camera crew to Vancouver BC(?) to shoot the "Beale Show" segments
This single clip should be required viewing for anyone who has worked in broadcasting. Even more true today than it was in 1976. This scene alone is one of the best performances in the history of films. Well-deserved honors for Paddy Chayefsky and Peter Finch that younger generations can still watch this and hopefully learn from.
Who in their right mind would think that any tv show has some grasp in reality?? TV is an illusion in the same way that pulp fiction, fairy tales, Hemmingway, Cyrano de Bergerac and Debbie Does Dallas are "illusions"..;their souces for diversion, not fact based interpretations of reality. And while sooo many people don't read books or papers, they do research info when info is needed. That 's why libraries exist and encyclopedias are so popular. The flick is too absolute in its statement.
While there are many points of truth in this rant, there is also information that furthers the plot of the movie woven into the monologue. As for the applause, it's for comedic effect. Some people don't realize that this movie is a dark comedy. I think that gets lost 30 years later because so many things suggested in the movie have become reality in regards to network television programming.
The applause at end just goes to show that television producers will use the old applause sign for anything. It's like a gratification version of the laugh track.
This movie is the friggin' truth. I know I've started watching less T.V. because of it and, believe it or not, it's strengthened my faith in God. The tube will not rule my life!
Yes, a great film nominated, but losing to Rcoky that year for Best Picture. A truly great film. I have owned it for 2 decades. Still works, every time. same old same old.
I am going to have to do the same. I have sent clips of it to ppl I know and hope that care. I hope I can find the movie somewhere online for purchase.
The only thing I didn't like about this scene was Beal's acting like he was under some kind of hypnotic power when he faints at the end which made it seem like he was under the influence of some other "power" which made him say the things he did but also made him to be less credible than what he was saying actually was. One of the most important and true scenes of all time.

You are right, the movie was rubbish but some scenes in it were excellent. This could be trimmed down even more to capture the most salient points without the theatrics which detract.
