I don't know if there's a bigger Whitney fan then me, but you're right. This is around the time she started to sing in a lower register. Sure, it could have been a consequence of smoking (she's still a smoker), drugs, or the natural changes in the voice as it ages, but there was a change. Not necessarily for the worse, because I like her voice regardless. But, like you, I noticed a change too. And even Whitney will admit she was heavy into her habit at this time.
