i hate this whole pitbull debate....any dog can be a mean dog. Your dog is a good dog because you give him some actual leadership. That's all a dog wants if leadership and appropriately meted out affection. But pits are strong and smart and are particularly devastating when a bad person get ahold of them.

In fairness, there are a lot of strong, fast, smart dogs out there.  It shouldn't be held against them any more than we would discriminate against human bodybuilders. We just need to make sure that we don't sit back and let bad situations stew and do nothing. My neighbor has a mutt roughly the size of my adult APBT, and I've been on the phone with animal control numerous times because the owner was letting the dog roam. Thankfully, the situation got resolved before someone got hurt.

i agree - I've met some little ankle-biter dogs too that are never trained because people think that they're little and they can't hurt anyone - maybe they're right but I've ben more afraid of a little ankle biter more often than a big dog.

I suppose I'm just a dog Nazi, but I hold little dogs up to the same standards as big dogs. My dad's got a little Tibetan Spaniel that runs with my Pit Bulls, and he's mostly pretty cool. I guess if you train them up with the same expectations of behavior as you would have of, say, a Rottweiler, they can turn out alright. :)

EXACTLY! that's what I was saying in my original comment. Dogs are pack animals with a clearly defined alpha of the pack. When left unchallenged and without leadership they will display dominance aggression and bite people. Dogs need training and leadership - no matter the bread. I've seen chihuahuas bossing around large men. What's up with that?

Good question! I watch shows like Cesar Millan and Its Me or The Dog, and it just boggles my mind how some folks let their dogs run their life. (And that they need an expert to come in and tell them, "Quit spoiling your damn dog!") LOL I'm of the opinion that dogs should be a comfortable part of your life, not demand the whole of it.

Are you suggesting that conformational traits don't exist in APBTs? How many gamebred dogs do you see with underbites? Weak pasterns, flat feet, full-drop ears? Why would you try to tear down a dog that is doing a lot of good for the breed? Many people who own these dogs do absolutely nothing to improve our situation, or better yet, they make it worse.

Active dog but i wouldn't call it a real American Pit bull terrier. Judging from its looks it is no where near a pure bred game pitbull. It's head conformation, muscle capacity, and body posture does not qualify it as a pure bred pitbull terrier. It probably got mixed along the line.

No one said he was a pure American Pit Bull Terrier, he could be Amstaff, but even if he is an APBT mix he is still considered a pit bull.
