sly like most of the popular musicians of his time, felt a need to experiment with intoxicants which is never a good idea for the business minded. Deadlines and commitments are seldom kept when one is sly stoned.
Sly co-hosted the entire week of July 17, 1974. On one show Muhammad Ali was a guest and got into quite a heated argument with a white congressman (Wayne Hays) over the treatment of blacks in America. Sly tried to be a peacemaker.
the guy on Sly's right is Mike Douglas. The guy on his left (in the right side of the video) is comedian David Steinberg. I've never seen a talk show where a guest seemed to be interviewing another guest.
yep ! he was to perform at hamilton place, I was excited to finally see him but he came on stage, sang 1/2 a song and then walked of the stage...that was it the show was over. I still enjoy listening to him and the band over the years & consider him to be one of the coolest.
I once talked to someone when doing my radio show that mentioned he worked with Sly and he was known to wear different style wigs, no big deal to me, it's just what I was told some years ago. I like the wigs I thought they looked cool. Sly also had his teeth fixed when they became more popular. You will notice that in the earlier videos.
A widow's peak is NOT going to affect his hair. He had plenty of hair. There are millions of people who have thick hair, and widow's peaks. There's some idiot who actually thinks that a video of Sly et al with short HAIRCUTS, meant that they wore wigs over it. Never HEARD of someone getting a short haircut in summer, or just to take a break for a while?? Duh.
Thank you very much for posting! Do you have the episode with Carol Channing about the same time as this one? She song a song that I actually recorded in cassette tape because It was so out of character for her and haunting?
Thank you for posting theses videos. Do you have the Mike Douglas show when Muhammad Ali and Sly Stone were on the same episode. I believe that was 1974. Again thank you for posting the Mike Douglas show.
sorry. only just seen this one. mohammed ali was saying a lot of angry stuff about racism and that blacks should look out for themselves and to hell with everyone else. sly argued with him, saying that was no better, and that everyone should get on with everyone, and ali hated that. he got angry that a "brother" was arguing with him on tv rather than showing solidarity. sly had some great points and handled it all really well. electric interview! sly's amazing!
From this interview, it sounds like he felt pressure from traveling, performing and being around the wrong people (after starting out with those he began with). This is probably the reason for the drug problem. Mike Douglas seems to be more respectful to Sly than Dick Cavett. I thank God that there is You Tube to listen to music such as Sly and the Family Stone. Most of today's music is garbage.
@Mistuhbig That happened alot and probably still does today, these artists fall into fame and fortune and aren't necessarily prepared to handle everything else it entails, all the responsibilities and such, and there are people all around them dishing out orders and such. Very easy to get misguided when you don't know where you;re going. I also dislike how Cavett was so rude towards him and even patronizing. Guess his name was Dick for a reason.

Sly was noted for wearing wigs, he had a widows peak his real hair wouldn't have looked that good if worn out full.

That's total bullshit.

During that period Sly used to have a necklace with a jewish/David star. Was Sly stone Jew?

No, he wore it in honor of his manager, David Kapralik. Even after David resigned as his manager, he still wore it for quite some time.
