  • Very good mate, great bass sound. You guitar strumming looks so so telexed and natural, truly excellent video!

  • Your Johnny Marr aren't you? :3

  • MR SPARKLE-O!!!!!!!

  • My dad showed me this video when I first started bass, so so good.

  • After watching this over a hundred times, I still can't believe that this is just one 360 track. This song is yours now.

  • perfect!

  • Nice paying

  • hey daniel did u add the toasters to your rick 360/12, or was it purchased that way? I have a 1994 rickie 360/12 but with high-gains...i'm considering swapping them out for toasters though..

  • @defendthelowend - the one in this video I got 2nd hand with toasters already on it. Personally I find the hi-gains on my 330 very flexible - by twiddling the knobs or with a bit of EQ or different amp settings you can get much the same sound as the toasters. There's no real need to change them in my opinion. Along with "which strings", "which capo", "which strap", "which plectrum", these are all things people worry about when they should be practising. :)

  • good job mate. what kind of precision bass is that? i love its sound and looks.

  • @picinomundo - a very cheap Squire copy. The cheapest bass in the shop on the day I bought it. I tried a real Fender (price 10x more) and decided it wasn't as good as the Squire. But i never touched it again after getting a Ric 4003, so I've chucked it out.

  • @danielearwicker cool. do you know what strings andy rourke used? I read something about rotosound but I don't know which ones. the swing 66 I suppose?

  • 11 people disliked this? What? :( Awesome job.

  • Hey Daniel! you know i adore your stuff!

but how about a remake of this one?

do it like you did girlfriend in a coma or something!

    keep it up mate!

  • @Stevebanany - you may enjoy my collaboration with 325C58, I just added drums and a few more guitar tracks to an excellent version he'd already done, see related videos.

  • 5 stars!

  • tienes estilo hello goodbye

  • What a bassline! But isn't it played faster on the original?

  • really good playing !

  • my dream guitar....

  • Excellent!

  • Dude that was awesome!

  • Sweet man. Yer amazing, and that guitar

    sounds incredible.

  • sweet i picked up things in that bass line that i hadn't in 12 yrs of listening to the smiths. thanks for that.

  • Phenom !! Johnny Marr is gonna wanna hire yerass !!

  • You, my friend, fawkin' rock!!! Well done :D

  • ditto that ^

  • awesome!

  • fast part its kinda hard to figure out :P

  • this is one of my favourite youtube videos, it's just perfect!

  • you're the best musician on youtube! well done, made my day thx!

  • A lot of under-rated bass players in the early 80's: Rourke, John Taylor and Craig Adams (Sisters 1st album)...

  • Johnny wrote all the guitar and is credited for all the music, so I can see your point dalijoti.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure Rourke and Joyce put their own slant on things. I guess only people in the Smiths would be able actually say for sure!

This video was one of the most enjoyable things I've watched on Youtube - you sir are a fantastic musician!

  • im not sure thats true, marr said rourkes bass lines made the queen is dead album so ...

  • I agree with Marr...on an purely intuitive basis of course.

  • dude rickenbackers are the best!!!!!!

  • amazing... that's all i have haha

  • is it me or is rourke a genius on the bass? i mean how to think of such greatbass lines

  • Yes I agree he was great. His bass lines contributed to the unique sound of The Smiths.

  • johnny marr wrote all the music, inc bass lines

  • i am coming to the conclusion that Johnny Marr is a genius

  • @wigmeistergeneral Andy Rourke is the freakin' genius on this tune, mate. 3 of the 4 in that band were/are gifted. . . thus it's brilliance. Daniel, I am inspired your work, too. Many thanks.

  • Wonderfulll!!

  • That was pretty cool.

  • wooo

  • hell yeah!

  • By jove you're good!

  • I love you!!! =D

    Brilliant, brilliant!!!

  • are you a sun off Jonny Marr ?

  • bear jealous of ur toys

  • this is just great!

    thanks a lot

  • never noticed how intricate the bassline actualy was! top class job.

  • super, je ne me lasse pas d'écouter ce morceau. Bravo le guitariste !!! (un fan Français des Smiths et de Johnny Marr).

  • Outstanding

    What talent

  • Simply perfect!

  • tabs?? i wanna play this song soo bad.

  • wow.

that was like totally perfect. 10 out of 10 for sure.

  • your also a brilliant guitarest(:

  • great skills...i suspect the harmonics were on purpose!

  • would you mind posting the tabs or where you got yours from if you used a sourse at all, it would be greatly appreciated

  • great bassline, great skills

  • Dude, you rule!

  • your shit hot mate

  • what delay settings are you using?

  • My band is doing this song and i had like no idea what to play and you just BEASTED that song. NICE!

  • FanF**kingtastic so wish i could play like this

  • sick bass, sick sick bass

  • I don't know much about the Bass but it sounded fine to me.

  • Alright, that's it. I'm buying a bass guitar...

  • johnny marr would be very proud! good job.

  • genio!

  • Brilliant!

  • Lovely playing..Really nice..

Surely your second chord Emaj should have the added B (from the top E string which carries into the but Fsharp Maj for half a beat???

thats the bit that melts me with this song..

  • yeah he really ruins it by not doing what you said he should nt have done relax man its a great version

  • Don'tlisten to these purist down your playing. It was awesome, keep it up. Smiths Rule!

  • That really does sound astonishingly good.

    /salute

  • you rip...nice jorb...

  • nice shirt dude.

  • Yeah man, that's the way to do it. sounds awesome, keep it up...

  • smiths is amazing... great job man

  • Thats a sick Guitar...

  • Only fruity jazz players don't use a pick.

  • oh come on its not that bad, use both depending on when

  • I was only joking. I don't think kizugrey is serious! Paul McCartney frequently played bass with a pick and he's one of the most influential bassists in popular music, certainly one of my favourites. And obviously the bassist who came up with this video's (approximate) bass line always played with a pick. And then there's Mike Mills, and every punk/new wave bassist ever. Anyone acting surprised at this must be joking!

  • ya or a new bass player, but i prefer finger picking, i like the tone better

  • I played guitar to this and it sounded awesome! Good job.

  • Wish i could play both lol

  • very nice indeed!

  • Regarding the bass part, I suddenly hear a 'striking resemblance' to Jumping Jack Flash.

  • amazing !!! great job

  • way better than the original in my mind, except no lyrics

  • nice work dude, liking your style

  • hit some G on the small E string while on the C position dude !! slide it up to A when sliding in the D position ! it will sound a lot better,.

the solo is a bit "not right",,,, sorry for my negative comments i hope it will help you though !

  • hehe, nice job!

  • Great.........

  • "for lucky best wash...miss-ahh spahkalaaaah!"

  • nice. that is a damn sexy bass. the sound on those are amazing

  • awesome!

  • Fucking amazing!

    Great job.

  • Daniel do you think Squier guitars are cheap (basses)? :/

  • They are in deed...Half price comparing it to the Fender ones.

Squier is the cheap line for Fender, as Epiphone is to Gibson for example.

  • Yes, but....

Squier is far, FAR superior in quality to what you'd expect from Epiphone. Most are better than MIM Fenders these days.

  • Having owned Fender and Epiphone instruments and played quite lots of Squire ones I can definately tell you that Epiphone's quality is far superior to Squire's.Epiphone instruments are much closer to the Gibson ones than the Squire is to Fender..Of course Epiphone is a bit more expensive as well compared to Squire.

  • Play the new guitars from either company. Squier has really upped itself on the quality.

  • Hope Squire has really changed their quality standards..Better and cheaper instruments are always a benefit for us players..I will surely give it a try once again.

  • I sort of see what you mean, however, Marr multilayered most of his stuff so nobody's right on one guitar. Fucking genius he was.

    I can't get the rhythm...

  • The rhythm's pretty difficult - it's all 16ths and very syncopated, but if you can learn how to play that fast that accurately without getting cramp and listen closely you can pick it up. The chords danny boy here is playing are slightly off and he misses some out, but mostly they're just different colourings of the chords he's playing. It's mostly noticeable with the moved-up C shape, as he needs to add in the 'G' (not actually a G but if it were C) on the treble E string.

  • Those good ole 12-strings Rickenbackers have such a great sound ! Miki Berenyi used to play on a 370-12 (3 pick-ups) in early Lush songs. She also had a Gibson ES-335 and an Epiphone Riviera, both 12-strings as well !

  • the bass bit that is

  • could you send me the tab for that please it's brilliant!

  • wow. this is soo good, i did my own version too, hope you dont mind if i post it as a video response

  • u are a very sparkling player dude ! wow love the bass personnaly

  • Why don't we get to see your face? Your Rickenbacker is more beautiful than old people in love.

  • fucking amazing!

  • Please! i beg you... can you give me the chords you're playing? would be so nice thx!

  • It's simple really, capo on 4th, start with A minor but then take out the 3rd finger so you can use it to augment - you'll find it naturally falls in places that sound good. Then go to C maj shape and then slide that shape up two frets as a different way of getting a D maj, a common Marr maneuver (actually a B#maj in this case, with the capo.)

  • oh thank you very much :D so this will be the second smith song i learn after some girls are bigger! Cool!

  • 'Talent, by its very nature, is never wasted.

    Words, however, often are.' jorel845.

'Talent by its very nature is often wasted, usually overcome by ego' Juttkeys

  • Look, could we get back to talking about me please?

  • hehe sorry dude! keep posting the vids :) By the way I did see the Smiths in 86 at Preston Guildhall, they only got 3 minutes into the first song the queen is dead when some idiot threw a missile and hit Morrissey, that was the end of gig 3 minutes long! I know it was filmed as all the other gigs from that tour were, I just hope someone will post it on here one day.

  • what?

  • I think the last contributor is being a bit harsh on you Dan.The great Johnny Marr sounded not at his best live particularly when he played at Brixton Academy and many other such acousticless venues.I think it's great.

  • nice bass but guitar is swamped, would sound dreadful live. Daniel you need to do some live gigs instead of working in a studio all the time, your talent is wasted somewhat. IMHO !

  • Talent, by its very nature, is never wasted.

    Words, however, often are.

    :)

  • of course talent can be wasted. But yes maybe I sounded a bit harsh, tho wasn't meant to be, Daniel's version of How soon is now is spot on.

  • this is pretty awesome man, what program do you use to record and what kinda effects an EQing did you do on the bass because it sounds pretty fat.

  • Hi Daniel,

I noticed you have both a 330 and 360 Rickenbacker,

which do you think is the better guitar?

I am about to order a 360/12 Ric,so please tell me

    your reasons for your choice.

    Cheers from Australia

  • Brilliant.What a fantastic performance of one of my all-time favourite numbers.Unforgettable.

  • so you found this all out by ear?? that's amazing and well played:D

  • dude, the action on ur bass seems really high.. did u changed it to be that high? why?

  • That's how it was when I got it. A few weeks ago I put flatwounds on it and lowered the action, so it's not like that now.

  • Dude, all of your videos are f*ing great! The only flaw that I saw in this video was in the bass part where you sometimes didn't press the string enough or pressed to close to the fret (the metal) and it made a rattling (uh... whatever) sound. Either way, it was a very cool video. Keep Rocking!

  • this shit was wikked awsom, you rock.

  • that's awfully mega of you, old thing.

  • I stand corrected! But how do you do it, am I just tone deaf? Perhaps you could do a tutorial on learning by ear. Keep putting your stuff on.

  • Lovely job - thanks, very inspiring and makes me want to carry on learning!

R.e tabs - they must get you somewhere! and the greatest musicans play to written music.

  • I only once tried reading a tab, and either I read it wrong or it was written wrong. Either way, I gave up and went back to the more enjoyable approach!

  • Andy Rourke??! Great Job!!

  • Great job...I'd love to see the bass part done with John Entwistle style finger picking. However, it sounds awesome!!! You're truly skilled. The sound from your guitar reminds me of a banjo...

And to everyone begging for tabs, I say that you should at least try learning stuff by ear! You'll get nowhere via tabs. If you're at a jam session, where will the tabs be?

  • Thanks, yes I grew up hearing banjo all the time so maybe that's why I like this guitar sound. I never really play finger-picking bass, I find it impossible to get it sounding rhythmical.

  • to each his own :)

  • that cool.. Andy played with a pick most of the time anyhow!

  • nice

  • Loving the bassline. excellent.

  • Damn nice job...excellent, flawless work. Wait a minute, are you Johnny Marr? Crikey that was awesome!

  • 5/5 quality.

I absolutely love your bass tone. What amp you playing it through ?

  • It's the sound of a Fender Twin tube amp, though it's really just a digital imitation from the on-board effects of a Roland VS2480CD.

  • PLEASE TELL ME THE BASS TAB YOU USED!!

  • He dousn't use tabs, all good musicians don't. Lol

  • can you please message me the bass tab, PLEASE!!!! I'D APPRECIATE IT.

  • doesn't Johnny Marr uses a Gibson for this song? i could be wrong but i think so. But OBVOIUSLY it sounds great when you play it, doesn't matter which guitar you use!

  • Excellent! I noticed someone else requested the details on how you play the solo. Could I get that as well? I also play it different (and not good!)

    Thanks!

  • Sorry Shortround, but you'll just have to take my word for it as I don't have the facilities to put stuff up! I could go round to my cousins and use his camera I suppose, WATCH THIS SPACE! You can hear my bass playing though on my myspace site, Mollweide Projection , but I'm playin' my own stuff and not The Smiths, send me your criticism, haha!

  • No-one beats me at Barbarism.

  • Well, put your tube were your mouth is and upload some video evidence.

That sounded really dirty too me.

  • post your video

  • Good stuff mate. I've always found Pretty Girls Make Graves to be a tricky one to pick out. I mastered it years ago, (took me all day), but I've forgotten it now. I do a mean Barbarism though!

  • I bet I've got a better Barbarism. I'm going to post it on youtube soon.

  • *Angrily throws away my own bass*

  • Godd job buddy! Is this he live bassline? Check out my attempt. It's slightly different i think.. Lot's of fun to play though..

  • Dude, you could play a kitchen sink! Abosolutely amazing. Damn that was good!

  • sounds like but has nothing to do with the crunchy bass lines from the original song dude

  • is that a japanese '62 reissue, looks just like mine?!

  • Do you have any of your own music? Let's have it.

  • Just uploaded some...

  • Fucking awesome!

  • pure briliance, 10 outa 10

  • this is my favorite clip so far, ive subscribed to you and i hope to see more brilliance from you. you're amazingly talented.

  • Daniel I think "u've got everything now" from Smiths first album does fit very well in your Ric. Y don't u try it?

  • youre so good :]

  • wow i didnt realize that bassline was so good. and i would really really appreciate it if you could send me what you play during the 'guitar solo', i guess. i play it a little different, but its a lot simpler.

  • very very nice... but why do i feel that the basses are always so quiet... little bit more volume would be nice :P

  • Due to this comment I really turned up the bass on 'Nowhere Fast' :) Hope it's loud enough.

  • Sweet.

  • That right there proves that Andy Rourke should not be under valued by any Smiths/Moz fan!

  • agreed!
