  • A great talent....superb singer superb songs..couldn't have asked for more from him.

  • This song of John's ranks up there with the greatest songs ever written. It is my absolute favorite of all John's songs. I still miss him and am so sorry we all missed out on some great songs that he would have written. You are sorely missed.

  • I grew up listening to John Denver. Both of my parents are big fans and although we live in the South Eastern US, we always had a South West style living. The Native American colors, the cowboy hats, we even had a bunch of mandelas hanging around (they look like giant furry dream-catchers). John Denver was always a big part of my up bringing. When I heard he died I was only 8. Since then none of us can listen to him without getting teary-eyed. I think we will always miss him.

  • "Far Out !!"

  • My dear friend John...

  • I always enjoyed John Denvers songs. But I dislike them when he changes the tunes etc. I prefer the original.

  • This guy is a one-off. Nobody like him.

  • Once when driving to Seattle, as we past Ellensburg with my family, I had one of John's CDs in. As this song began a big red tailed hawk swooped past ove the freeway infront of us just as the guitar began to build. I thought that was pretty neat. Then as the sone neared its end I looked off to my left towards a lake and there was a bald eagle circling there. Things like that cant happen by accident.

  • I actually met John Denver opening night at Harrahs Lake tahoe Aug 1975. I ran into John Summers in the casino and because my wife was a pro skier that used his music in her freestyle routine, he took us back stage after the show to meet him. Spent about 30 minutes with him and must say he is as real in person as on stage. Nothing fake about this guy. His music is still inspirational and I miss having the opportunity to once again hook up with him. Great guy, great music!!!

  • So Inspiring!

  • Its 2 min of my life I love spending over and over again!

  • I love this one it is one of my very favorites....He left us too soon...However, he went the way I feel he would have wanted to go...Flying up in the sky like the Eagle and the Hawk.

  • Today's so called musical icons should watch this to see how it's done.

No scantily clad dancers, pyrotechnics, backing band or vocal enhancer....just pure talent and passion!

    Go JD!

  • Does he have Indian blood in him?

  • Fuck Jimmy Page.

    Fuck him.

  • Age has nothing to do with the way you perceive the world's ways....some people are mature at very tender age..and some are not...they are prey to eagles and hawks...they are like pigeons...and easy prey

  • frickin awesome...Curse Sister Fate for taking him from us so soon.....Thank you God for leaving us with his music....

  • John is soaring with them we hope

  • His spiritual voice will live forever...words and music.Forever in my heart.I used to sing my younger siblings to sleep with his amazing songs and they keep reminding me of that .I think we all need to go back to his "natures way' of everything to keep this world alive.PEACE LOVE and a little bit of TENDERNESS.

  • This guy isn't remembered enough for the musical gifts he left behind. A troubadour in every sense of the word!

  • Damn, johns gettin down on the power chords!

  • This number still gives me goose bumps 36 years after I heard it the first time.

  • An atypical song for John with this guitar riff.

    Intresting in it's way.

Denver remainings the last touching poetry of usa music.

  • It is not really cool to like John Denver, but those who feel that way really are missing out - he had a great voice, his songs told stories and if you have never been to the Rockies (like me) then you do feel that a part of your life is missing and you should go.

    (P.S. All financial contributions welcome!!)

  • @MilesMacf Who cares if anyone thinks that John Denver's music is "cool"?? If I cared for that, I would have never listened to the most beautiful, touching, meaningful songs in my life. Long live John Denver, at least in our hearts! :)

  • My favorite J.D. song.

  • God shuda given us wings, then John wudnt a had to go make his self a fatal mishap.

  • beautiful, just like everything John sang. I saw 3 concerts of his, and consider myself so fortunate.

  • just a few on the world was granted such a clear and powerful voice. this is the kind of gift needed to be considered a true singer/artist. rip, john! we'll keep these songs in our heart forever.

  • I had the good fortune of seeing John Denver at Madison Square Garden some years ago. He does sing of things that I've seen..

  • Humble and beautiful. What an amazing being !!!

  • There can be only one. One king, one ruler, one nr 1. John Denver was and always will be. A unique man, and a true nr1. Humble as he was, he was godsend.

Love this video, along with all his other live appereances.

  • I started out as a 10-year old kid, living in Colorado in the early 70's listening to John. Despite loving everything from punk to metal to southern rock, this song is my favorite, and is the reason I picked up the guitar at 12 and is one I still play. What an incredible range the man had. Very much missed.

  • chrishall i think we had a similiar background where radio blasted various forms of rock n roll music and as a young lad, i was quite influenced by this. John Denver however, greatly inspired me to take a break from life's noisey and often confusing demands. This tune also moved me to play guitar and look above matters (not unlike an eagles view) when my heart had been robbed by a break-up or

  • Speaking of Punk and Metal...

There is an Iron Maiden song similar to this. Acoustic. But written when Iron Maiden was in it's punk era. It's Punk/British Heavy Metal but is an acoustic song...

I was wondering... Iron Maiden - Prodigal Son reminds me of John Denver - The Eagle and the Hawk? In a way it did.

  • TO ALL GUITARISTS remember to tune down to D on the low E string and play the E chord shape with your low E being fretted too.

  • this is my favorate song of his and this particular version is my favorate. I play the guitar and this sounds awesome on the twelve string guitar.

there will never be another like John. we all miss him. what a soul.

  • I wish they would make this a ringtone on verizon swimfit57

  • Nope not anymore. There was BB King, but now all they have is a bunch of "gangstas". makes me wanna puke, before I quickly change the station...

John Denver was great. Thanks for putting this up here.

  • He still moves me to joy and to tears.

    I miss him so.

  • great song theres not many like john denver

  • does anyone know where this was filmed and when? it looks like (from the set and the outfit) that it might have been filmed in liverpool where i saw him perform in the early eighties.

  • This is from the concert at the Apollo Theater in London, England that JD did in 1982. I call it his "white suit concert"- ha. Very fine performance with just him and his guitars.

  • Comment removed

  • beauty at it's finest.

  • i just listen an cry - awesome video

  • i honestly believe that the genre of music does not matter at all with respect to how good something is. people think rock is best, or rap, or country. great music is great music. this is truly great music.

  • hands down, this is my absolute favorite john denver song! thanks for posting! XOXXO

  • blew my mind the first time i heard it

  • I once had a discussion, when I was once much younger than I am today with some radio people who tried to convince me that "such and such" Lightfoot and "such and such " dylan where so much better than John. I was really drunk then as I am now (as evidenced from the distict lack of fullstops) (can I spell "lack" like that ? I said then as I say now disguising your feelings in your songs to appear enigmatic or deeply interesting is easy.......the river my blood, over dead empires. EAGLE

  • I'm on your side! Even though Dylan has written some great songs, J.D. has the songs that really touch the heart and he had a much better voice! As for such and such Lightfoot....you've got to be kidding me.

  • The Eagle And The Hawk (L)(L)

  • One quick note, brainless teenager, there has been thousands of taylor Swifts, and there will be thousands more, but when they are all dead and buried and forgotten, people will still listen to John Denver.

  • brainless teenager, If you did not give a fuck, you wouldn't have replied. Boring is a subjective term, and you are too ignorant to comprehend that.

  • LOL, fuck off.

how many times have you said brainless teenager? it was funny the first time, it's getting old, dude.

jesus christ. you're probably just some old man with nothing better to do. xDDDD

  • @LoveSmegg Um, aren't you being sort've like the pot calling the kettle black. If you don't like this music then why are you hanging around here?

  • my favorite John Denver song.

  • This song is intense and much better without the strings.

Replying to an earlier post...vocal pitch and timing are not just born talent but requires hard work and above all passion.

  • John Denver has always been my idol. But I can see that he tuned his Guitar down 1 full step to reach the high notes.

  • John was singing in much deeper register by the early eighties & was always striving to improve his voice which he felt had a tendency to get a bit 'thin' in the early days.

He was about 40 here & a drop in pitch is not uncommon as one gets older.

Compare with earlier versions on YT. His voice developed amazingly.

Maybe the lower tuning had to do with his deeper pitch?

    I'm just askin'.

  • My favorite song.

    Thanks for sharing...

I saw him in '83 - ex wife to be took me and my Mom, it was the nicest thing anyone ever did for Mom.

There was no backup at all, just him, and his 12 string, and it was simply amazing.

  • Easy to hit the high notes - play the 12 string very well!!!

The hard part is being born with a pitch perfect voice - and perfect timing!!!!!!!!

  • i really do love this man even though i wasnt born!!.. he had such a great voice, great song writting skills.. i have bought up on his music and can find lyrics that insipe me.. he sang such sweet music.. RIP..

  • JD really had such a beautiful voice and was also a really good guitarist. But to put them together and sound this great live as a solo performer is especially amazing.

  • Always a treat to find a video performance of him live. No straining to hit the high notes on this song, just a great piece of work. Rich full voice and always nice 12 string playing. Wished I could have seen him before he passed. Truly missed by generations of fans.

  • I was prelidged to see him in Concert, early 70's..He just stood and sang his songs, with little back up. He stopped in the middle & said that he was simply a Country Boy, he didn't do any of the fancy stuff that other "Entertainers" did...proceeded to say that his music was his only talent~ aside from one other. He then put down his guitar, picked up 5 balls and juggled them perfectly for us all. That Voice!!. Heaven's in harmony with the John's, Jims, Woody's, Freddies, Cass's. Amazing!

  • I like that he amended it to, "all that we can be, not JUST what we are."

The word "hope" was turned into a cheap political slogan. The real hope is the resurrection.

  • thank you for saying that! God and Jesus are hope.

  • my father and i really and adored this man. Now hopefully my father is enjoying him in heaven.

  • so sorry about your father! i lost mine in 87!

  • Amazing voice he had.

  • Still has, through the amazing music he made for us all =D

  • The angels up in heaven have 2 of the most harmonic, artistic singers of all time in Karen Carpenter and John Denver.

RIP Karen and John. Your music will live on

  • @MusicDoc123 God isn't real and John Denver is dead. Channel your false hope into something more productive.

  • @MusicDoc123 Freddy Mercuary and Dio?

  • @MusicDoc123 Yes, I agree with you! I had the chance to meet John a couple of times, and he was a great, gentle, caring man. He even delayed his plane flight for us! My cousin and I learned almost all of his songs, and after he died--I couldn't listen to his music until just lately--and I now am feeling all those same feelings from his beautiful music that I was back then! He had that pure, powerful voice, with the ultimate feeling and expression in everything he did!

  • This song is my favorite Denver song. I like the version found on his greatest hits album.

  • I think he sounds much better solo (like here :D)

  • Thanks for sharing this.. I always thought JD was at his best when it was just him and his guitar

  • Bravo Mr John Denver!! Thank you Lord for blessing the world with this man.

  • This is my favorite John Denver Song!!!!

  • One of the best Denver-song....

  • My favourite Denver song. Pure poetry!

  • Whatever he sings, in whatever year he sang, he was the best! His voice only got richer as he got older. Isn't great that we still want to hear him! He'll always be with us.

  • Now that is talent.

  • Amazing talent. John Denver said he didn't own his talent, it was a gift ...what a gift incredible

  • I am glad to know that one day after this is all over we will get to hear John sing again. Too bad he left us so soon.

  • wow thanks for posting, he is the master of that song! and with what sounds like minimal effort. i didn't know he did it on a 12-string.

  • unlike the morons that make STUPID responses...

"Reach for the heavens and hope for the future, and all that WE CAN BE, NOT JUST WHAT WE ARE"

    PEACE

  • WOW!!! Impressive!! One of my fave songs by one of my fave singers.

  • Stunning! This was JD; his life is often compared to that of an eagle. Yearning to soar, indeed to touch on the mountaintops.

    Cheers,

    Chris
