This song of John's ranks up there with the greatest songs ever written. It is my absolute favorite of all John's songs. I still miss him and am so sorry we all missed out on some great songs that he would have written. You are sorely missed.
I grew up listening to John Denver. Both of my parents are big fans and although we live in the South Eastern US, we always had a South West style living. The Native American colors, the cowboy hats, we even had a bunch of mandelas hanging around (they look like giant furry dream-catchers). John Denver was always a big part of my up bringing. When I heard he died I was only 8. Since then none of us can listen to him without getting teary-eyed. I think we will always miss him.
Once when driving to Seattle, as we past Ellensburg with my family, I had one of John's CDs in. As this song began a big red tailed hawk swooped past ove the freeway infront of us just as the guitar began to build. I thought that was pretty neat. Then as the sone neared its end I looked off to my left towards a lake and there was a bald eagle circling there. Things like that cant happen by accident.
I actually met John Denver opening night at Harrahs Lake tahoe Aug 1975. I ran into John Summers in the casino and because my wife was a pro skier that used his music in her freestyle routine, he took us back stage after the show to meet him. Spent about 30 minutes with him and must say he is as real in person as on stage. Nothing fake about this guy. His music is still inspirational and I miss having the opportunity to once again hook up with him. Great guy, great music!!!
I love this one it is one of my very favorites....He left us too soon...However, he went the way I feel he would have wanted to go...Flying up in the sky like the Eagle and the Hawk.
Age has nothing to do with the way you perceive the world's ways....some people are mature at very tender age..and some are not...they are prey to eagles and hawks...they are like pigeons...and easy prey
His spiritual voice will live forever...words and music.Forever in my heart.I used to sing my younger siblings to sleep with his amazing songs and they keep reminding me of that .I think we all need to go back to his "natures way' of everything to keep this world alive.PEACE LOVE and a little bit of TENDERNESS.
It is not really cool to like John Denver, but those who feel that way really are missing out - he had a great voice, his songs told stories and if you have never been to the Rockies (like me) then you do feel that a part of your life is missing and you should go.
@MilesMacf Who cares if anyone thinks that John Denver's music is "cool"?? If I cared for that, I would have never listened to the most beautiful, touching, meaningful songs in my life. Long live John Denver, at least in our hearts! :)
just a few on the world was granted such a clear and powerful voice. this is the kind of gift needed to be considered a true singer/artist. rip, john! we'll keep these songs in our heart forever.
There can be only one. One king, one ruler, one nr 1. John Denver was and always will be. A unique man, and a true nr1. Humble as he was, he was godsend.
Love this video, along with all his other live appereances.
I started out as a 10-year old kid, living in Colorado in the early 70's listening to John. Despite loving everything from punk to metal to southern rock, this song is my favorite, and is the reason I picked up the guitar at 12 and is one I still play. What an incredible range the man had. Very much missed.
chrishall i think we had a similiar background where radio blasted various forms of rock n roll music and as a young lad, i was quite influenced by this. John Denver however, greatly inspired me to take a break from life's noisey and often confusing demands. This tune also moved me to play guitar and look above matters (not unlike an eagles view) when my heart had been robbed by a break-up or
There is an Iron Maiden song similar to this. Acoustic. But written when Iron Maiden was in it's punk era. It's Punk/British Heavy Metal but is an acoustic song...
I was wondering... Iron Maiden - Prodigal Son reminds me of John Denver - The Eagle and the Hawk? In a way it did.
does anyone know where this was filmed and when? it looks like (from the set and the outfit) that it might have been filmed in liverpool where i saw him perform in the early eighties.
This is from the concert at the Apollo Theater in London, England that JD did in 1982. I call it his "white suit concert"- ha. Very fine performance with just him and his guitars.
i honestly believe that the genre of music does not matter at all with respect to how good something is. people think rock is best, or rap, or country. great music is great music. this is truly great music.
I once had a discussion, when I was once much younger than I am today with some radio people who tried to convince me that "such and such" Lightfoot and "such and such " dylan where so much better than John. I was really drunk then as I am now (as evidenced from the distict lack of fullstops) (can I spell "lack" like that ? I said then as I say now disguising your feelings in your songs to appear enigmatic or deeply interesting is easy.......the river my blood, over dead empires. EAGLE
I'm on your side! Even though Dylan has written some great songs, J.D. has the songs that really touch the heart and he had a much better voice! As for such and such Lightfoot....you've got to be kidding me.
One quick note, brainless teenager, there has been thousands of taylor Swifts, and there will be thousands more, but when they are all dead and buried and forgotten, people will still listen to John Denver.
John was singing in much deeper register by the early eighties & was always striving to improve his voice which he felt had a tendency to get a bit 'thin' in the early days.
He was about 40 here & a drop in pitch is not uncommon as one gets older.
Compare with earlier versions on YT. His voice developed amazingly.
Maybe the lower tuning had to do with his deeper pitch?
i really do love this man even though i wasnt born!!.. he had such a great voice, great song writting skills.. i have bought up on his music and can find lyrics that insipe me.. he sang such sweet music.. RIP..
JD really had such a beautiful voice and was also a really good guitarist. But to put them together and sound this great live as a solo performer is especially amazing.
Always a treat to find a video performance of him live. No straining to hit the high notes on this song, just a great piece of work. Rich full voice and always nice 12 string playing. Wished I could have seen him before he passed. Truly missed by generations of fans.
I was prelidged to see him in Concert, early 70's..He just stood and sang his songs, with little back up. He stopped in the middle & said that he was simply a Country Boy, he didn't do any of the fancy stuff that other "Entertainers" did...proceeded to say that his music was his only talent~ aside from one other. He then put down his guitar, picked up 5 balls and juggled them perfectly for us all. That Voice!!. Heaven's in harmony with the John's, Jims, Woody's, Freddies, Cass's. Amazing!
@MusicDoc123 Yes, I agree with you! I had the chance to meet John a couple of times, and he was a great, gentle, caring man. He even delayed his plane flight for us! My cousin and I learned almost all of his songs, and after he died--I couldn't listen to his music until just lately--and I now am feeling all those same feelings from his beautiful music that I was back then! He had that pure, powerful voice, with the ultimate feeling and expression in everything he did!
Whatever he sings, in whatever year he sang, he was the best! His voice only got richer as he got older. Isn't great that we still want to hear him! He'll always be with us.
A great talent....superb singer superb songs..couldn't have asked for more from him.
