  • Love the pissed off look Phil gives Chester when he fucks up the rythm right at the end of the clip during TTT

  • It's always great to see Tony get a nod for his solo career. Bit I do think Phil had a hard time handling it in the key it was in, which kind of sucks for Tony- the only time millions were exposed to his music is when It's not at it's best. Too bad

  • @TheLurMan1 hmmmm... I think Phil is mad at himself because he messed the lyrics up(you can see a wry smile in there ! ) key?! don't know ! Yes , it WAS about time Tony's solo stuff got high profile !

  • Sounds like Shortcut To Somewhere and All I Need Is A Miracle are in the wrong key for Phil.

  • You have got to feel for Tony - probably the biggest performance ever of one of his solo songs and Phil murders it! Shortcut to Somewhere is a great song sung by Fish but Phil seems lost.

  • Thanks for posting this, Harrybigloaf. I was searching for footage from this show to post on Facebook page called 'Duchess' I co-admin, as it was exactly 23 years ago today. You synchronized the video with an mp3 file of the audio part, or so it seems. Good job!

  • horrible medley. 90% of their solo careers really never produced anything great. phil had an awesome solo debut album with Face Value, but other than a few songs here and there the rest was garbage, imo.

steve hackett's solo stuff was the best, even if it's probably the least known.

  • @kingcrimson234 Steve Hackett?...oh yeah, the guy that was in Genesis for less than five years, left, and went on to sell virtually zero records. Same old tired arguments from the sour, poe-faced buffoons.

  • @MattSingh1 from the guys of genesis steve hackett's music is the best by far

  • @Genesis75 That's subjective opinion. What isn't subjective opinion, however, is the fact that PC sold more records than anyone else from the group. Combined, too.

  • Fish does a better job. ;)

  • @JRBL1A1 he does. phil sounded bad all around in this video, really unlike him.

  • ¡¡que buena!! las canciones solistas perdidas. Menuda banda. ¿por que no tocaron the Knife también?

  • That's All is a really good song. Shortcut to Somewhere is not bad. I have had some of Tony's albums. His first album, A Curious Feeling was his best. Still not up to the Genesis or Phil Collins level though.

  • hey is second track is in studio Fish orginal version?

  • Well for those following Genesis from the beginnings -Can't Hurry love isn’t exactly the great creative sound Genesis were known for. This was a crappy singalong song to shoot up the charts and sell CD’s! And it did. OK It's grown on me and I can listen to it in it's context of the time. I also admit that even when Genesis/Collins wrote thyis type of 'hit' songs they always had a quality sound about them. Interesting medley.

  • @soundspur Fuck Phil and his RnB bullshit..

  • Thank you Harrybigloaf from Judy.

  • I remember recording this on VHS in the 80's! Thanks for this! Tony's pounding those keys...

  • Oh, bless Phil's heart, but it sounds like "Shortcut" was just a little bit too high for him on that day. This must of been really tough, vocally. He nailed all the others though! :)

  • what song is it? 4:25

  • @grgcatala - It's called "That's All".

  • I was there. It was quite a day.

  • god i've never heard that medly before. tony's one of my idles but i've said it before he doesn't sound great playing other people's songs! lol and typical, after all the solo hits phill had had by then they chose can't hurry love. quite odd but interesting.

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhh, '88! The year after the INVISABLE TOUCH tour, the year BUSTER came out, THE YEAR OF the HALOGRAM, biking around, and the stars!

  • Man, was just after their INVISABLE TOUCH tour. Ahhhhhhhhhhh, '88, the year of the HALOGRAM, BUSTER, and the stars!

  • Tony's song sounds good, shame he never had the confidence/interest in promoting his solo songs more.

  • Playing You Cant Hurry love is tooooo Easy for Tony, thats why he looked so boring :D

  • I suposse that Genesis is playing the solo carrer`s songs of everyone... first of Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike And The Mechanics and later Genesis

  • Where did they shoot this footage? Is this from their stint working on the Carnvial cruise line? LOL

  • i never knew genesis ever played any of their solo work as a group, great video!

  • love this video. we were going on tour, in england to open for genesis but 2 weeks befor the tour our guitar player skipped town. God bless.

  • look at tony, he seems so bored... i think he thinks ,, but you can hurt me, give me the chance playing apocalpse ":D

  • A true artist. Always been one of my favorites.

  • people have no appreciation of real artists, not the the lip syncing, cant carry a tune, model wanna be's of today

  • This sounds a bit cabaret :o(

  • It is too bad that you all can't realize that your time to get old is coming faster than you think. When you nearly die your whole attitude changes. You savor every day.

  • I'm sorry - this is sad. Not the genesis I know and love. Sounds like the music we can hear in the "Alan Bennett" class section of a Yorkshire Airlines plane.

  • well , these are not genesis Songs...

They only play it... And its not soo bad ;)

  • They are getting old now.....and that's very sad.

  • I remember seeing this on some cable channel live back then. Phils voice was breaking up because he was constantly joining all the acts and singing with them. Guess he over did it that day. Still great. What a party!

  • I thought I either owned or had seen every Genesis/Phil Collins video released. That was until i came across this awesome clip. Where did you find it at? Would luv to have a copy of it but I bet it's very rare. So many thank's for the upload.

  • It's from the 40th anniversary of Atlantic Records broadcast on HBO in May 1988. I have this with more stuff from it, but the quality isn't this good. After all, it's a 20 year old VHS tape.

  • Phil is having a hard time singing Shortcut to Somewhere. Can't blame Tony for those lyrics either!

Kudos to Tony for getting creative with the CP-70 as a midi trigger in that song.

  • excellent

  • Need backup singers, especially in You Can't Hurry Love.

  • never seen before Phil singing a song of Mike & the mechanics, great!

  • If you listen to this, you are reminded that alone or together, these fellows are talented. Good songs, great performance. What's not to like?

  • I ever though Phil Collins is better than Paul Carreck, now I know it.

  • this is excellent :)

    i love Genesis Medleys

even if it's mostly songs from their solo careers :D

  • not exactly my favourite P/C stuff.... I guess I am just missing the original Genesis stuff. However, to his honour, Phil can still sing after all of these years!

  • Understand, but Phil has always brought distinctive drumlines in addition to showman attitude. Funny is that he didn't want to tour his first 2 albums - I got to see him at Penn State in front row on his first solo tour - was AMAZING!! Still one of the best concerts I've ever seen....

  • Bigwo56, he can't, at least not as he used to. Remember, this is over twenty years ago.

  • I love Phil to pieces, but wow, Shortcut to Somewhere....ouch. Isn't there a 12 minute version of this medley out there somewhere?

  • shortcut to somewhere is fuckin' rubbish

  • Interesting selection of 'shorts' (lol)

  • Think I prefer Fish's vocals on Shortcut and The late Mr Young on Miracle

  • Super!!!!! J'adore Phil Collins!

  • For the record...only That's All and Tonight Tonight Tonight are actually Genesis. Can't Hurry Love was Phil Collins (solo career), Shortcut to Somewhere was Tony Banks (from the movie Quicksilver), and Miracle was Mike and the Mechanics. Thanks for posting...hadn't seen this one.

  • what song @ 02.00?

  • Credit were credits due. This is a nice clip, thanks for posting. For the critics here, Phil was singing a section of a Mike & the Mechanics track. That's Mike as in Mike Rutherford ('the other guy'). PEACE :-)

  • 01:04 - no, Phil... There are no backing vocalists around this time! Horrible sound, by the way. Probably a raw mix of some kind. But thanks for posting!

  • God I hate "you can't hurry love". I find it funny that the song Phil selects for "his music" is a cover. Come on....

  • Agreed. Well at least there's an explanation: Phil seemed to be tired of too "European" and "White" music by the late 70s (he also finds himself sounding too "polite" when he took over from P. Gabriel (I refer to real interviews). He turned to soul music and Motown (etc.) for inspiration. Makes sense, but I think the result - especially of his solo career - was musically shallow.

  • Fantastic!

  • The only opportunity to hear Phil singing the other guys stuff. Great moment in time. Too bad Tony did not have Phil sing his stuff. It would of made some money.

  • "The other guy"?

    ...I hate modern Genesis...

  • "Modern Genesis", as you so strangely called it, has been there since well over a decade before you were even born! This IS Genesis, like it or not.

  • What I was saying is that I don't like how the Phil Collins era ruined the classic Genesis era with Gabriel as the lead.

  • You think P/C ruined that era but a lot of others don't. It's all in the ear of the beholder. For instance, Trick of the Tail is one of their greatest albums ever.

  • I completely agree that Trick of the Tail is phenomenal. I don't think Phil's presence ruined the band, but rather, Peter's and Mike's absence.

  • You must mean Steve. Mike never left.

  • Oops, yeah, meant Steve Hackett.

  • guys. the mistake at the end just shows you how good Phil is, that he doesn't stop the whole song and can just keep going right through it. we'll never know if someone played the wrong fill, which is a cue for someone else, or if phil just messed up. I can tell you, as a musician, that if I mess up on a song, i will usually turn my head to see if anyone noticed. this is a natural reaction. i doubt if he was blaming anyone in the band with that look.

  • It is a great show: I've got the broadcast part of it on VHS from the ABC broadcast that night. I'll post the relevant parts in due time.

Phil almost caused a train wreck that night: listen to him lose the beat on Tonight Tonight and then look back at Chester as though it is Chester's fault. Phil is saved by the band's sticking to the arrangement.

  • Chester did come in off so it sounds to me like it was his fault but pretty minimal mistake they got right back on track but it was right before the transition (breakdown) into Invisible Touch. That could of been a mess.

  • This was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. It was at the Garden in NYC back in '88. Almost 13 hours. Of course INXS was a no show. But bands like Genesis and Foreigner really rocked the place. And Led Zep closed it down. Those performances made it worth sitting through Roberta Flack singing "Killing Me Softly" four times that day!

  • Great medley. I haven't seen this before. Thanks for posting. BTW - originally Fish sang Shortcut to somewhere, didn't he?

  • Aye. Banks probably had a part in it, I gather.

  • Was this edited in any way? I noticed the quick audio dropouts in-between songs. Or did they actually perform these like this? And who the heck programmed Tony's sounds? Good lord ...

  • you're right he messed up

  • If they were going to do a Mechanics track, don't you think it would hve been better if they did "A Call To Arms"? That was a Genesis track originally.

  • Interesting hearing Phil's vocal take on Shortcut to Somewhere and All I Need is A Miracle. Very cool!

  • Have you got the full lot?

I had it one time.. but lent the video to a friend as it had the Spurs v Arsenal game on. Never did see it agin, Gutted.

  • Phil botched the end, and thought it was the band. Honest mistake.

  • he din't botch the end you idiot, you clearly know nothing about music or timing or jazz etc etc.

  • Yikes! Easy Charlie. What, are you blowing him or something? Now then, if you watch closely, he DID botch the end.Pay attention this time music expert. Jeez.

  • ok shithead you think what you like, I can only reiterate my earlier point about your complete lack of musical knowledge, you are an embarrassment now fuck off.

  • You're funny. Did you LISTEN to the ending, or are you too tunnel vision about how Phil was just being "Jazzy"? I love Genesis, but it's a simple fact that he came in too early at the end. No need to call me out as something I'm not. Go get a glass of warm milk, take a deep breath and just Listen to the end. I'm done with you.

  • yeah i'm funny, and not deaf nor stupid now fuck off sad wank yank cunt.

  • Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Your money's on the dresser, I'm done wit you, BITCH!

    Love,

    The Yank Cunt

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaa!!!

  • Run along now bitch, :O))

  • you are wrong, and quite tough over the net, ip addresses are great don't ya think.

  • patronising yank cunt, oh and yer wrong wanker.

  • you're right

  • Very interesting! Although Phil doesn't seem to know what he's doing with 'Shortcut to Somewhere', needed a bit more rehearsal on that one me thinks...lol

  • HAHAHAAA!!!

That's so funny to watch Tony play "You can't hurry love"!! Great contribution!! :)

  • It doesn't seem so strange when you consider that Tony had probably been a fan of that song since 1966. He and Peter Gabriel listened to soul music a lot at Charterhouse.

  • Whats the sencond song called?

  • It's called "Shortcut to somewhere"

Originally written and Performed by Tony Banks and Fish.

  • Gracias Gracias gracias gracias Thanks thanks soy fan de Génesis de la primera hora y esto es espectacular!!! hay que ser burro para no darse cuenta. Genios músicos

  • Shut it you muppet!

    I think this is excellent!

It wasn't exactly a genesis gig was it! just a one off

  • I think this was a continuation of phil's set plus a genesis spot

  • Phil Collins sings "All I Need Is A Miracle" much better that Paul Carrek. I really like that version...

  • do you mean paul young he is the one who sings it not paul carrak

  • oh yes - i meant paul young ... thx

  • Paul Carrack was a canditate to replace Phil Collins when he left Genesis. I kinda wish he had been picked. Nothing against Ray Wilson, but Carrack has a much stronger voice.....

  • ok I thinf of you. Very good ansowe rendition!! toal.

  • awesome.

  • Rutherford on the guitar sucks! Why didn't he play the bass??

  • It's fantastic to see Phil's solo songs played with Genesis!! :)

  • (I mean ''You Can't Hurry Love'').. :)

  • Never seen this before.. Quality!

  • Anyway Banks sounds fantastic on his "Shortcut to Somewhere"

  • Collins is SO OUT of his range Shortcut to Somewhere.... I think the guys only rehearsed at the soundcheck.....

  • Phil Collins is great in his way, but I'm

Sorry. This isn't freaking Genesis. You want

To see Genesis? Type Genesis Music box

    Now THAT'S Genesis!!!

  • Do you mean The Musical Box ? Big fan then !!!

  • You're right. My bad! But then all the old

stuff with Peter Gabriel is the real Genesis!

  • dude,, they do phil Collins stuff, Mike and the Mechanics stuff and the other one is crap, i don't know who's it is. Only that's all and tonight tonight tonight is are really genesis' and,, why would P.G.'s time only be REAL genesis,, that's nonsense!!

  • That's Phil's voice at its very best; it's wonderful to hear him sing "You can't hurry love" in the original key!

  • is all i need a miracle from mikes band

  • Yeah, that's a song by Mike + The Mechanics, released in 1985.

  • Lo que busqué este video, creo que tocaron en el Madison por el aniversario de Atlantic.

Gracias a quién lo subio, thanks

  • lower shortcut to somewhere a key and phil could sound better than fish on it.... i'm not a big fan of fish's voice but he did sound good on shortcut to somewhere... one of my favorite tony banks songs.... tony banks, one of the most underrated professionals in the business.... one of if not the best rock keyboard player i've ever seen...

  • Fish's original vocal on Shortcut to Somewhere so much better than Phil, vocally challenged, Collins....

  • phil collins is the most famous solo singers

  • Mike is 6'4". He's my height ^^

  • Its not the guitar thats small Rutherford is 9 foot tall in real life! fact

  • I love your fact although it isn't fact , lol. Mike is around 6 ft 2 in tall! Fact, look it up xD

  • that tiny guitar is ridiculous.

  • sweet I didn't know Phil brang te entire Genesis band with him even though most of the medley was the songs he did on his solo career

  • only you cant hurry love was a phil solo song.

shortcut to somewhere was really good, it's a shame that Tony never played a solo concert throughout his career.

  • it's ok I'm thinking Tony was a jazz keyboard player

  • No, classically trained though.

  • by the way I knew you can't hurry love was his solo career bu I thought those other 2 songs he did were part of his solo career but i know they're not so now i know

  • This band really sticks together & supports each other. Phil worked on a lot of Peter Gabriel's work. And Peter worked on Phil's "No Jacket Required".

  • oh Peter helped Phil when Phil was on his No Jacket Required Tour? just wondering

  • Great. Interesting to hear Tony & Mike chipping in on a 'Phil' song and Phil singing All I Need Is A Miracle.

  • Thanks so much for this. I've heard stories about this but never actually seen it. Wish I could have this on DVD :/

  • excellent

  • I was at this show all those years ago. With the exception of Zeppelin being just unbelivabley bad, it was an amazing day. CSN, Yes, Bee Gees, Steve Cropper, Foreigner and who the hell can remember anymore? Thanks for the post.

  • It was fun to hear Phil sing All I Need Is A Miracle.

  • They got out of sinc there towards the end but other than that this video is awesome! Do you have more!?

  • About all I have right now,if I find anymore I will post it.

  • For some reason I don't think this is a Genesis concert but some "event" where a ton of bands played.

  • Just updated info for this.

  • Sweet!
