this is realy gud i had to do an english essay on this and the charge of the light brigade it realy help it helped more than reading thee poem off paper
i don't think he is singing it too up beat for the poem at all. the poem is a representation of the ignorance of people, therefore the up beat tone of the song, in my opinion, is very fitting.
well said. relief, or disparity, or whatever: the surest cure for cliche. if you want to scare somebody, you don't play "tocatta in fugue." (which I can' spell.) it's a cliche now. ghosts these days ought to sing eerily cheerful stuff. if you want to make somebody feel as awfully sad as they ought to feel (about things like war, which our culture alternately ignores and celebrates, and always misunderstands), you don't sing a dirge: you sing, smiling, about cheerful things gone to hell.
I agree, but instead, I would say that the upbeat way its sung here suits the poem because the majority of Sassoon's war poetry is satirical and even sarcastic at times. He talks about such gruesome and miserable things in such a light, yet often aggressive way, that his poems really make an impression.
and also the rhyming structure makes it sound like a nursery rhyme, a bit like Jessie Pope's style so he may be criticising or making satire of her lack of experience?
i think that he hasn't shown the true feeling and emotion in this poem. it is a poem about a soldier who kills himself and it is not sung that way at all.
That's not true in my opinion. The guitar is up beat but if you listen carefully to his voice you can clearly hear the depression and sadness of his soul he puts into the song. The poem fits him very well, i think. Probably he considers himself that soldier of life who'd sometimes (or even often) rather like to shoot himself than to live on. But who knows...
i think deriving from the nme acceptance speech that him and carl are the soldiers fighting, and they are sick of the crowds media cheering when it just saddens them
Luckily for me, though, I am not. You're right, it's probably the secret of my being able to recite literature without fucking it up. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Pete Doherty and I think it's tragic what he's doing to himself, and I'm massively in favour of reciting poetry, especially Siegfried Sassoon. I guess I just think if you're going to plagiarise, you might as well do it properly.
plagarise? go on and fuck off, he's not passing it off as his own, numb nuts. Its a tribute and there is nothing shameful or deceitful about it...if he releases is as a single that says music and lyrics by Pete Doherty then maybe you'l have a point...maybe
Peter didn't write the lyics (originally poem) but lovely rendition.

He made more than one mistake...
'grinned AT life'
'CRUMPS and lice and lack of rum'
'bullet IN his brain'
'YOU smug-faced crowds'
and, like you said 'soldier LADS march by'
silverbiscuit 3 years ago
he didnt make mistakes, both doherty and barat are fans of sassoon, its called artistic license

Yeh, sorry but cramps instead of crumps is a blatant mistake.
