  • Are you Phil or are you a god? No, just predictable. How can people like you be so arrogant as to even suggest (out load I might add), that you are in communication with her divine holiness, or know what Phil was thinking when he wrote this song. Truth is, Phil did write it out of anger about his divorce. His wife, breaking with Tradition broke rule # 7 and ran off with a decorator. The bible is a book of regurgitated metaphors, written by men. Say hi to Her for me next time you are chatting.

  • @muzishunman

Here is what I do. I hear words and many in songs (as God leads me) and I then see a Biblical application that fits with the entire song. I am in communicaton with God, or He with me. Amos 3:7 "Surely the Lord GOD does nothing Unless He reveals His secret counsel To His servants the prophets." But you knew that because I am predictable, right? It's not about Phil's divorce per se (it's bigger than that, if that's even part of it). Obeying God is not Tradition (Rule 7).

  • @muzishunman

Obeying man is tradition. The Bible: God used men to write His words. And , "Hi sweetheart!" (Krystal).

  • It is about judgement being passed on a rapist and serving up some justice on him. It has nothing to do with the bible, or god, or what you believe. You are sounding like you are a bit of a crackpot. Incidentally there is only one person who knows what the song was written about and that is Phil. There is no god. It is only your belief that makes it real. There is Good and there is Evil. Maybe its a priest who diddles kids that is being judged. Just move him to another parish-that will teach em.

  • @muzishunman

Everything has to do with the Bible and God and He is real. I am sure Phil knows better than anyone but I think I am as close as anyone ever to what he means other than him. It can be and is about rapists. It can be and is about thiefs. It can be and is about murderers... etc.

  • I love this song

  • Its about him catching his wife cheating on him.

  • @spunkzehh

I believe that is either the cover story or that is what was the imputus for the lyrics. If you notice, it is written in a bold brush stroke so many people can attach many meanings to it, as good songs should be written if that is your objective. "I've seen your face before my friend but I don't know if you know who I am?" does not sound to me like he is speaking of someone he caught his wife with because everyone knew Phil Collins and surely so did that guy. It does not fit to me.

  • @spunkzehh

Beyond that I see all the truths in the song that I have scripture for. It is a song that is Biblically correct, if people see it or not. The bottom line: Repent and believe in Jesus or pay for your sins forever.

  • all this shite about jesus an god an all that shite......its a classic song, just enjoy it.

and before some bible basher comments me back sayin im a hethen or whatever, im not sayin the song ISNT about god or that there is no god or anything....im just sayin stop readin so much into music, stop trying to define its meaning, it means different things to different people and thats the beauty of it, so chill=]

    that is all

  • @CarlisleMusic

Yes. People do get different meanings from songs and this is what I got. Just as you have a right and a privilege to get what you do from music, and share that. I have a right and privilege to get what I get from music and share it. Also, being called by God to share His Truth I have a responsibility to let what He tells me be known. Matthew 10:27 What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops. Thanks!

  • i dont say a word, cause i write =)

  • @Mushdi

God bless you but that's not what that means and I know you know that (just prompting me to write and watch the video). It means they conceal their sin, or so they think. And if you write you are still saying words. Look at the Word as the example. A good example of this song is the murder that goes on at the Memphis Animal Shelter and possibly the judgemt Mayor Wharton and Matthew Pepper will endure if they do not repent.

  • @Mushdi

God told me this about the Memphis Animal Shelter and my communication with the Mayor. I was writing or talking about that and opened my Bible to this:

    Jeremiah 44:4-6

4'Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets, again and again, saying, "Oh, do not do this abominable thing which I hate."

5'But they did not listen or incline their ears to turn from their wickedness, so as not to burn sacrifices to other gods.

6'Therefore My wrath and My anger were poured out ...

  • This song is great :)

  • Amazing performance, wish i was there. Great guitarist, great beard from the bassist, and an extrodinary voice by phil collins. Im surprised he hasn't lost his voice like many other great vocalist after so many years

  • If God is all seeing, all knowing and powerful, why does he allow sin to happen in the first place? All knowing implies the knowledge of what will be, is and has been and with such knowledge surely it could be prevented or changed for the individual, otherwise they are damned from birth, destined.

I am not a god fearing man and have no belief in a higher power as such and I am not trying to troll, merely to try to understand the reasoning of such systems and trying to find my own path. Thank you

  • @tkdguruforme

God knows every move in the chess game of life and he works the best possible options for us ( which includes chstisement and punishment so we will learn) and we have the ability to say yes to Him or no. We can believe or not believe. Love and obedience of the heart can't be forced. So He gave us free will. We took that free will and we astray and that is sin. Without the ability to sin we do not have the real choice to love and obey.

  • great song, and I like the different perspective.

  • If I remember correctly this song is about his wife leaving him.

  • @DCToshi

    1. Good song writers write in ways to give them a cover story. If you pay attention, sometimes what they say a song is about makes much less sense than what you know it is about.

    2. They write in ways to have dual meanings. They can write about their ex-wife, for example, and the unrepentant sin of man and God's justice with the same words.

    3. God writes through what song writers write when they don't even know it.

It could be any combination of these or all of the above.

  • @TruthVsTradition I never thought of it that way. Thanks for the insight.

  • awesome !

  • my favourite song
