On Friday morning, January 23rd, 2004, I walked back to a friend's place, quarters in hand, to do some laundry, and looked up to see what a beautifully sunny morning it was in San Diego. I thought of the old "Good morning, Captain" show opening from the Mid-Seventies, and even began singing it. When I got in, I pulled up my AOL account to check email, and there was the posting of the passing of Bob Keeshan. I'd like to believe it was the Captain saying, "Thank you." for the song and memories.
I loved the Captain. His show was a part of who I am today. He would always remind us to say please and thank you, and our prayers. He was one of a kind.
Keeshan's show was off the air by 1986. I can understand why the network didn't want to invest in new episodes, but why wasn't it syndicated? Christian TV channels could've shown reruns of this.
PBS would've done better to rerun this than produce Barney and Kidsongs.
I was thinking recently, I believe Captain Kangaroo was the first TV show I ever watched... every morning, and years before kindergarten! Thanks for this video - I'm very moved by it.
Wow. I grew up watching Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans. Bunny Rabbitt, Mr. Moose and Dancing Bear always made me smile. And the cartoons shown were great too. Lariat Sam and his horse, Tippytoes, whose archnemesis, Badleands Meanie, was a hoot. And who could forget Tom Terrific with his dog, Manfred? What a wonderful way to start the morning. Thanks for the memories. RIP Bob and company.

Thanks again...and I, too, love your choice of "Karen's theme"!!
I met Bob Keeshan. He was in town promoting his book and we waited in line for over an hour to see him. I'd resolved not to say anything foolish, but the first thing my friend said was "We grew up on you, Captain Kangaroo." As he stood up to pose for a picture with me, my friend, and the girl who would become my wife, he looked up at me (I'm 6'6") and said "wow, this one really DID grow." Captain Kangaroo made a crack about my height. I'll remember that forever.
Fantastic presentation & tribute. Very fitting & respectful, just what he deserves. It was impossible to start a day without them. What a kind & gentle man, who let kids keep their innocence. I think it's fair to say he was all our hero. Along with Mr. Green Jeans, Mr. Moose & Bunny Rabbit. Oh, to hear those keys jingle again & start that theme song...perhaps in Heaven? Thanks & bless you for this work.
@rubicon1983 Thats the cool thing about our childhood years, they never seem to leave the mind. It was a time of innocence , wonder and many new discoveries imbedded in our souls to remember for a life time. Thanks for watching.
In 1996 I was fortunate to meet Bob Keeshan. He was a sweet and kind in person as he portrayed on the Captain Kangaroo show. Thanks for this video as it brought back many happy memories of my childhood.
I love this and I hope he knows how much we all loved him. I could never imagine a world without Captain Kangaroo. You did a beautiful job on this. Brought tears to my 50 year old eyes.
What a beautiful video. I remember him well; Captain Kangaroo was a favorite of mine while growing up. And, I don't think there could ever be a cuter pair than Mr. Moose and Bunny!! Cheers to a day when kids shows were clean, wholesome, and still innocent!! God Bless the little children.
Miss Captain Kangeroo very much. One can tell that he was very devoted to his work.Think this show came out at a time when children had no shows, he was heaven sent.Taught them how to laugh and play. The Captain adjusted through the years that is what is soo amazing, his show grew and he changed with the times. He was very popular even in the eighties. Amazing man.I took the show for granted growing up now i know it was very special.Brings tears to see the tribute to him happy ones of course
It is also sad that the first African American character from Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Baxter just passed away last week. Well he is up there with the Captain and Mr. Green Jeans. RIP to all.
Thanks for the compliment! It is easy to think of and say complimentary things about Mr. Keeshan. I undersrtand he was also a war hero. I am looking for more video of him and Mr. Moose. I want to add some similar gags to my presentations for our Children's Church and need some ideas. Can you help?
God bless you ... for making this I wan't really an avant watcher of his show when i was a small girl ... but this brought me to tears.. and made me think of my nephew (2)and niece (5) ... An i need to spend more time with them ... I love you my friend through Christ God Bless you
Beautifully done! If those of us who minister to kids on a daily basis can be as delightful as Captain Kangaroo and bring as much joy into their lives as Bob Keeshan did in ours, we will be a long way on the path to a successful life.
I grew up with Captain Kangaroo in the 1960s and early '70s, and watching this video brings back a lot of great memories. Thank you for this tribute to a true American hero. He is well loved, and greatly missed.
@videomix22 Like others here, I want to thank you, . That comforting, all accepting voice is now in all of us who watched and listened for so many years..
I remember watching Bob keeshan from way back when I was but a tiny girl at the age of 1 and I always sat in the middle of the living room floor. He always had a smile on my face he was such a blessing to watch. I am sad that they don't play his show any more where i live now it would be such a blessing to see them bring back his show!
I want to tell you a short story. My Mom and Dad were alcoholics and at times very abusive. This man showed me that the world could be kind and entertaining. I never missed a show. He was such a gentle soul and I often found comfort and safety for the short time the show played (30 minutes or so maybe an hour). I wish I could have thanked him in person. I wrote him once and asked for an autographed picture but I never heard back. I miss the gift he shared with us all.
@rick71457 - There is an interview with Bob Keeshan on youtube, In part 7 of 7, he is asked what his image is. He names many things that he has heard from people, and what you said here was close to the top of his list. He was a friend to children who were in abusive families.
He was clearly overwhelmed by all the different things people told him. A little embarassed to be so idolized. I hope you can take comfort in his knowledge of how he helped people in your predictament. Very cool.
@alstrand - I sometimes still wake up and sing the "Good Morning Captain" Theme song from his later show. LOL! As an actor he could have made a different decision - a different choice in his pursuits but I am so grateful he chose children shows because he became a friend to ME.
That was a good wholesome kid's show---nowadays they'd probably have to curse and sing filthy rap songs and make fun of christians, Jesus/GOD to be accepted!!!
At 0:53 you show a picture of the Howdy Doody Cast on its 10th anniversary. That is not Bob Keeshan as Clarabell. Keeshan left the show in 1952. In 1957 in which that picture was taken, Lew Anderson played Clarabell the clown. Nice tribute anyway.
@TheGoodCrop You're right..what most histories do not record is that Keeshan didn't leave but was summarily fired for being part of a group of people on Bob Smith's show that hired the same agent, this according to Keeshan.
@articzoo No, Bob Keeshan was my childhood hero. He helped me to become the successful person I am today. Because of him, I show respect and care to everyone I come in contact with everyday. Im a full time foster care provider in my home for children that are medically involved and I feel Im blessed to have these special children in my home, and in my life. Thanks for watching.
@videomix22 Well sir, my grandparents kept over fifty wellfare children over the years--many of these children had bad psychological problems caused from the abuse and neglect they were subjected to--SO I SALUTE YOU for doing for those children what you have done--GOD BLESS YOU FOR THAT! I loved the Captain Kangaroo show as a child--it was so fun and entertaining to a young child
As an old School. I grew up wid the cap. It sheds tears every time when watching anything cap. I wish for the younger years, i just miss it soooooo,...............
Thank you for this video tribute to Bob Keeshan aka Captain Kangaroo...I was born in 1961 and have very fond memories of the show....Also, thank you for playing "Karen's Theme" for the background music of your video montage...It also brings a tear to my eye for the late Karen Carpenter.
wow i never knew the captain and Clarabelle were the same person my eyes are open for the first time thx for the memorys BOB!!!! you are sorely missed by all 70's and 80's baby's and thx to you videomix22 for the uppage great vid.....
Thanx for the clip. CK was one of my boyhood heroes as well. This is an awful time to be a human being, I feel. Violence, insensitivity, ignorance - the whole thing. It's hard sometimes to feel that there are actual PEOPLE with hearts and minds who care about others. Then you think that there have been folks like Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Rogers, and many others that have made, and still do make (even though they may seem hard to find) the world at least tolerable. Thanks again.
I remember watching the Captain every day and then when they switched to just Saturdays. He got me through being in the hospital in an oxygen tent; scared to death as a four year old, clinging to a doll. I remember Mr. Greenjeans passing away and crying. I still can remember one of the silly little sketches that they had on the show with "The Line Man"!! LOL It was so cute!! Now I'm gonna go pull out the old photos and sniff a lot!! Thanks for the memory jostle! :)
:........((( Thank you for this tribute... In honesty, my mornings were never the same in childhood when the show was first relegated to once a week on Saturdays and then gone altogether...... Thank you Captain Kangaroo, Mr Greenjeans, Dennis (the Painter), Granfather Clock, BunnyRabbit, and of course, Mr Moose and his ping-pong balls... i'm gonna go cry like a baby for a little while....
Thanks for posting this. My earliest childhood TV memory is watching Captain Kangaroo....and I loved watching his show. He broughts so many smiles to so many children. Rest in Peace, Captain. XO
Thank you for making and posting this. It takes us back to much better times, moving us deeply during the journey.
I stopped on the Cartoon Network Saturday to see two animated characters kissing, he on top of her as she lay sleeping. I was mortified! Wrong on so many levels.
Somewhere along the way, we squeezed out all that was good, such as the shows that
Thanks for such a great tribute. Bob Keeshan was a childhood hero of mine to .I loved Captain Kangaroo my favorite parts were the segments with Mr Green Jeans and when Mr Moose would make ping pong balls fall on his head .I will always remember the captain.
I am deeply moved by your tribute to our dear Captain, Mr. Bob Keeshan. May his memory be eternal. What a pity that kids nowadays haven't anyone remotely like him as a TV presence in their lives. Together with Fred Rogers, the gang at CTW/Sesame Street/The Electric Company, Zoom, and Romper Room, it is rare if ever that today's children are exposed to safe, uncommercialized wise, gentle, older people on TV who'll share a laugh, a smile and remind them how important they are.
My Brother and I loved the Captain and watched him everyday. Nice video! Thanks for this tribute to this great man who was also a war hero. Do you remember the episode with Gerumph?
i'm 40 thanks for the memories and making a tough cuban american cry like a baby dude..this clip priceless great job,We do miss the Capt. and the Mr Rogers all theese kids have now is Xbox play station..yuk
I adored Captain kangaroo as a child. And I always laughed at the rabbit with his carrots, and the Mr. Moose would always pelt the captain with ping pong balls!
Loved Captain Kangaroo as a kid! I was a 70s/80s kid. Saw so many of the "new" in the 80's shows, and was lucky to be able to see the "old" 50s 60s ones also! Very nice tribute to Bob and his crew! Childrens television was so innocent then.
Well, this is a wonderful, moving post. Can't remember much about Captain Kangaroo, except that I used to watch him and Mr. Greenjeans everyday. Grew up in Toronto, Canada. We used to get all the USA stations out of Buffalo. Captain Kangaroo, and locally from Buffalo; Rocket Ship 7, and Commander Tom. Those were innocent days friends. God Bless.
congratulations.....I am a grown man and this videoclip left me not misty eyed, but just flat sobbing. Not so much for Bob Keeshan, who lived a long, wonderful life, but for a whole lot of other stuff that had died including, but not limited to my childhood and its time period, my grandparents, etc, etc...A lot of todays problems go back to the fact that there is no longer a "captain kangaroo..Mr.Rogers, or a miss Frances" for the kids...all they have to settle for is Barney and the teletubbies.
Thanks for this beautiful tribute. I grew up with Captain Kangaroo. I remember watching before kidergarten and even watched him when I was in college! I was never too old for the Capatin.
In the mid 70's before I was in kindergarten, I would get up early to watch Captain Kangaroo while my older brother got ready for school. I laughed every single time the ping-pong balls fell :) And I loved Mr. Green Jeans as well as the Captain!
Nice job. What a shame that this wonderful man and his wonderful CBS show couldn't go on forever and ever. What do the kids have now that's even comparable?
Thanks so much for bringing back such warm memories for me. The first thing I did in the morning was watch the captain. Life was so much simplier in those days. It's a shame the children of today will never know what it was like.
I couldn't wait to see what he was going to do next. I am thinking of him tonight because I lost my mother last Christmas and she was so like him. She had a daycare center in the 60's she named Treasureland and she still had children writing her even up into her 80's that she had taught there. I wish we had more people in this world like the Captain and my mother.
he was a hero to ALL the kids who were born in the 50-60's. he was the father to those who had no father and a friend to those who had no friends. i'm soon to be 46 and still remember watching him with my younger sister in our t.v. room playing around with our cars and dolls. how life was so much simpler when we were young and had not a care in the world! thank you for such a loving tribute to a wonderful human being. thank you captain kangaroo.
Thank you for these beautiful memories!!! My brothers and I watched the Captain before going off to school every morning. Nothing even begins to compare with his love and sensitivity to children today.
when i was 10 yrs old in 1962 my father had introduced me to him much to my surprise when he lived over in babylon n y he was as nice as he was on t v
My father brought him to Indianapolis,Indiana and sponsered him. Dad invented a cardboard chair that was easy tp put together and they would bring on a baby elephant to stand on it without it being crushed. My sisters were on the show too. A long long time ago..
On Friday morning, January 23rd, 2004, I walked back to a friend's place, quarters in hand, to do some laundry, and looked up to see what a beautifully sunny morning it was in San Diego.

The background music is superb! You have excellent taste. May I inquire as to the title and composer of the music?

Thank you for making and posting this. It takes us back to much better times, moving us deeply during the journey.
I stopped on the Cartoon Network Saturday to see two animated characters kissing, he on top of her as she lay sleeping. I was mortified! Wrong on so many levels.
Somewhere along the way, we squeezed out all that was good, such as the shows that
dpjaexp lists below, and replaced with all bad.

I couldn't wait to see what he was going to do next. I am thinking of him tonight because I lost my mother last Christmas and she was so like him. She had a daycare center in the 60's she named Treasureland and she still had children writing her even up into her 80's that she had taught there. I wish we had more people in this world like the Captain and my mother.
ccampbell16 2 years ago
he was a hero to ALL the kids who were born in the 50-60's. he was the father to those who had no father and a friend to those who had no friends. i'm soon to be 46 and still remember watching him with my younger sister in our t.v. room playing around with our cars and dolls. how life was so much simpler when we were young and had not a care in the world! thank you for such a loving tribute to a wonderful human being. thank you captain kangaroo.
