I can't get enough of this vid. From 2.30 to the end of the solo, is one of the funkiest things I've ever heard. Scofields solo ain't bad either! Ha ha
steve swallow has such a weird style... Pick-style, with an acoustic-electric bass guitar, in JAZZ??? Sounds to me like that belongs more in a violent femmes cover band. Great player though.
Scofield is what I'd call a risky player.. he isn't afraid to step out of the box and do what he feels suits the music. Can he not play the shit out of that Artstar?! Makes me want to give up entirely.
And also if you cant seem to get a specific sound out of a cymbal, its okay to mess around with it, use a sizzle or put a small peice of tape on the cymbal for a dry sound, for these artists playing for as long as they have, they know what they like,
for mrjmaxwell, Bill uses the Zildjian K Custom Complex Dry Ride II. But on occasion he uses the Zildjian K Custom Dark Series and also Zildjian K Constantinople Medium Thin High Ride.
Listen to that funky lick at 0:12, Scofield simply just never runs out of ideas, as an improviser and a composer and its always all his own. The absolute man.
Bill Stewart is so the man, aside from his amazing limb independence, i love the sound he gets out of his cymbals and drums, anyone know specifically what model cymbals he uses?
Miles didn't have chops? Try playing along with Tony Williams at a hundred billion miles an hour on a tune with 30 chord changes in front of 5 thousand people while Tony is mad at you. Try playing Freedom Jazz Dance on the effin trumpet.
Bill Steward is one of our planet's finest musicians! He makes music for both trained and nontrained ears. But it requires a certain amount of openness to enjoy it. If you fucked up your senses with cheap EGO-music before, you will not be capable of appreciating this wonderful artist!! ;)
ummm the best drum solo youve ever heard? you need to spend more time on youtube then. there are 12 year olds on here that had a better solo than that!
Yes there are drum solo's by people like Tony Royster Jr. who have chops, but the musicality and melodic playing along with the independence and intense groove that continues during the solo is something that is rare. Only two other drummers could play a solo like Bill Stewart did, one is Brian Blade and the other is Art Blakey. Chops aren't everything. Miles didn't have chops.

@mrjmaxwell Bill's symbols are the Zildjian Dry Complex. It's modeled after a K he had with a crack in it that he liked the "trashiness" of.
