Google had the right idea with the Android platform, but in practice it's not as good as it should be.

Cell phones, no matter what OS they are running on, are locked so tight with their carriers that they can only be open so much. Sure, developers like openness, but the iPhone OS, or the Windows Mobile platform both have a developing group that is larger than G1's.

If they really wanted to make Android open, they'd let users put it on WinMo and iPhone as a secondary OS.
