@MewTwoZX: Yeah, but it's very limited, that's way I hardly ever use it. You can do a lot more with HTML. I think Game Maker was designed as a simplistic HTML to help teach beginners. But I'm not a beginner anymore, I'm almost a pro!

By the way, I don't believe any of those games in this video were created by Game Maker, I think this is a joke vodeo, to insult Game Maker's limited abilities, and not a very funny joke either.

Well, only if you start making scripts in it, and not only using the basic stuff provided by the icons in the objects. Maybe you've seen game maker a long ago, like 4.3 or something like that. Now you can create easily a 3D shooter if you know a thing or two about directx. All these games could be created by game maker, really.

@TopDownPanic Sadly i was talking about 7.0... And yes, i totally agree about the icons for the beginners, but after that you can make scripts too, and they work well. I dont know much about html codes, but i always looked at game maker as an easy to use oo programming software, but with a little help fo the beginners. But yeah, the games above must be pretty impossible without scripting, but game maker can do that too =)

I just started making games with gamemaker 8.0 lite and I cant figure out how to make a cross hair like at 00:58 any help would be appreciated.

1. Create the sprite, can be any size.

2. Create an object and set it's sprite to the sprite you created earlier.

3. In the step event, insert execute code in the right menu,use this code:

y=mouse_y;

}

4. You may need to adjust the position, or the origin in the sprite.

It's games from 2009, that's the whole point. RinkuHero's excellent 100 Gm Games in 10 minutes covers the "all time" category. Besides, Pi: Mind encircled is from '06 and Ninjavity is from '07. All that said, it has many truly great games, it's a matter of opinion.

You talk as if flash is a step up to game maker, and I'm telling you that you're horribly mistaken. Sure the interface may be harder to you or whatever, but in the end you don't have anymore control over anything that you do in Game maker and its possibilities aren't even near it. The only thing that flash probably has over game maker is that I've seen it do some math better, but that hardly evens things out.

Flash and Game Maker are DIFFERENT. Firstly, it's not even clear what you mean when you say Flash. AS3 can be used in the Flash IDE, but it can also be used in alternate code based IDEs like FlashDevelop and augmented with libraries like Flixel and FlashPunk. They are suited to different things. Just because they teach AS3 at generic college #8 doesn't mean it is harder to learn; in fact I found AS3 much faster to learn than GML, but that's just me. Different strokes for different folks.

I really think that people shouldn't compare programs that create games in a completely different way, honestly I like Game Maker more than Flash because it can do the same things,you can upload it to Yoyogames to be played like a Flash game would be on NewGrounds or some other Flash site, or you can have it as a stand alone exe file, I'm learning flash but I will never leave behind Game Maker for it. And who knows, someone might have a harder time learning GML over Flash.

Yes you can, Right from the save button in the menubar is a button to make stand-alone executables. Simpley click on the button. wait for a sec and you're done :)

2. Depends on who hosts your site. If the service allows ZIP folders, you can put your game into one and put it online. If not, you can use another site that allows the distribution of ZIP folders and link your site to it. I'd recommend that if you've made a big game or if application distribution isn't allowed.

Yes, but there were a number of other huge titles left out because of their WIP status (namely Climb to the Top of the Castle, Save the Panet, Cochone's Pursuit, etc. ) On the other hand, there are a number of games in there that were 2008 WIPs that only got finished this year (namely Spelunky and Umbrella Adventure). I figure the WIPs can go in this years video when they are done :D

Hey when u finish your game can you save it as some file so any computer can play or do they need gamemaker also?

Gamemaker isn't needed to play gamemaker games. Save the game as an executable and put it in a folder with whatever the game needs to work. Most people usually just include the background music, so nothing is usually needed. I tested it myself and found that it works no problem with the executable alone. Download a few gamemaker games and you'll see what they usually have in their folders.
