Also Agreed that Lawler was so much better back in the 90s as a heel commentator. He was hilarious and like Jesse Ventura he always supported the heels and made an effort to justify their actions.
Agreed that J.R is over-rated. He was great back in the early 90s with Jesse Ventura and Bobby Heenan in WCW and excellent in the late 90s in the WWF but post 2000 he's just gotten old and out of touch, he often forgets wrestlers names and doesn't get excited or pumped up anymore unless it's a Wrestlemania main-event. He's in my top 5 but he'd be #5 behind Joey Styles, Bobby Heenan, Gorilla Monsoon and my favorite, Jesse Ventura.

In hindsight one could argue he gave it away, but at the time it would have fit right in

By now doesn't anyone already Michael Cole is the WORST ANNOUNCER EVER? You look at him and you see the word LOSER on his forehead. He rips on Bryan Danielson and every other face but puts over John Cena. Tweener play-by-play announcer?! Lawler's a shell of his former self and should really quit while he's ahead. Nowadays, he sounds old, boring and only shows some semblance of emotion when D-X or Cena come out. He won't even squeal like a pig when puppies are around! Cole's a fucking carwreck and he deserves to be assaulted by Striker's potshots ad infinitum on PPV.
@PhilipEbanks: Look, the reason that even the announcers--except,maybe Cole, whom most people hate--suck now & are force-fed lines to make them shells of what they once were is because of the world in general becoming politically correct. Not to bash on any stereotype, but when you've got Lawler not being able to go ga-ga over "puppies" or firing Matt Striker for telling the truth about Cena's Superman gimmick & Cole's bad commentating, something is seriously wrong.
@TherealRNO: I fully agree with you in that PC is a pivotal factor in the devolution of the WWE's commentary team. In fact, it's very likely to be the only aspect that anti-PG WWE fans' criticism has legitimacy on.
-Jim Ross = Overrated -Tony Schiavone = Underrated (WWE won so he got no credit which is bullshit) -Jesse Ventura = Great -Gorilla Monsoon = Great -Bobby Heenan = Great -Jerry Lawler = OK - Macho Man = Decent -Mike Tenay = Very knowledgable -Mark Madden = Terrible -Taz = OK -Vince McMahon = Fake, generic
The best ever were Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura. They complimented each other very well. McMahon was generic and fake when he was announcing. That is evident especially after knowing his personality now. Jim Ross is an asskisser who is only considered the best announcer by WWE because they won the Monday night wars. Tony Schavione was a better announcer than Jim Ross in my book.
ok how was mcmahon fake? u sayin ppl have to stay the same way after 2 decades?? ppl cant change.... if u believe that ur a fool.... and i aint sayin schavonie was a bad commentator cuz he was really good im just sayin JR was a really good announcer and him and Lawler knew how to make fans like or dislike wrestlers
Scottfire, you sir are smoking crack if you don't think Vinnie Mac was the greatest commentator of all time. Vince was classic, with his delayed reaction: "one, two, three, he got em, he got em., no! wait, two count."
I totally agree on your thoughts about Schiavone, and he was one of my favorite announcers. He knew what to get over. I wish he'd come back to wrestling. I've also liked all of Jim Ross' work from every promotion and era untill around 05 or so, where it just seems likes hes been phoning it in since then. And good mention on Joey Styles brief Raw run, as for those first few weeks, he was fucking awsome. Something totally new that Raw needed at the time, and to be honest, still does.
Really great insight guys. I just discovered your site and I think you guys are awesome. I have been a wrestling fan since I was 4. I am 30 now..but I honestly cant stand the product anymore, of any of the promotions. I buy the DVD's of classic stuff but that is about it. But on the subject of commentators, the best duo was Heenan and Monsoon. I recorded their stuff long ago and I still laugh at it. I rewind it time and time again so I can here "WILL YOU STOP!!?" Great stuff. Keep it up guys.
I was watching Taz too on tna and four or so weeks in and he's still saying who's this guy what's his deal. This leads to Mike telling him about the guy ie sharke boy say. This is a nightmare, he comes into the product saying how cool it was to do WWE shows (fact) and then admits he know's nothing about TNA or any of their guys. He has took a huge dump on the product in my mind. I actually feel bad for Don West. Damnn has it come to that???
So, is WWE the only wrestling you guys have watched? Solie is the greatest hands down. Jim Ross was always great because he approached it as if it were legitimate and not scripted. Bob Caudill was a great voice from the past. My personal favorite was Les Thatcher, but he was never in WWF so you probably never heard of him either.
Instead of being a dick, you could simply give your opinions, but since you want to be snide, I'll give it right back to you : It's hilarious you say Jim Ross approached it as if it were legtimate and not scripted because 1. No shit, you're supposed to 2. Solie didn't? You didn't even spell Bob Caudle right, and coming to the conclusion we've only ever watched WWF is bad enough, so next time you want to look down on people over the internet, do it on someone else's videos, prick
hum commentators is a hard one, because even if they are good, you become jaded to them. Heenan is my favorite for sure, and if you say Heenan then yo got to say Monsoon. Schiavone is very underrated, but not great, and J.R. when he is on, he is ON, but lately I believe is slowly going insane....WHISPER IN THE WIND! Dusty is the worst btw
Lord Alfred Hayes. he was dignified, he knew the moves, he was a veteran of the game. he brought an element that was cool and collected when the match was slow paced and high energy when thing picked up. that's my 2 cents.
honestly, i loved listening to raven talk on sunday night heat...He was probably the most technical guy i can remember, I remember during a match with rvd, coach made a comment about rvd and how fast he is, and raven turned around and said "hes really not that fast, if you watch him the movements he makes make him appear fast but in reality he's not" where else would you here comments like that
Michael Cole is probably the worst wrestling announcer going today. He's very generic, very bland and very annoying, especially when there's a rest hold taking place during the middle of a match, Tenay is more tolerable than Michael Cole.
Gorilla Monsoon's brilliance was that he elevated every commentator he worked with whether it was Jesse, Bobby Heenan, Nick Bockwinkle, Lord Alfred Hayes, Mean Gene, or Dick Graham. He made all of then look good.
probably not a popular choice, but i actually liked the combo of micheal cole and taz from the starting point of the brand split up until 05. sure taz is a former shell of himself, and michael wasn't that passionate. the voice of cole and the swagger of taz helped me believe that smackdown was the hipper of the two brands at the time..
i liked old lawler, i guess with age he lost his touch
I gotta agree. I liked the balance they had as a pair. They kept each other in check. When Taz/Cole first paired together, Taz still had that passion, making of for Cole's subdued style. They didn't always agree, and that's what made it work. As Lawler and JR got older, they settled into extremely old routines, while Cole and Taz had fun commentating. And I think they made the "I gotta defend my partner from getting the crap beat out of him" thing work better than Lawler/JR did.
I used to love Monsoon; I remember his great matches with Bruno Sammartino--you know, the champion whose name Chris Jericho can't seem to remember; Monsoon was usually great as an announcer; he was unusually vicious, biased and downright asinine in his remarks about the great Bull Nakano in her notable run in WWE; Asinine? He had the b**ls to call her a "beached whale"--this f**king guy weighed over 400 lbs in the 1960's-Give me a f**king break, to coin a phrase.
it might be the pot calling the kettle black, but it made me laugh. and thats the point, to entertain. he also refered to Bastion Booger as a "fat pig", when we all obviously knew that he himself was a "fat pig" as well. laugh a little, have a giggle, its refreshing. ;)
Sorry Monsoon mark, Fatso was probably doing Don Vinnie's work in sliming Nakano--just the best women's wrestler the WWE ever had and they have had and some great ones. By the way, what the hell was so funny about what he said about Nakano--or what he did not sayl--never had a single f&&king thing to say to complement even her wrestling ability; remember, Monsoon mark, it is a woman we are talking about you asshole!
ummm, no I have no idea. but I do know what makes me laugh. maybe you should be more passionate about things that directly affect your life, not what a dead wrestler you've never met said about a woman wrestler you'll also never meet. ahh the prioreties of a bleeding heart.
1. You have never met me; so you do not know what things I feel passionate about--except here I can tell you: Nakano was a great wrestler and a great champion and a great woman--that is something a man can feel passionate about;
2. You sense of humor sucks;
3. Actually I met Monsoon many years ago at a wrestling show back in NJ;
4. Don't bet against me meeting Bull Nakano;
5. "Priorities" is the way you spell the word--laugh that one off.
My favorite teams (in order) are Monsoon/Ventura, Attitude-era JR/Lawler, McMahon/anybody in the 80's, Schiavone/Heenan/Tenay, Taz/Cole when Smackdown was about Angle, Lesnar & "cruiserweights", and Cole/JBL. I SO agree with the Taz & the TNA team (Tenay/West) comments. When Smackdown changed Taz was exposed 4 the stuttering jackass that he is. I hated when Foley left & Taz had 2 team with JR on Smackdown.
It's great to hear nice words about Tony Schiavone. How can you guys not have mentioned when Stevie Ray joined the Thunder announce team? It was so bad it was kind of good, but really hard to listen to!
i love going back after a while and watching the older videos because its like i just forget about what was said word for word so i always laugh again! oh and nod my head
Heenan and Monsoon were a comedy duo. "What you be serious?" Legends. But when i think about Heenan I can't help but thinki about Hogan's NWO turn and the "Who's side is he on?" Comment, I cringe everytime I hear it.
I actually liked Jim Ross, King and Vince, pre-attitude era. JR's attitude era was awesome, same with King and his one liners. JR added the drama and exaggeration, HBK V Taker Hellin a cell '97 for example.
It's a shame that Tazz is leaving because I thought he was a good commentator. He and Michael Cole together were a fine WWE announce team. I know others will have opinions, but Smackdown was my only show b4 I got internet & cable!
cynical joey styles in the original ecw as well as during the one night stands was good. Booker t would actually be a great play by play commentator while Elijah Burke was good at color commentary the 1 time wwe put him on the mike. im surprised you didn't mention Micheal Cole and what are your guy's opinions on the roh commentary team?
I can't stand Sean Mooney as a commentator. Thankfully he was relegated to Coliseum video and Primetime but man. He's never excited for anything. Can you imagine?.. "Lord Alfred Hayes you have to be glad your out here with me watching this incredible encounter instead of in there..as the Hulkster slams the massive Andre the Giant.....what a match here for all the great fans here in the dome. They have to be pleased...."
Striker sounds so full of BS to me I'm sorry. I watched Christian's return(On DVR after I heard it happened and went ECW? oh yeah my roomate DVRs that) and his...um..."This is a moment where you call your friends up because you know they're watching and you enjoy it together...? I usually call my friends to let them know because THEY ARE NOT WATCHING. and who the F*** besides my room mate watches ECW religiously anyway? I tried. but Its boring.
The guy with the ponytail? that is awesome man. you opinion means so much now. Pay Attention when they introduce themselves. his name is Eric, yanno...The Host?
Holy ****...I thought I was the only person in the world who liked Tony Schivone! until as you guys mentioned...they started feeding him lines. I use to love Tony and Bobby's little digs at each other. "The Heenan Book of Cheats" I don't remember the match but that line Tony said after Bobby said something like "You got to hook the tights" "It's only cheating if you get caught"
Nice show. I just can't concentrate when I tune in to TNA. There is just too much shouting. If someone does a huge spot like in Ultimate X for example, I expect some emotion. But my goodness, "ARMBAR TAKEOVER!!!" I am begging for them to just relax..
but I was thinking if I was commentator, I'd care about moves being done. but I doubt I have the voice to BE on the show. I probably be just as annoying as those guys in ROH LOL!
Striker's ok. I mean, people LOVE him, which shows to qualify as "good" in most people's eyes is to name a couple dates and facts(or should I say, be allowed to say dates & facts?). Grisham can blow me. Actually, my new favorite team is Josh Mathews & Dusty Rhodes on FCW. Mathews does the same "dates & facts smart marks love" stuff Striker does, but Dusty is ridiculously & hilariously odd as usual, and it makes it sound like WCW Sat. Night so I dig it :) Plus the Solie clip at the end rules
michael cole is the worst fucking announcer ever,every move a wrestler like undertaker or michaels does is vintage to him.best announcer....hmmmm gonna have to go with gorilla monsoon,he had such a low booming voice that had that great effect on you.
Tony Schivony is not even in the same class as JR. Why Joey Styles is not on TV anymore is beyond me. You guys just lot alot of credibility for dissing those guys.
I liked joey, jerry and coach, three men on raw. I think pacman should be an annoucer. I think Striker is a pretty good annoucer but this was before striker existed as an annoucer.
Bobby Heenan comentating during the Royal Rumble when Flair entered as #3 and won it, was some of the best color comentating ever IMO!!! The funniest reactions ever. Him flipping out and rooting, and begging for Flair to survive along with Flair's performance and reactions to moments like Piper coming in to give him the beats was gold. Heenan owned in commentary that night.
Remember the Owen Hart heel turn on Brett Hart. I loved Ted Dibiases commentary on that match. Also Heenas at the survivor series Harts vs Micheals team was comic gold.
Taz is one of my favorite wrestlers but he cut his own nuts off when he satdown in the commentary seat.He has no edge of a champion nor of a former wrestler.And just b/c he stands up every now and then for kayfabe purposes doesnt not still make him "hardcore"
I completely disagree on your comments about Tazz - you think he should be saying he could kick Kane's ass?! a commentator's job is to get talent over, not themselves. You should separate his wrestling personality with his announcing personality
We didn't used to be a YouTube partner, so we had to stick within their 10 minute guidelines. We're a partner now so we have a little more leeway,but we're used to the format too, and I think it's good for two reasons 1. Breaks help us keep the topics focused, less rambling, and give us time to go over our notes and reorganize. 2. There's always a little, or a lot, more to be said. That's where you fans come in!
But I like Don West, while out there some times I like to hear different view points, and I like for some to hold the faces accountable . Like calling out AJ for those sneak attacks on Booker.. and Joe for trying to kill people .
I hate Taz (tazz lol..). Jim Ross used to be so much better than he is now. He isnt allowed to call matches anymore, just harp on about useless crap. And yes, thats why I liked Tenay on Nitro, he told you wtf you WANTED to hear. Joey Styles to me is the best of the newer breed of commentators. He was the voice of ECW, and brought excitement to the show. Cole is just decent, thats about it.
FINALLY someone gave tony schiavone some fkn cred! IMO hes given crap for almost no reason. larry zybysko on the other hand SUCKED. he was only interesting when he was fighting hall. I have to disagree about the heel commentators somewhat. I kinda hated it. I didnt need the announcers harping on and on about whatever, I knew who were heels and faces and who were tweeners. I think your hate of JBL blinds you about his ability as a commentator as well. JBL was actually pretty good.
I Like Ventura...How Much DId Vinces Voice Change from when he was a commentator....anyone feel me on that?? I Know i used to love when michael buffer would come out....i like schivone...DUSTY RHODES COUNTRY AS HELL LOL....they all created a wcw sound
Bobby heenan during the 92 royal rumble when he was rooting for flair was the most entertaining piece of commentary i've ever heard bar none...and i agree fuck jbl i thought he sucked.
I was watching Wrestlemania III yesterday(Steamboat/Savage) and Ventura's commentary made one of the BEST I.C. Title matches EVER almost unbearable to watch. Jesse Ventura was ALMOST as bad as Mike Adamle to listen to. I honestly believe that Matt Striker is one of the BEST announcers in the business today. So much better with the stick than in the ring, plus if it wasn't for him Grisham would be lost; as he is already an idiot of Ventura/Adamle like proportions!
Im sorry I know some people dont like him but obviously Im gonna say Joey Styles an amazing commentator along and also I loved Bobby Heenan listening to old matches he commentated he was just great the worst though by no contest has to be Michael Cole
Damn right I will. We said he was good up until he was fed terrible lines like that, and despite how bad he was the last couple years n WCW, I stand by that. In fact, I say he should be in the HOF. So there! :p
Tenay is awful always pulling that yoda face, he was good as the thrid man in wcw. And all West does is scream, fuck! Ohhhhh Coach is all forgiven? Well no but thanks for coming. Ps Tempestkane the round table don't need to do anything I really hate TNA fans (die hard fans)
coach was good as a heel third man because when he was third man lawler was starting to go face so it balanced it out. but yeah he was horrible as a color guy
ventura/moonsoon and heenen and moonsoon were great

That is evident especially after knowing his personality now. Jim Ross is an asskisser who is only considered the best announcer by WWE because they won the Monday night wars. Tony Schavione was a better announcer than Jim Ross in my book.
scoresby33 2 years ago
ok how was mcmahon fake? u sayin ppl have to stay the same way after 2 decades?? ppl cant change.... if u believe that ur a fool.... and i aint sayin schavonie was a bad commentator cuz he was really good im just sayin JR was a really good announcer and him and Lawler knew how to make fans like or dislike wrestlers

Scottfire, you sir are smoking crack if you don't think Vinnie Mac was the greatest commentator of all time. Vince was classic, with his delayed reaction: "one, two, three, he got em, he got em., no! wait, two count."

What I liked about Ventura was, although a heel commentator, he always gave credit where credit was due to the faces.

I made the mistake of watch TNA the other day hearing Taz was like a nam veteran smelling napalm.
TheWrestlingLantern 2 years ago
So, is WWE the only wrestling you guys have watched? Solie is the greatest hands down. Jim Ross was always great because he approached it as if it were legitimate and not scripted. Bob Caudill was a great voice from the past. My personal favorite was Les Thatcher, but he was never in WWF so you probably never heard of him either.
macdaddyjb 2 years ago
Instead of being a dick, you could simply give your opinions, but since you want to be snide, I'll give it right back to you : It's hilarious you say Jim Ross approached it as if it were legtimate and not scripted because 1. No shit, you're supposed to 2. Solie didn't? You didn't even spell Bob Caudle right, and coming to the conclusion we've only ever watched WWF is bad enough, so next time you want to look down on people over the internet, do it on someone else's videos, prick

Gorilla & Heenan were fucking awesome. Nuff Said. They should've done a buddy cop film.
stevestoner13 2 years ago 3
hum commentators is a hard one, because even if they are good, you become jaded to them.
DeathAdder83 2 years ago 2
Lord Alfred Hayes. he was dignified, he knew the moves, he was a veteran of the game. he brought an element that was cool and collected when the match was slow paced and high energy when thing picked up. that's my 2 cents.

Michael Cole is probably the worst wrestling announcer going today. He's very generic, very bland and very annoying, especially when there's a rest hold taking place during the middle of a match, Tenay is more tolerable than Michael Cole.
lildwayne21 2 years ago 6
Gorilla Monsoon's brilliance was that he elevated every commentator he worked with whether it was Jesse, Bobby Heenan, Nick Bockwinkle, Lord Alfred Hayes, Mean Gene, or Dick Graham. He made all of then look good.

skinwalkerxxx 2 years ago 3
probably not a popular choice, but i actually liked the combo of micheal cole and taz from the starting point of the brand split up until 05. sure taz is a former shell of himself, and michael wasn't that passionate. the voice of cole and the swagger of taz helped me believe that smackdown was the hipper of the two brands at the time..
i liked old lawler, i guess with age he lost his touch
thedrifter 2 years ago 3

RPenta 2 years ago
it might be the pot calling the kettle black, but it made me laugh. and thats the point, to entertain. he also refered to Bastion Booger as a "fat pig", when we all obviously knew that he himself was a "fat pig" as well. laugh a little, have a giggle, its refreshing. ;)
billyspurr 2 years ago
Sorry Monsoon mark, Fatso was probably doing Don Vinnie's work in sliming Nakano--just the best women's wrestler the WWE ever had and they have had and some great ones. By the way, what the hell was so funny about what he said about Nakano--or what he did not sayl--never had a single f&&king thing to say to complement even her wrestling ability; remember, Monsoon mark, it is a woman we are talking about you asshole!
RPenta 2 years ago
By the way, do you even know anything about Nakano, Joshi, women's wrestling, Madusa, and McMahon's issues with many of his women wrestlers?
RPenta 2 years ago
ummm, no I have no idea. but I do know what makes me laugh. maybe you should be more passionate about things that directly affect your life, not what a dead wrestler you've never met said about a woman wrestler you'll also never meet. ahh the prioreties of a bleeding heart.
billyspurr 2 years ago
1. You have never met me; so you do not know what things I feel passionate about--except here I can tell you: Nakano was a great wrestler and a great champion and a great woman--that is something a man can feel passionate about;
2. You sense of humor sucks;
3. Actually I met Monsoon many years ago at a wrestling show back in NJ;
4. Don't bet against me meeting Bull Nakano;

He was the voice of ECW, and brought excitement to the show. Cole is just decent, thats about it.
