Why would any Soundgarden fans take offense by this cover, including me??? Cash is an ICON, and Chris is probably honored by this. And it's great cover version btw. Love them both.
Weird thing. I heard his version of this song awhile back - didn't like it. Then I heard "a song" on the trailer for Prey 2, and it was this song, now I love it - but as I'm listening to it now, I'm not really thinking about the Prey 2 trailer...
Cool song all the same, maybe I was just closedminded back then when I first heard it.
Y'know, I'd say there's room for both versions in this universe. Each song has a right place and time where it shines.
Cash's version is a badass in a duster and cowboy hat roaming the wastelands while Soundgarden's version is a motorcycle screaming down an empty desert highway.
I think I have adequate room for both on my playlist.
@McJeyd This is Cash covering Soundgarden. A lot of Soundgarden fans take offense, but Chris Cornell is on the record as being honored to be covered by Cash. Used to work with someone who thought Social Distortion wrote "Ring Of Fire." Don't beat yourself up, that's what your fellow commenters are for!
@McJeyd i don't know but Cash was the founding father of rock music,he started in 1955,he wrote rock songs before rock music was ever aired while serving in the Military, walk the line, cry cry cry and many others, now they claim he was the founding Father of Rock n Roll
Soundgarden was my favourite band in high school and probably still holds the greatest nostalgia of any music from my past. In my opinion, they were miles above any of the other grunge bands.
Having said that, Johnny cash completely owned this song. Just like "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, it's now Johnny's song.
To Cash's eternal credit, He covered a great song. And then did it justice in his own style. I dig both versions for what they are, hard rolling music about indomitable will.
why dont we say Soundgarden is brilliant for creating the song Johnny covered and JC himself is brilliant for covering the song and giving it a different but similar edge.
think about it people, obviously Johnny liked Soundgarden enough to play their song.
everybody please stop arguing on who did a better version. these are to different music genres. its like taking john lennon and making him perform in a guitar battle against bucketehad. its gonna be completely different. so stop arguing and put commens in a way that dont start arguments on youtube. so just enjoy the song please and lets all jsut agree both bands are very very good.
Soundgarden is my Life, my decade, my everything, thanks Johnny (bowing down before you) for praising the youth.
To all the haters and pseudo Soundgarden-Fans
The mighty Chris Cornell introduced this song at the 96 tour with this words "I hope I don't fuck this up, this song is dedicated to Johnny Cash." 'nough said.
@tb7la I dare say Cornell changed the way he played it live because of Cash...go listen to the MSN version of Rusty Cage with Cornell...it has the same break. And all in all you comment is very stupid xD
@thehornypuppy you're absolutely right. Johnny's cover of Rusty Cage opened Cornell's eyes about covers and he basicaly changed the way he looks at song covers etc
I've always felt that Chris Cornell was a damn good lyrical poet. Hearing the always powerful and legendary Mr. Cash sing Cornell's words, well, it's heaven. I think that Johnny Cash had a very open mind about music, and thank god for that 'cause as a huge fan of the original Soundgarden version, I can say this is a great cover of it.
@jimitriskax Today it is true to say that Soundgarden rocks harder than Cash; 100 years from now, it will be safe to say, "Soundgarden who?" while visiting monuments dedicated to Johnny Cash.
@abargle not necesarily. The grunge movement was a very significant thing in rock history. Soundgarden will always be credited as one of the chief architects and one of the big 4 of the Grunge movement.
@orrez74 Sorry, views don't mean shit. A video that pops up first in a search engine generally gets more views. Doesn't mean it's better, worse, or anything but FIRST in a search engine.
an indication of the quality of composition is the variety of genres a particular number is covered in, take Nothing Else Matters for example, from mainstream rock through country to classical orchestra.
A lot of people don't know that CASH helped out punk bands get a start in the music industry, helping them meet the right people to financing and producing them. What a guy!
@everybody: I posted this clip because I think Johnny Cash kicks ass. But Cash would be the first to say that, in America, people have a right to dissent and I would agree. As long as the discourse is respectful, there's room for everyone's view. Look at it from their POV: they're probably Soundgarden fans who prefer the original version. I can understand that—I like Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man" better than I do Cash's. So what? God Bless the First Amendment!
This one "smolders" with hate like none other. Yes metal and grunge and all the other good stuff is blatantly angry, hostile and what not, but this is just smoldering hate... I love it.
I love this song but it just seems like Johnny Cash is just having a small bit of trouble with some of his notes here. It's still great though just because it's Johnny Cash. I don't think he's missing the notes, I think the notes are scared of him lol
whoever just said cash wrote this song is mentally retarted. this is by soundgarden, on the album badmotorfinger, written completly by chris cornell..
I respect cash, but personally i like the original better
My darling Johnny Cash... I rem the day when I would see Johnny anytime I wanted ... he floated all over the South in the 70s ... it was no big deal... but then BOOM ... couldn't get near him after John Travolta made that cowboy movie.
This man was the greatest... Johnny Cash use to say that George Jones was he best country ever to come out of Tenn...
I miss you my brother... Twyla in ca... from Arkansas...
Too bad Tom Petty's band couldn't make this show - the guys that they had fill in were REALLY sloppy and weak! Cash handled it like the PRO that he is, and kept it going. If I had been JR, I would have planted a size 13D boot in the drummer and keyboard players backsides!
We need a willing musical genius to convert this to a soul and R&B song. Those gospel like lyrics would do such a version justice. Where is Donny Hathaway when you need him? R.I.P.

@oleander2882 yeah i just learned that today actually. i just assumed because usually you don't see shit songs get covered and then have a better cover than the original usually it's the other way around
@funlivelife It was more or less Rick Rubin damage. Cash covered many artists that Rubin produced. In the liner notes to this album Cash mentions never hearing about these amazing songwriters Rubin introduced him to and says something to the tune of "I love songs about God, trains, prison, murder, misery and love. Rusty Cage must be in there somewhere..." paraphrased, loosely.
@funlivelife It was actually Rick Rubin's idea to cover the song. He liked it, but he didn't think he'd be able to cover it because of the "height" of Chris' melody line
@funlivelife I once heard a story that Johnny and son John Carter went to a Metallica show, and the got backstage after the show. Allegedly Metallica themselves practically quaked in their boots when Cash showed up.
It is originally written by Soundgarden. Johnny just covered the tune. There is a video with Chris Cornell talking about how he liked Johnny's version.
Killer !!! we didn,t know what we had, now it's gone ! God Bless Marty Stuart for getting this going ! Also, check out Marty's show every Sat. nite on RFD-tv on satallite tv. He has a variety of performers-Rock, rock-n-roll, bluegrass, hillbilly, gospel, what a true American legend !
After this cover Chris introduced "Rusty Cage" on the subsequent Soundgarden tour " I hope I don't fuck this up". So good ol' Chris deemed this cover higher than his original.
You can see, if you watch closely, the very early signs of the disease that would evnetually kill him. And yet, even as he was starting to go downhill (as it shows a little in this vid), he shows that he's still got what it takes.
he's got problems to get into the song, problems to hold the aggressive, revolutionary mood of the song... but he succeeds, he gives fever to the listener's bones, he's a legend!
Nice Nice Video. I really loved your video. Youtube can be a great asset for you. If you need any help getting your video exposed, check out this site called tubeviews [dot net] It has really done wonders for me, I have built 3 Channels up with videos at top in position and this is my forth channel i'm going to working on.

THAT is what separates him from "the rest".
calbaptist08 2 years ago 2
he's got problems to get into the song, problems to hold the aggressive, revolutionary mood of the song... but he succeeds, he gives fever to the listener's bones, he's a legend!
