@kylenihilist Skinner was a whole different bag of bones, to be sure. But all Maslow did was identify and categorize that which already existed. He put a handle on the pot, so they say. Many people have reclarified and redefined that which Maslow explained, but their clarification and definitions mirror his, just in different words. I am personally more of a fan of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and I'll bet you would be too (especially views of the education of the self) if you looked him up.
@kylenihilist Maybe, but you can't escape the fact that Maslow was right. In the end self-actualization is a basic human need and it cannot be controlled or muted. It is the reason we use "I" and "me". It goes beyond sentience. As far as having actual knowledge vs the degree, I would argue that the vast majority of people with college degrees did indeed gain actual, working knowledge that allows them to navigate and make a salary every day. The paper is essential from that respect..

After that you need to use mathematics, statistics, computer applications you have to know how to write a macro for a spreadsheet or how to filtrate phenolphthalein in a solution, how to start an IV or how to measure a slope for surveying. Whatever profession you take up to actually put food on the table, especially as you age, it requires education, not simply enlightenment and self-actualization. Or you can wash dishes.
