@srdustin While it's commonly used that way, the prescriptivist grammarians still regard it as incorrect. Technically, English is supposed to default to the male gender, but this has fallen out of favor amongst actual speakers. Which makes "correctness" in this case depend on whether you consider correct grammar to mean "the way grammarians think it should be spoken" or "the way native speakers actually use it".

Falling back on the default for 'he' while not knowing what gender the person is, in my opinion, is some what sexist, if everyone used the default then the word 'Their' would be some what useless i think.

@srdustin The thing is, linguistics were developed in a time where sexism wasn't even a word, much less cared about. Just because it doesn't appeal equally to both sexes, you can't change the rules of something that has been around for thousands of years (I'm talking about language in general, not English) or more specifically for almost two thousand (English) just because we suddenly care about equality. This is my opinion on grammar, and obviously not sexism as a whole.

@srdustin Actually that's typically incorrect, "their" is only grammatically correct when reffering to more than one entity. The correct thing to do when the gender is unknown is to use "his or her," or "one's."
